Many of us have said that there is not enough time in a day for work, activities, and school. What if the school days were extended to incorporate more time for learning? Several schools throughout the nation are debating whether they should have longer school days or if we should keep the current school days the same. The school’s most important goal is to enhance the knowledge of students so that they will know what to do in their future. Therefore, lengthening the school days will give teachers more time to focus on weak areas, more difficult materials, and allow teachers more time to spend with students. One of the most talked about issues of schooling today, would be year round schooling. The program started as a new way to learn. The old way and still the way most schools calendar is set up was designed the way it is due to harvest times, when the United States was a farming country. There have been many studies done, and some schools have already implemented this program. The studies and the schools that have gone ahead and implemented the program have seen both good things and bad things in their findings. There will be both pros and cons for every issue, and some may see pros and cons differently. Year round schooling is the idea of attending school for an entire year, not all 365 days, but continuously throughout the year. Year round schooling operates on a different schedule to incorporate the same amount of classroom time as a typical school schedule has. The only difference is that the breaks are shorter, but there are more of them in year round schooling. This is the basis of most of the arguments for and against year round schooling.
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
The founders of the American public school system had a dream that all of America’s youth would have the opportunity to attend school in the best way possible for the times. The educational leaders of today must take up the same mission of providing the best school system imaginable for our modern era. Yearlong education is the solution to many problems that plague teachers, students, and school budgets.
Students now have the opportunity to work another day to save for their future. The four-day school week also provides much more time for these children to spend and enjoy time with friends, and family, as well as enjoying extracurricular activities. There is a lovely environment for the children at the school and an extra day for the instructors to gain knowledge and a better understanding of their curriculum. Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In my opinion high school should not be extended to five years. I believe that school should not be extended to five years because students would most certainly lose interest in it. High school is also a students own responsibility and if a student fails then that is their own mistake and should not get an extra year just to have an extra chance of getting better grades to get into college. My last reason is that there will be more student dropouts by the fifth year because of the loss in interest
Some school districts offer programs that allow high school students to graduate in three years instead of the traditional four years. Most students who follow this plan must take courses during the summers or in the evenings or may not be able to take elective courses. In my opinion I think it is okay for students to finish high school in three years and enter college or the workforce one year early.
What is your perspective on today’s high school schedule? From a student’s point-of-view I think it is more stressful than it should be. I believe that we should come to school at the same time as usual but we should only have our four main courses, which are mathematics, english, history, and science. This idea would take so much stress and worrying out of all the students’ minds. First off we would be a lot more focused because there are only four classes instead of seven. Another reason would be that we have a lot more time to do our homework or study for our classes because school would be let out earlier. Surely, there are a lot of students who are involved in after school activities and we will be more effective in our sport or activity because we will have more time to practice.
