Look around and observe how much technology is in the surrounding area. Chances are there is at least a couple of electronics. Welcome to the age of technology. Technology is used on a daily basis. Students spend hours using technology for school. More than likely they spend hours using technology for purposes other than school. They are constantly using technology yet many schools are not allowing them to use technology in the classroom. The question of whether or not technology should be allowed in the classroom has been debated on ever since technology has become more mobile. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Allowing technology in the classroom can eliminate hefty textbooks, make note taking easier, and make students take responsibility …show more content…
They are a necessity for students to learn but there is an alternative that is just as effective. E-books are the best substitute for textbooks. They contain the same information as the texts books but they are available electronically. Allowing students to have access to a laptop, tablet, etc. in the classroom makes it possible for e-books to be used. Lori Williamson is a librarian at the Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library. She estimates that textbooks for 12 credit hours could cost a student about 780 dollars (Astrain). It is not secret that students pay hundreds even thousands of dollars a semester for textbooks they may never open. E-books cost less and some are free. Gino Tozzi is a political science lecturer at Victoria College/University of Houston. His students used to pay between 99 and 112 dollars for his textbooks. He started offering them free as e-books in 2014 (Astrain). Not only are they more affordable but they are less tolling on the students back. Textbooks can be insanely heavy. My parents weighed my backpack in fifth grade and it was over fifty pounds. Having e-books require students to carry electronic devices that weigh less than ten pounds. Removing the extra weight can help reduce back pain and prevent problems in the future. Kyle Schlesinger, an employee at Victoria College/University of Houston was quoted saying, "They are lighter and good for an avid reader with a bad back. They are …show more content…
We all have to learn to take responsibility for our actions and face the consequences. Technology in the classroom encourages students to make decisions for themselves. A report from 2004 showed that young people had spent an extra hour a day on technology. The amount has risen from five years prior to the report (Joyce Howard). The numbers have only gotten higher since then. Common Sense Media conducted a study that discovered children ages 10 to 12 are spending around six hours on technology for entertainment purposes (Matthew and TODAY USA). This is how they choose to spend their time. No one is making them use technology they chose to. Having a laptop in front of them might be tempting to avoid doing their classwork. They will either choose to browse the web instead of doing their schoolwork or they will finish their school work and use the electronic device after school, the decision is up to them. Getting caught using a laptop or tablet for non-school related activities might get the student a detention. They made the choice and now they must suffer the consequences. A detention, warning, or call home to their parents is usually reserved for the kids in grade school. Typically high school and college students get a punishment far worse than a teacher informing their parents of their disobedience. Another study from Common Sense Media discovered teenagers from 13 to 18 choose to spend almost nine hours
Even I have paid around $280 for one single book, and we never used the book in class.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.
J.R.R Tolkien is an internationally famous fantasy writer, best known for authoring the books, ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Tolkien became widely known and successful due to these books. Throughout this paper, topics on J.R.R Tolkien will be thoroughly discussed.(Source #4) First, J.R.R. "As Costs of Textbooks Rise, E-books Emerge as More Affordable Alternative." The Daily Illini. Brittany Gibson, n.d. Web. 22 Apr. 2014.
Some textbooks used in classes were printed far before the time of their use, and because of this, they do not have updated facts, causing students to learn the wrong information. Furthermore, there are more opportunities online nowadays for learning resources, so there are many more uses for technology in the classroom. Several teachers use websites such as Edmodo and teach lessons on SmartBoards, so students need to bring their own devices to be able to follow along and expand their knowledge beyond the
Expensive Textbooks Textbooks are a must at almost every university. On top of tuition, dining and housing fees, the high cost of textbooks is a huge burden on the students. Every student wants to buy the textbooks for their class as the books are the best source for their study, but the main barrier is the high price of the books. According to NBC's review of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, textbook prices have risen over three times the rate of inflation from January 1977 to June 2015, a 1,041 percent increase (Popken). Further, research has shown that a student spends around twelve hundred dollars a year on textbooks (Senack6).
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.
In school, kids are taught how to use them at the age of five and up until they graduate college and begin using computers for their jobs. Countless schools also have access to iPads for kids in all grades. These schools could be doing this because iPads are the only thing that can hold kids attention. Furthermore, you see more and more teachers putting assignments and test online instead of on paper. This is because kids check and focus more on technology than they do when it is not being used.
First of all, buying an e-book is cheaper than a printed book. As a student who is studying in college, I know students have to buy text books for all the classes. According to an article from website, “average price of best-selling e-books is $5-$11, and most text-books’ price is around $200 which are selling in bookstore even rental books should cost 50% of the new books’ price.” We can immediately know that e-books are much cheaper than printed
According to NBC News in September of 2014, since 2006 the price of college textbooks has risen a whole 73 %. As a college student, I am not surprised with this statistic at all. Textbooks can cost between 200 to 400 dollars. With multiple classes, my textbook
TRANSITION There are many reasons why college textbooks are expensive and here are a few of them.
When they get home from school, the first thing that they do is get on a tablet or some other form of electronic. Being on electronics for so many hours at a time can create social issues for children and it’s also unhealthy for kids to be on electronics for a long time. Also, technology being used in class could also become a distraction and lead kids to wander on to sites they shouldn’t be on. If kids are closely monitored, then there wouldn’t be an issue with
Andy Carvin states “ internet access in schools isn’t worth a hill of beans if teachers aren’t prepared to take full advantage of technology” (2000). Schools spend a lot of money on computer hardware and software as well as other technologies without realizing that many of their employees are unprepared to include them in their teaching and use them to their advantages. Educators often use technology as a classroom management tool rather than an educational one, allowing computer time as a reward for good behavior (Clark & Gorski, 2001). The problem with this is that students learn to use the computer for games and such because it is their reward instead of using it on their own time for educational purposes. This is teaching them the wrong idea. Margaret Honey, director of the Center for Children and Technology in NYC said it best, “The bottom line is, you don’t just put technology into schools or into homes and expect miracles to happen. The technology is only as good as the program that surrounds it” (Meyer, 2002, p.2).
Many kids have computers at home. Majority of them come home from school and just sit at the computer. Not because they have to study something, but because they are bored and they need some sort of entertainment. Children have shown to studies that they have a higher impact on getting obese or develop some sort of dieses. This is caused by the amount of computer usage within a year. Computers also have an effect on your typing. Bad grammar is sometimes also caused by writing in slang on computers. This can result to poor results in school or even a life time habit. There are many ways to prevent this, is giving them a time limit usage on the computer. Promote fun physical activity so kids are not always on the computer. Many kids are not aware of the long term affects of over usage of technology, so they should be taught. Many times when parents tell kids the disadvantages of technology they often listen to what they have to say.
Technologies like computers or iPads (or anything with internet access for that matter) in the classroom could possibly distract students from their work. Classroom administrators seem to forget that the majority of students really don’t want to be in the classroom.. I remember when I was in highschool, whenever a teacher would bring students into a computer lab, or bring class sets of computers, or bring iPads into the classroom for a lesson a large portion would go onto twitter, or onto any unblocked flash game website whenever the teacher was not looking, try to access anything for them to “escape” the classroom. When there are a large majority of children and/or teens that do not want to go to school, and are given tools to be rebellious so easily, what is going to stop them? Aside, who really wants to sit through the same autonomous paper typing over and over again...
