The Smoking Gun Smoking in colleges has become a very controversial topic. Because smoking has proven to be bad for you and your health and it becoming more and more socially incorrect, many colleges have started to ban smoking on campus, however smoking is not illegal. In fact as of October 2014 there are over 1,477 college campuses that are completely smoke free (“Smokefree and Tobacco-Free U.S. and Tribal Colleges and Universities”). This begs the question of should smoking be banned not only in public places in colleges but private as well? I believe that smoking should be banned on college campuses because it affects the health of non-smokers as well as smokers,

“Approximately 20 percent of students begin smoking in college and another 50 percent intensify their smoking behavior” (“Smoking on College & University Campuses”). This shows greatly people are influenced at this time and the dangers of having a college campus where it is acceptable to smoke. If smokers don’t have an easily accessible place to smoke then they will be a lot less likely smoke especially since one of the most common types of smoking in college is social smoking. Social smoking is often thought of as not dangerous since it usually involves the smoker only smoking a few cigarettes in a day then they might not do it for a couple days or even weeks after. The dangers of this is people often aren’t aware of how easily they can become addicted and that they can actually become addicted within seconds of taking just one puff of a cigarette (“Social Smoking”). These smoking bans could turn out to be not just beneficial for students but for teachers as well, actually helping “to nudge more campus workers to snuff out the habit” (Stansbury). Along with the reduction of the pollution of the student’s bodies from smoking it will also help reduce the pollution on college
Improving smoking boxes on campus can improve overall environment on campus. Every day in our daily campus lives, we can easily see people smoking outdoors. Smokers would just go anywhere they want to smoke even when it says it is forbidden to smoke or there are no trash cans. Smokers argue that it is their rights to smoke wherever they want but for non-smokers smoking outdoors can be a source of stress. Not few non-smokers hate the smell of smoke. Some even complain that cigarette smoke give them headache. Our university built two smoking boxes on campus for smokers but they do not use them, arguing that they smell bad and that they are not well maintained. If we were to improve the current status of smoking
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
In the recent years, an increased number of colleges and universities have been instituting campus-wide smoking bans, prohibiting smoking anywhere on college grounds. The goal of the campus smoking ban is to discourage smoking by young people, improve the health of the students and staff, who are otherwise forced to inhale toxic smoke, and provide an overall cleaner environment. In addition to the obvious health and environmental benefits, the much-needed smoking ban can financially benefit the institutions themselves!
Cigarettes are one of the most common killers known to mankind. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year, and that number isn’t going to go down in less we do something about it. Smoking in the twentieth century killed only 100 million people, whereas a billion could die in our century. There are several more reasons why we should ban cigarettes, and I am going list them.
Many people say that smoking is so bad for you and the people around you. There are many advertisements on the television that also support this. It has been a huge issue in the United States, especially because there has never been an “up” side of smoking. When talking about smoking you only talk about the bad things that come from it. There are no positives for smoking and especially not for the people around you. The smell that lingers in the clothing and hair doesn’t do favors for the smokers or anyone else around them. In an article by Lee Weal titled, “How Long Does Cigarette Smoke Smell Stay in A Room?”, “Cigarette smoke takes forty-five minutes to get off your clothes if you smoke one, every time you smoke another, add 15 minutes. Keep in mind that the smell of smoke is on your skin and hair, so take a shower after every single cigarette, or you will smell strongly of it for the rest of the day.” (Weal) This smell is exposed to everyone even kids. They can recognize the smell of cigarettes after a couple times a person smokes. Kids are very curious and very oblivious therefore they want to do everything grown-ups do. When young kids are exposed to people smoking, they are curious about it and want to try it themselves. Making almost 12% of teens who were exposed at a young age to start smoking when they get older. Clearly smoking does not only affect the smoker, but the people around them. Nobody wants their children to be around harmful chemicals that can cause serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases especially at a young age. All in all, you must assume that people want smoking banned in order to keep people and young kids
In recent years, smoking has started to take over the lives of many teenagers. The number of teenagers smoking has increased dramatically in the last several years. This is a major problem because smoking can lead to sickness and major diseases that can lead to death. Teens tend to participate in this while out of the presence of an adult figure. Although teens should not be smoking in the first place, an adult figure should be around to help insure that their children are doing the right things, even when they are behind sealed doors with their peers. Teenagers as they mature become a model for younger children and when they set the example of smoking can ruin their respectable image to the children that look up to them.
The advantages of making e-cigarettes and Juuls a medical prescription allows the accessibility to young adults much more challenging. Also by educating parents and teachers what to look for they can restrict the students access to utilizing an e-cig by confiscating it. Correspondingly, by educating students about the dangers of e-cigs in health classes and etc., this can scare them off and decide not to poison their bodies with the harmful chemicals. E-cigs are also known to cause vision impairment and reduces the ability to see at night (Livermore). In relation many young adults smoke in their cars while driving, likewise by technicality considering it to be driving under the influence. By taking away e-cigs, this can reduce life-threatening distractions and teen accident rates. By creating more laws and restrictions on the availability of e-cigs to young adults, this can stop the increasing rates of young smokers and save future
Should cigarette smoking be banned for everyone in the United States? Why do you need to be a member? Why not? Should those who choose to spend their time smoking to relieve stress, personal enjoyment, or simply just because, have to lose their right to what makes them happy? Smoking tobacco products has been around for decades and in many different forms.
Every year tobacco is responsible for over 480,000 deaths. That includes people who have died from secondhand smoke. When statistics like this exist it is hard to understand why tobacco is still legal. This number increases every year that passes and most people believe it isn’t shrinking anytime soon. Tobacco should be banned because it’s deadly to not only the users, it’s highly addictive, and the tobacco industry is corrupting information promoting its harmful product. Society shouldn’t have to deal with anymore premature deaths due to a lethal legal product. We should work towards getting this useless product banned everywhere.
Everyone has an image to maintain and nobody wants to feel stressed in life, especially in college. College is where the real freedom steps into our lives and it is sad to see how these youngsters are spoiling the best times of their life by smoking and then making themselves weak and subjecting the body to some serious health issues including cancer. Yes, we all go to watch movies but nobody pays attention to the advertisement which warns people about the consequences of tobacco and smoking. These tiny little steps of awareness are of no
Secondly, the drop of teenagers addicted to nicotine would be tremendous since they don’t get peer pressured to it in bathrooms of the high school. Thirdly, it would stop the amount of bathroom breaks students will use since they will now not go to vape they will only go to potty. Fourthly, without those bathroom breaks kids are forced to stay and class and learn which will make dropping out less than ever. Fifthly, there will be a happier atmosphere since kids will not feel like they need nicotine. Sixthly, teachers will be less stressed knowing they will not have to randomly find a kid vaping and send him to the
However, by prohibiting smoking in public areas and restricting it only to a certain place prevents smokers from fair participation in their social life. The main goal of the smoking ban is to make it socially unacceptable to smoke, which helps force smokers to quit. Medical studies have been conducted and published that show the dangers of smoking and the effects of second hand smoke. The research is very vague though and never truly shows you the exact causes. People have a choice not to expose themselves to many of the same harmful materials in our everyday life, such as soda, fried foods, and car exhaust.
“Smoking is a public health and fire hazard. Locations where smoking is allowed shall be restricted in order to: (A) prevent infringements upon others and (B) create and maintain an environment that is in the best interests of the safety, health, and well being of all the users of university property ("General Safety Policies", 2017).”
Smoking Should be Banned in All Public Places. Every year thousands of people die because of having cancer or other tobacco related illnesses due to smoking. Smoking is seen everywhere. from our own television screens to even the world wide web; the internet.
But unfortunately I have no choice in most public patios. One says passive smoking but I want rather call it involuntary smoking .
