As time passes, shooting rampages have appeared on newspaper headlines more frequently. The reason these shootings are becoming so common is that people are allowed to buy assault rifles. Causing so much terror and destruction, the world would be safer without them. Nobody should be allowed to purchase assault rifles because they are used to create violence, harm others, and can even be used by children accidentally.
Assault rifles are not items that should be bought so easily. They are dangerous and will end up causing more harm than good. No one should be allowed to buy assault rifles because if they end up falling into the wrong hands, a lot of damage can occur. For example, in the Orlando shooting that occurred on Sunday, June 12, 2016, the gunman who was identified as Omar Mateen, used an assault rifle to go on his shooting rampage. Due to the fact that these weapons are easy to buy, Mateen was able to kill at least forty-nine people. Mateen is not the only one who was able to purchase items like

Not everyone who owns an assault rifle keeps it locked up in a safe place. There are about 1.7 million children who live in a home with a weapon that is not only unlocked but loaded as well. These weapons are left around young kids who are unaware of how dangerous they are. Since it is known that young kids are curious with the items in their surroundings, they will most likely end up going near that loaded weapon. Due to the fact that assault rifles are able to be bought, the death rate of kids has increased. Studies in the United States show that from 2012 to 2014, about 1,297 children died as a result of a gun-related injury caused either by themselves or another child. Because the weapons are purchased and are left around kids, they do not realize that they not only can hurt other people around them but themselves as
Frank Streir in his article “Do We Love Our Guns More Than Our Kids?” highlights how society’s children are being exposed to the used of guns and is involved in what is known as child gun violence. The article is presented from the standpoint of the United States of America society trends and happenings. Much statistics were evident in his research and findings on the issue. This issue is not present only in the U.S but is widespread in many nations across the globe and proves put our children at risk.
Over the last decade or so, the United States of America has been shaken by an epidemic of terrifying mass shootings, devastating slayings of unexpecting victims, and unnerving annihilations of the innocent. There is no specific target, no explicitly sought-out group, nor definite individual. From a classroom of first-graders, to a crowded movie theatre, to a U.S. Naval yard, the location seems at most, random, other than that it is almost always a public place. The perpetrators responsible for these horrific murders also vary, and often surprise those who thought they knew them. However, while the occurrences of mass shootings are unpredictable and always shocking, most have one thing in common: the use, or rather misuse, of assault weapons-automatic or semiautomatic military style rifles. To ensure the safety, security, and well-being of the people of the United States, the government should ban assault weapons.
There are a lot of people who believe that these weapons should be ban. They say that these weapons are too dangerous and that they shouldn’t be available to the public to buy. They are very dangerous, but to purchase these guns you must have a background check, a license to carry them, and you have to have a gun safety license also. The level of security you have to go through to purchase these weapons is insane, and so is the price of these weapons.
First off, “In 1984, the assailant who massacred 21 at a McDonald's in San Ysidro, California, unleashed more than 200 rounds. School and workplace shootings in Stockton, California, and San Francisco in the late '80s and early '90s also involved large magazines, with an estimated 100 shots fired in each case. In 1997, a gunman in Orange, California, fired nearly 150 shots, wielding an AK-47 with a 30-round magazine three years after a federal law banned such assault weapons.” ("A Killing Machine"). This means that after assault rifles were banned, they and high-capacity magazines are being used in mass shootings which is increasing the death and injury rate. The death rate rose because the rifles are rapid-fire weapons that shoot faster with a larger magazine. Also, “Seven states have some restrictions on high-capacity magazines; a new state law passed in New York limits magazines to no more than seven rounds.” ("A Killing Machine"). For this reason some states have banned high-capacity and one has a limitation on bullets. High-capacity magazines are banned unless you have owned one before January 1st, 2000. Mass shootings that have involved high-capacity magazines have made the death rate and injury rate
Some of the deaths that were caused by gun violence was dealt to small children.Having a firearm in your home can cause a great risk if you have a child in your home because a firearm can be accessed by a child. In many situation the child is playing with firearm without adult supervision and end up either wounding themselves or end up dead. According to CNN “Guns kill Nearly 1,300 US children each year.”Also when a firearm is easily accessible a child will often grab a hold of it and it could be a possibility that they can take it to school there were some cases where a kid took a firearm to school and opened
Violence related to guns is a prominent issue in America. Guns are a means to an end; meaning guns have played a strong role in suicides, murders, and injuries. In the past decade there has been an average of 400-500 thousand incidents of firearms per year (Gun Violence). The number of injured people from firearm incidents in the United States per year for the past decade is 400-600 thousand people (Gun Violence). These statistics are absolutely shocking to anyone. The amount of violence and crime that comes from guns is enormous. It is imperative that proper gun control is put into place by means of background checks and proper training. It can almost be certain that the number of incidents of accidental discharges from children and the number of victims affected by gun crimes in general can be highly reduced.
The controversy over assault rifles is one of the most problematic issues related to the contributions of gangs, drug traffickers, and most criminal activity. More often than not, criminals have access to the weapons of their choice more easily than it should be. Getting them from licensed dealers, black markets, and family members’ homes, the availability of these militia weapons has become to effortless to obtain. The rise of criminal activity is part of the reason more than one-third of high school students have easy access to a weapon or gun. “Four out of five guns brought to school are actually brought from their own homes” (Page par 2). This is one of the biggest problems when faced with where criminals get their guns. They either steal them from relative’s homes, ask to borrow them, or steal them from licensed sellers. There are a lot of ways people can get guns. People who should not be able to purchase a firearm are allowed to, and illegal transactions are also a huge issue with criminals getting their guns. For all these reasons that is why Government should require restricted gun ownership to protect society, prevent crime, and allow for recreational use.
Gun violence, have the tendency for youths to experience hardships of violence by other youths. Continuous studied on firearm show the increase of death that’s occurring with children in the U.S., ranging from ages 0-20 needs to be rectify (Children Defense Fund). In 2007, more recent studies by Children’s Defense Fund provided more statistical information on children and young adults of all races, who are subjected to gun violence, has triple since 2007. These finding suggest that vulnerable children are dying from the lack of gun control. Adolescence is a time for continue growth development, which many of the risk factors involving teenage violence is becoming more prevalent with children of all ages. More children and young adults are killed by firearms than from all other death related issues combine (Irwin, Berg & Cart, 2002). In other words, the numbers of violence inflicted upon children are generated by oth...
The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that citizens have a right to bear arms, but since this amendment is not very clear there is some controversy. Many people argue that there shouldn’t be assault weapons because they are too powerful, or that this amendment was not intended to allow high powered assault weapons. There are many reasons on why assault rifles and large magazines should not be banned in the United States, including protection, defense, and past bans have not been effective.
More than 20,000 children and youth under the age of 20 years old are injured or killed by guns in the U.S. The easy accesses kids have to getting their hands on guns are a major reason why firearms are the second leading cause of death among the youth. The majority of deaths by guns in the youth are homicides. About one-third of them are suicides. Seven percent are unintentional. People living in urban areas such as, older teens, males, African American youth, and Hispanic youth are more likely to be involved in gun homicides. People in rural areas like males and Caucasian youth are more likely to commit suicide. There were 2,711 infant, child, and teen firearm deaths. That’s seven deaths a day.
Imagine receiving the news that a loved one or someone you care about has had a tragic or a unfortunate accident as a result of a gun; this can happen to anyone in the reach of a weapon. Misuse of Guns in America is an irresponsibility of people misusing and abusing the authority of a gun. Americans in the U.S buy and obtain guns all the time. Of course, there are background checks done for the people purchasing them, but who knows what that person will do with a weapon this present day, and that does not mean the will be the only one who uses it. The rate of guns being misused by irresponsible people in America is not safe for U.S citizens.
Guns have been the weapon of choice for some of the most brutal massacres on America soil. Since early history guns have been used mainly for militia and defense purposes. But, the development of new gun technology has made firearms more accessible and deadly. Although the second amendment gives the right to bear arms, guns should be controlled and monitored by the government because guns have contributed to a lot of killings in America and will increase crime rates.
That is the irony with having the ability to own a gun. People buy guns to protect themselves and their families and as a result one is most likely to be killed because there is a fire-arm in the house. Apart from that in the article “End the Gun Epidemic in America” posted by the editorial board on The Opinion Pages.com, the board feels that “these are weapons of war, barely modified and deliberately marketed as tools”. When having the right to own a gun, one must not forget that it is weapon that can instantly kill someone. Anyone has the ability to purchase a gun without any question asked, why? One reason might be because store owners infer that the reason for purchasing is for safety precautions and also the store has made profit . Many forget that those are weapons, deadly weapons and yet America does little to no progress in regulating the issue of guns. America needs to do something about the gun epidemic in the US, and there are a handful of ways to
Statistics on the National Safe Kids Campaign Website reveals that “Americans possess nearly 200 million firearms, including 65 million handguns. Approximately one-third of families with children (representing more than 22 million children in 11 million homes) keep at least one gun in the home. Gun owners keep firearms in the home for hunting and recreation (60 percent) or for protection and crime prevention (40 percent)”. Although 40 percent seems to be on the minority, households with guns are at higher risk of homicide, and there are few beneficial effects of gun ownership; as a result, alternative methods for crime prevention and protection should be adopted.
Living in a Chevrolet Astro Van versus living in an Average Apartment in Vancouver While living in Vancouver, British Columbia I have had the pleasure of experiencing the pros and cons of living in a camperized Chevrolet Astro van and also an average one bedroom apartment. There are pros and cons to living in a van versus living in an apartment. The way you choose to live will depend on how you prefer to live your life. Living in a van is not a normal way of living and it is not for everyone.
