Classrooms today are much different than classrooms 50 years ago. Classes today are much more technology oriented than they were in the past. High schools are now loaning students their own personal chromebook to carry till the end of the year. High school students should be required to carry chromebooks. Students should be required to carry chromebooks because it is more efficient in classrooms, it gives students a sense of responsibility, and it gives all students the same resources to be successful.
To start, high school students should be required to carry chromebooks because it is more efficient in classrooms. In the past each student would have to get a chromebook from a chromebook cart which was very congested. Also, at the end of the class the congestion came back when the students had to place the chromebooks back into the cart. If students have them with them at their desk there would be no congestion. To sum up, requiring students to carry their own chromebooks decreases the congestion and wasted time in the classroom.

Students must be responsible and always have their chromebook with them. Not only do the students have to have their chromebook with them, the chromebook has to be charged prior to class. As well, it is a great responsibility to keep the chromebook in pristine condition. Students know that they must not break the chromebook or they will have to pay for the damages. Knowing the consequences of not being responsible, pushes students to be more cautious and responsible. A student was sitting in class and a teacher said Everyone get your chromebooks out. The student opened their chromebook and it wouldn’t turn on. The student raised their hand and said My chromebook is uncharged. The teacher told the student oh well you have to work and watch from another student's chromebook. Having students do this can be a problem because students then can’t work at their own pace and usually don’t work as well because their not hands on and in front of them to focus on. If a student's chromebook isn’t charged or unuseable they should be able to get their charger from their locker and be able to charge their chromebook. When students have their chromebooks right infront, 67% of students say that they are more focused and may have a better education based off of learning of their chromebook. So if students say this and the school rules don’t allow students to use their chargers during school, they may not be able to focus as well
The first reason that the School board should continue the Chromebook program is because it gives the students more responsibility. Chromebooks help students practice responsibility because they have to be charged every night, students have to be careful
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
In the New York Times article “Leave your laptops at the door to my classroom” written by Darren Rosenblum he explains why he prohibits the use of laptops in his college classroom. Rosenblum observed a senior colleague’s class and his class to discover that laptops are blocking the classroom connection between the teacher and student. Rosenblum noticed that laptops reduced a student’s education and it has become a distraction rather than allowing students to critically think and learn challenging and uncomfortable things. He believed there are two skills needed to succeed, listening and communicating, but with students using laptops it killed the connection when it was time to being listening and communicating with care. This is most likely due to their ignorance of the benefits involved with allowing campus carry. Campus carry improves the overall environment of a college and promotes safety. About forty years ago, teachers used to say that the worst problems in their schools were students chewing gum and talking during class. Wouldn't it be wonderful if those were still the biggest problems? Unfortunately, teachers now are struggling with many deaths of their students and maybe even their own children. The numbers of teenagers’ deaths increase everyday from gun violence. Students, particularly boys, who carry guns, are more likely to be involved in drug activity according to The Children Data Bank and more likely to have committed crimes with weapons. Likewise, girls who carried guns were more likely to report feeling threatened. Therefore, stricter law for gun control will lessen the insecurity of a person when holding a gun and prevent further unnecessary death.
Many people argue that by using laptops during lectures, students are able to actively participate in the class and they have better communication with the professors despite large class sizes (Fried, 2008, p.2). Through classroom resources such as university and course online platforms, students are able to access the information they are learning about in their lectures. However, students themselves also have a very particular view on this topic, as they are very protective over their belongings and do not want to have their laptops banned from the classroom: “more and more faculty are banning laptops from their classrooms because of perceptions that they distract students and detract from learning,” (Fried, 2008, p.1). Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
We all know technology is changing everyday. As laptops are becoming more popular in today 's society, especially in a college classroom setting, professors have noticed more and more students with their faces engaged on the computer screen and not the lecture. There have been recent studies that show in classroom use of laptops can affect students and their learning. Should the use of laptops be banned in the classroom?
According to The Wallace Foundation (n.d.), “It goes almost without saying that kids today are absorbed in computers, cell phones, video games, television and other media-spending an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day with the gadgetry.” Also, Richardson (2013) states that “it 's hard not to look at it as great news for kids, who will see growing availability of computers and access as a means to learn deeply and passionately in ways the current system of schooling was never built for.” Talking about math, Sousa (2015) said that “technology use can help students make significant gains in mathematical achievement and conceptual understanding.” (p. 130). Classroom is a new tool in Google Apps for Education that helps teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and easily communicate with their classes. (Google Classroom, n.d.). Students can keep track of what’s due to the Assignments page and begin working with just a click and can create presentations using Google Slides. One of the advantages is that they can work using any technology, including computers, iPad, tablets, and smartphones. Teachers can create surveys, quizzes or any assessment using Google Forms and its add-ons. Another advantage is that students and teachers can work from anyplace with Internet access. Another problem on the productivity side deals with the teachers instead of students: often times, technology gives the educators a way to pay less attention to students and do less teaching. Instead of explaining a lecture, it would be just as simple to send the students links to a YouTube video that covers the main topic. The greatest teaching tool would be a downloadable app instead of the marker on the board. Technology would begin to replace human interaction in the classroom. Even more troubling, a number of students would begin to “act out” in a negative, attention-seeking manner. Technology is simply less personal. An unspoken focus of school is student-teacher interaction. The teachers become trustable authority figures and example setters. Many kids crave emotional connections at school because they are unable to get them at home.
Locally, the high schools have begun to understand this growing need and have issued laptops to all students in the freshman classes. This is just a first step. The teachers must now make good use of these new tools and help the students understand the how, when, where, and why of their gifts. It will be awhile before education can afford to catch up to societies needs, but if we recognize the need now, changes can be made to ensure that our next generation will be prepared for the future. A future were bugs are very different from insects, surfing requires no water and viruses have nothing to do with infection.

When students have no desire to learn and are given tools to distract themselves technology hurts them, or rather their test scores, more than students who learn with book or oral based teaching because the absence of distraction. Computers and iPads are very difficult to repair or replace compared to books, and because most people are not yet “technologically literate” enough to perform basic tasks for the maintenance of their computer, then it would just be easier to use books. These issues create question as to if students are ready for classes to require computer knowledge when some have difficulty learning the material as it has always been learned for thousands of years.
