" As Americans, we have certain unalienable rights. Some of these rights include our freedom. We have the freedom to do and say as we please if we do not break the law. So some people think that the government should not be able to see what exactly we are doing on the internet while some think the internet should be monitored heavily by the government. Which is the best solution for the safety of our citizens? The governments job is to protect and ensure safety for the citizens of the united states. The government is doing every thing they can to ensure our safety. We may not think the internet is a dangerous place but it is. Things that go on on the internet can really damage us as people or/and as a united nation. By the government censoring the internet they could possibly stop a terrorist attack by seeing what a certain person has been looking up and finding out that their up to no good. Or quite possibly they could figure out if someone was targeting another person and help save that persons life. They could also track someone down who has been missing by using the internet. …show more content…
If they think a serious crime is about to take place or someone has them questioning the safety of the state then yes they should be able to monitor people on the internet, They state's main priority is to protect their people and that is all they are trying to do. The local's should not be able to see everything someone has been doing on the internet unless it is a very serious matter where someone is in grave danger. If it is that serious then the state or the government will step in. I feel like the local will get too carried away and start getting in every single person's business and no one will have any form of
This is a lot to ask, and many people are concerned about "Big Brother" controlling our communications, and they argue that the Internet should be free to regulate itself. However, there must be regulation on the Internet. The Internet allows the freest mode of expression in human history. Anyone is a publisher. With this great freedom, comes great responsibility. The framers of the Constitution never imagined the Internet, but they did imagine principles which should continue to guide us into the electronic frontier. Principles of the Commerce Clause and the First Amendment must continue to apply in the realm of cyberspace.
The rights put forth by the first amendment protect the Internet. The first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” (Wallace). In layman’s terms, this means that the government does not have the right to take away freedoms that involve speech or the press of the American people. The Internet’s lack of censorship encompasses Americans’ freedom because of the first amendment.
Through all the components of the Internet it becomes easy to transfer material that particular governments might find objectionable. However, all of these means of communicating on the Internet make up a large and vast system. For inspectors to monitor every e-mail, every article in every Newsgroup, every Webpage, every IRC channel, every Gopher site and every FTP site would be near impossible. Besides taking an extraordinary amount of money and time, attempts to censor the Internet violate freedom of speech rights that are included in democratic constitutions and international laws.11 It would be a breach of the First Amendment. The Constitution of the United States of America declares that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redr ess of grievances 12 Therefore it would be unconstitutional for any sort of censorship to occur on the Internet and affiliated services.
The internet can be a very disturbing thing for many people. There are a lot of things on the internet that kids should not be able to view. But for some reasons kids are able to view these things. I believe that the government should step in and help with the censorship of the internet. People are but should not be able to view anything on the internet if they are under the recommended viewing age.
Imagine living in a country where people know that their online activity and searches are unmonitored, therefore, nothing can be traced back to them. Every post or message will go unnoticed regardless of the threat it may pose. The National Security Agency (NSA) has become a controversial subject after being linked to performing online surveillance on Americans. While many may feel like their privacy is being violated, very few stop to consider the other side of the coin. To begin with, the NSA has a responsibility to protect the United States with every tool at its disposal. Just as the road traffic is monitored for public safety, online monitoring is essential to the
The FBI should monitor what were doing. This is a point that needs emphasizing since so many people believe it’s all about their privacy. When people found out the u.s government surveillance program, granted the NSA access to data held on private citizens, they didn’t like the idea of it. I get that people would disagree with this because it is a violation of civil rights. On the other hand, by security taking this justifiable measure it will ensure the safety, therefore; the FBI should be monitoring online content when it comes to our well being.
Most of the Internet regulation is imposed by the Government in an effort to protect the best interest of the general public and is concerned with some form of censorship.
Privacy has been a problem throughout the American history. It is natural for people to want their own privacy without anyone or anything to see what they look up on the internet. The people of the United States thought that at one point in their life they had privacy and that the government wasn’t looking through their phone calls or internet history. Yet, in 2013 a man came out and told the people of America that the government has every call, internet history and more. This made the people freak out and hate the government. But the government should be allowed to regulate, monitor, and censor the internet for the safety and care of the citizens of the United States even though the people have the right to privacy.
" “The government should be able to regulate the internet. The internet is a dangerous place, full of porn, identity thefts, and cyber-bullying. If the government were to regulate the internet, they would be able to close down many sites full of porn and ensure that people's identities are safe from hackers.†(Debate.org) When our founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, they had no preconception of the internet and the vast amount of people that can be reached with the push of a button. The Bill of Rights need to be updated to this century whereas some things are still relevant, others need to be revised or deleted. There is no language in the Constitution to rule the internet.
The Internet provides a gateway for an individual to speak freely and anonymously without being targeted to what he or she said. With this said, one of the biggest issues concerning the Internet today is freedom of speech. The issue of free speech on the Internet has been a topic of discussion around the world within the past years. It is a unique communication medium and is powerful than the traditional media[2]. Because the Internet can not be compared equally to other mediums of communication, it deserves the utmost freedom of speech protection from the government. The restriction of speech on the Internet takes away from individual's rights and freedom from experiencing the Internet's benefits and uses. Information found on the Internet is endless and boundless and this poses the question, "should the government be allowed to regulate the information and content being transmitted or posted online?"

I do not believe that the government should be able to monitor our Internet or social media content because what people do in their free time should be up to them and not the government. When a person creates a social media page, they should be given the freedom to do and say what they would like, as stated in the First Amendment. This could also be seen as an unnecessary violation of privacy, as stated in the Fourth Amendment which says that people have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects as well as safe from unnecessary searches or seizures. Putting regulations on what people can or cannot find on the Internet creates a gray area of deciding what should or should not be censored in our everyday lives. If someone can make an
Should the government be able to censor online information? If so, when would this be appropriate? Why or why not? As a free speech fundamentalist, I strongly oppose government censoring online information.
E“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”. A famous quote by none other than Benjamin Franklin, and although he did not live to see it, his words would be part of almost every argument considering internet surveillance. This ongoing debate is so big because so many different people from all aspects of society use the internet, so everyone is affected by the outcome of the debate. There is no easy solution when it comes to the balance between security and freedom, but in the end the right thing to do is to allow people to not be monitored when surfing the internet as it is a violation of the 1st amendment and also very expensive and impractical.
The topic I'm going to be talking about is to what extent does the government, state, and local have the duty to monitor internet content. This is a hard topic because as many people say they have the right to their privacy there are also a lot of reasons to monitor the internet. I think that too many bad and illegal things happen over the internet to not have it be monitored, but, I do also think we deserve the right to our privacy. I think there was a time where it wouldn't of had to be monitored but now days there is too much inappropriate and illegal content online If there is reason to believe that you are doing something illegal or dangerous over the internet your school, the state or local police should have the ability to access it so the problem can be addressed.
