Many of us have said that there is not enough time in a day for work, activities, and school. What if the school days were extended to incorporate more time for learning? Several schools throughout the nation are debating whether they should have longer school days or if we should keep the current school days the same. The school’s most important goal is to enhance the knowledge of students so that they will know what to do in their future. Therefore, lengthening the school days will give teachers more time to focus on weak areas, more difficult materials, and allow teachers more time to spend with students. As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
One of the most talked about issues of schooling today, would be year round schooling. The program started as a new way to learn. The old way and still the way most schools calendar is set up was designed the way it is due to harvest times, when the United States was a farming country. There have been many studies done, and some schools have already implemented this program. The studies and the schools that have gone ahead and implemented the program have seen both good things and bad things in their findings. There will be both pros and cons for every issue, and some may see pros and cons differently. Year round schooling is the idea of attending school for an entire year, not all 365 days, but continuously throughout the year. Year round schooling operates on a different schedule to incorporate the same amount of classroom time as a typical school schedule has. The only difference is that the breaks are shorter, but there are more of them in year round schooling. This is the basis of most of the arguments for and against year round schooling.
The founders of the American public school system had a dream that all of America’s youth would have the opportunity to attend school in the best way possible for the times. The educational leaders of today must take up the same mission of providing the best school system imaginable for our modern era. Yearlong education is the solution to many problems that plague teachers, students, and school budgets.
Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In my opinion high school should not be extended to five years. I believe that school should not be extended to five years because students would most certainly lose interest in it. High school is also a students own responsibility and if a student fails then that is their own mistake and should not get an extra year just to have an extra chance of getting better grades to get into college. My last reason is that there will be more student dropouts by the fifth year because of the loss in interest
Students should be required to stay in school until age 18. Staying in school longer allows for more time to earn enough credits to graduate. Experts say that having a high school diploma allows for better job opportunities and higher earnings. With a better job, there will be more job satisfaction. If the minimum age requirement for high school is 18 years, then there will be a lower dropout rate, higher average earnings, and higher job satisfaction.
What is your perspective on today’s high school schedule? From a student’s point-of-view I think it is more stressful than it should be. I believe that we should come to school at the same time as usual but we should only have our four main courses, which are mathematics, english, history, and science. This idea would take so much stress and worrying out of all the students’ minds. First off we would be a lot more focused because there are only four classes instead of seven. Another reason would be that we have a lot more time to do our homework or study for our classes because school would be let out earlier. Surely, there are a lot of students who are involved in after school activities and we will be more effective in our sport or activity because we will have more time to practice.
Should school be year round? Well, I say yes because our young people will get done with High School faster. And if school was year round, students will not have a chance to get in a lot of trouble and they will not be able to join a gang or have time to hang on a block because they will not have a long summer break. Somebody needs to bring this problem to the school board to see if they will make the change to save many students’ lives by keeping them off the streets and keeping them in school all year long. If the children were in school longer, they will most likely turn out better, but it’s up to the people of communities to push kids through school. I believe parents need to stand up for their kids’ rights to help them have a better future by helping to make school last all year.
With longer school hour, students perform better, right? At least to Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, it is. In his article “Education is Not a Luxury,” he believes the current American school schedule is the debris of the old agrarian calendar, which does not cope with the modern educational system. At the moment, the school board is having a heated debate on quite the controversial question. “Should school days be extended?” Some vote in favor of it while others do not. Both sides shouting neck and neck at each other, neither coming to a decision any time soon. Given the fact that students already have extracurricular activities outside of school, stressful lives as it already is, and how much this will additionally cost, school days should not be extended.
It is already hard enough for some people to focus during the day, extending the day would just make it even harder for them. Also, the classes would be longer, making students lose interest lot quicker.,The quality of the work and lessons are going to poor, due the duration of the class. Not only is it more work for the students at school, but it is also more work for them at home. Being that the school day is longer they have less time at home to do projects and homework, their projects and homework assignments are not going to do themselves. The less time they have the longer they are going to stay up at night to try finish their assignments, causing the to lose sleep. The loss of sleep leads to tiredness at school and sleeping during their classes, causing their grades to drop. Their grades dropping will cause a lot of stress on the student as well as their teacher. The student is going to be stressed about if they advance to the next grade or not while the teacher will be stressed about what she is doing wrong for her students to be failing. Has anyone ever asked they're children what their needs are? People are talking about making school longer my opinions is. NO! Because if kids are sitting in a place for a while they get bored, Most kids already feel overwhelmed with the regular school schedule and most kids have activities going on after school that the school does not provide like a job. The reason why I think we should have shorter school days is that you get more free time when you are out of school.
