Should you have good grades to play sports?
According to, University of Rochester, playing sports helps grow your brain and makes your problem solving skills stronger. Many schools are saying that if you don’t have at least a C average, that whatever sport you are participating in, you will have to quit. Students should not have to quit their sport is they have a average less then a C.
Sports help build relationships
You will make more friends because, you are repeatedly seeing them at practice and at games. You may also build strong relationships with your coach because he is always talking to you giving you directions. They can help you feel less shy because you are keeping busy so you don’t think about being shy. If you have just moved into town and your child has to go to a different school, he may be shy. If you put your child in a sport, they will make new friends and he or she will be a lot more confident. Sports make kids feel like they are a part of something and so

Out of these students, the records of 1,500 student athletes and 4,553 records of students not on sports teams were reviewed. The research shows evidence against my claim. The average GPA of student athletes was 2.67, while the average GPA of non-participating students was a 2.12.” Some students were surveyed and the the study had showed that people who participate in sports receive better grades. Another reason playing sports helps with school is that when you are running or working hard, more blood flows to your brain and and therefore you will be able to concentrate and work harder in school. A collage student that gets very hard homework sometimes gets really stressed out and may sometimes get bad grades. He says “playing sports taught me how to deal with failure and disappointment in life. I learned that I am not always going to get the results that I want, but no matter what, I have to persevere and not give up”(University of
Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
A benefit to playing a sport, like softball, is that one can learn to balance their grades and a sport. While playing a sport, it will get difficult to set aside time to do homework and work on projects. However, when one is involved in a school sport they have to maintain good grades to play on the team. This allows players to work their hardest in school and do their best in everything they do. In addition, “Sports require many aspects such as memorization, learning and repetition. These characteristics are used both on the field, and in the classroom. When playing a sport, a team works towards a goal; this is the same attribute as striving to get a good grade on a test” (“Benefits of Sports”). In summary, a huge benefit of playing a high school, or college level sport is that students learn how to manage their time with having good grades and also being successful on the
Apparently, most student-athletes don't ignore academic preparation even if they believe they will make the pros. The Harris survey was the first conclusive evidence that concerned athletes and school administrators have finally reached these young people after a decade of messages begging them to balance academic and athletic goals”(Lapchick). This piece of evidence supports that youths should have the opportunity to compete in contact sports because it explains how student-athletes today balance out sports and their academics. Participating in sports and balancing academics is hard but, studies show that student-athletes academics scores are higher.
“Maintaining good academic standing is part of the student athlete culture,” according to women’s head soccer coach Jack Hyde, “It’s part of their responsibility...they embrace it,” he said (Stricklen). “I love football and I wouldn’t want to mess it up by not getting good grades in all my classes,” said Narayan, a student athlete (Given and Tribou). However, more and more student athletes are not finding studying and keeping their grades up a priority. Most student athletes dream of one day becoming a professional athlete, but without good grades, they won’t be able to go to a good college to play for. Being an athlete with good grades also benefits them when trying to get scholarships. Becoming a professional
n Addition to this with sports in high school student athletes need to keep up their grades in order to play the sport. Some people may say that when you participate in a sport, it takes away from your studying time and then makes you not as academically inclined as others. I believe that that statement is further from the truth in a recent article written by Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt “High-School Sports Aren 't Killing Academics” from The Atlantic Bowen and Hitt state that “We would expect to see a negative relationship between the commitment to athletics and academic achievement. However, the University of Arkansas’s Daniel H. Bowen and Jay P. Greene actually find the opposite. They examine this relationship by analyzing schools’ sports winning percentages as well as
Each year, the requirements that immigrants need to have access to the country have become more difficult with each new year. Apart from the legal requirements necessary to enter the U.S., this process can be affected by the race and origin of an immigrant. The authors of “The Border: A Double Sonnet” and “The New Colossus” share their perspective on immigration through their poems. Each author’s perspective has been influenced by their time, the privilege and restrictions they faced due to their race, and regulations due to the impact of their poetry about immigration in the U.S. Beginning with a long time between the events that happen in the poem “The Border: A Double Sonnet” written by Alberto Rios and the poem “The New Colossus” written
How would you feel if you didn’t make a sports team and you had good grades and was good at the sport but others got on because they were supposedly better? You would probably feel a little annoyed. Anyway lots of high schools have a certain GPA that students have to get to be on a sports team. Lots of high schools have to have a 2.0 GPA to make it on a sports team. But did you know some schools have eliminated the GPA requirement to get on a sports team. I feel that you should have good grades to be on a sports team because you shouldn’t get on a sports team just because you are good you should also have good grades, getting on a sports team should be earned, and you are a role model for your school when you are on a sports team.
Do you have a child that does sports or is an athlete? Then you want to read this paper to figure out if they should or should not get good grades. Do you want your child to fail high school or college? I think student athletes should get good grades because, getting good grades can help with collage like; paying for college and help the student athletes getting scouted.
School sports can have both positive and negative effects on academic performance. The “How Does Playing a Sport Affect Your Grades?” written by Crystal Lopez, discusses the benefits of sports such as improving focus, attendance, and motivation. “The Negative Side of a Student-Athlete” written by Mickey Strauss from BYU claims the opposite. He states that athletics have a negative impact on academics because student athletes may base their success and happiness on athletic performance. He claims that sports performance acts as another stressor added to the stress of academic performance.
One final reason why you should need to get passing grades to be allowed to play school sports is because if student-athletes have good grades, it will better improve their character on the field and in general. Having good grades and being able to make a commitment to a sport can teach the student athlete to multi-task. In the article “Student-athletes earn diplomas at record rate”, it states, “More student-athletes than ever are earning degrees at Division I schools. The most recent Graduation Success Rate data, collected for student-athletes who entered college in 2007, show 84 percent graduate within six years.” These student-athletes that can handle both the commitment of a college sport and good grades in the classroom help them in life.
This evidence supports my claim because it shows that playing a sport comes with many obligations. It can also teach you respect. To sum it up, sports can teach children responsibility and many life lessons. The third reason athletes should be passing their classes to play sports is because it works out their brain and their future. According to Merlin Rajan, “Students should have good grades to play sports” She states, “Having good grades gives many financial benefits to students.
Sports inspire and teach valuable lessons. Not being able to play often on high school teams teach students to have friendship, perseverance, and teamwork(Larson). Playing a sport teaches good studying habits, discipline and persistence. Students that learn outside the classroom tend to perform higher in the classroom and increases enthusiasm for school. It appears that a majority of students believe that their involvement in sports teams do not affect their overall academics.
A 2013 British study proved that students involved in sports typically got better grades than those who didn’t. These students achieve high grades because they are keeping their brains and bodies active. They form athletes into the healthy individuals they want to be throughout their lives. Additionally, sports teach lifelong goals and skills and that is extremely valuable. The social part of athletics provides the scholars with companions they may not necessarily have without sports.
Vince Lombardi, one of the most successful football coaches of all time, said, “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of will.” Although Lombardi was primarily speaking about success on the turf, he was also speaking about success in life. Aside from being a phenomenal leader on the field, Lombardi was a leader in all aspects of life and stands as a role model for many young student athletes. When student athletes apply this extraordinary will to their academics alongside athletics, the stellar character of these young adults is revealed. Unfortunately for these athletes, many people, especially educators, blame athletics for struggles within the classroom. A common controversy amongst parents, educators, coaches, and athletes is if education is severely affected by athletic participation. When the results of classroom performance aren’t proficient or greater, it is easy to blame sports because of their time consuming nature. This topic carries a lot of weight for kids ranging from middle school to graduate students because, for many, involvement in athletics is a crucial part of developing important life skills that cannot be attained through a classroom setting, and may be the student’s only method of social outreach. Sports serve as a sanctuary, an escape, a passion, and so much more to each individual involved. Athletics have the potential to negatively impact education, if you allow them to yet research shows just as many cases of sports having positive affects on education as cases of sports being detrimental towards education. The truth of the matter is that your education is your responsibility, and sports cannot be blamed for a lack of succes...
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
