A big debate in our society is how old one should be to vote. Many people think that children at the age of thirteen years and older should be able to vote. Others agree that children do not really have a voice in this country and should be able to voice their opinion. I seem to disagree, even though I am only fourteen years old. Teenagers under eighteen years old are too young and immature. When they are eighteen, they are more mature and educated. The age of eighteen is a perfect age for voting since most teenagers and now adults and can be independent upon themselves. The Constitution states that, "The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age" (Unknown 26). This was decided as an appropriate age for United States citizens to vote. If children and teenagers were to vote, they would be influenced by their parents. If a parent is Republican, then their children will believe that that party is better and they will vote for that party. Parents may also use their children to get more votes for their party. This would be possible since many teenagers will probably not be interested in voting. …show more content…
If the voting age was lowered, them the youth voting rate would probably be even lower. Most teenagers don't even know much about politics till they take a United States government course which will usually be when they are sixteen or seventeen years old. Sure, there are mature teenagers who vote not because their friend is voting for one particular candidate, but because they care about our country. Many teenagers will abuse voting, though. "One bad apple can spoil the bunch," is a good example for this instance. If teenagers were to leave their homes and get jobs and try to support themselves, just think of how disastrous that would
I. Introduction A. Should 16 year old teenagers be able to drive? B. “Those who favor raising the driving age say that statistics show teenagers are more likely to get into accidents than adults. What they don't say is that statistics also show that men of all ages are 77 percent more likely to kill someone while driving than women.
In the United States 2.2 million citizens are incarcerated on felony charges. Laws in America prohibit felons from voting. As a result, on Election Day 5.3 million citizens of America are disenfranchised because of crimes they once committed. Though they once broke the law, they have served their time and have been punished adequately in accordance with the American Justice System. Felons should regain full voting rights after their stint in prison.
In “You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re a Voter,” author Anya Kamenetz states her belief that the voting age should be lowered to sixteen. Kamenetz gives several premises to her argument.
As of the ratification of the 26th amendment in 1971, the voting age in the US is 18. As I turn 18 this coming summer I now have the chance to participate in elections local, state, and national wide. The history of youth voting has changed over time with that more 18-24 year olds are voting as time goes on. The question comes to mind about voting in that why would someone want to vote and if it’s just a waste of time. I believe that if people have the chance to vote, then they should which is why I am going to vote in elections to come in the future.
Should the legal alcohol drinking age be lowered to eighteen? At the age of eighteen years old, you are eligible to vote, you can legally purchase cigarettes, you are eligible for the military draft, you are willing to die for this country, you are even able to serve on a jury, and you are titled as an adult at the age of eighteen. Why can’t someone at the age of eighteen not drink alcohol? Who is to say that just because someone is twenty-one years of age means that they are wise enough to drink alcohol in an accountable conduct? There are several explanations why one ought to be able to drink alcohol at the age of eighteen.
Although there are 44 million eligible young voters ages 18-29, in 2012 only 45% of them voted. These young people make up one fifth, or 21%, of the eligible voting population, yet they often do not vote. Voting is a tremendous gift! Young people in many other countries around the world have to fight to gain this right. In America, voting is often taken for granted by all age groups, but the youth take it for granted the most.
I know a lot of 13-14 year olds political views and I’ve heard a lot of very “different” and interesting views on who they would vote for if they could vote at that age or in the next election. One way this reason could be countered is saying that 16 year olds are not mature enough to vote, and do not have a reasonable political view. But that is not true, along with the weird and political views I do not believe in, there are some very strong and nice ones that are very convincing and also, do you need to be mature to vote? Hear me out, if you believe in a view of yours, if it’s not “mature” that doesn’t mean that it might not be a valid reason to vote for that person, but it is their opinion and they are entitled to that one. And the National Youth Right Association also said that; If we let dumb adults vote, why not let smart youth vote? Not all youth is immature or dumb and at most times, they can be smarter than adults. Think about this, what if we do let 16 year olds vote, they can be an amazing change in the voting standards, and can turn a vote from one candidate to
On debate.org 75% Say that 21 year olds should vote and 25% say 18 Year olds should vote. When you come out of high school most high schoolers have no clue who to vote for and so they vote randomly and sometimes is not The right party. If a 18 year old is not responsible for drinking they should not be responsible voting.
16, 17, all the way 24 are the people who are usually interested in politics, lowering the age can bring new and interesting changes if they vote. We are the lowest when it comes to participation in voting, Austria has their age set at 16 and they have the a phenomenal rate, capping at 98%! There are people who think that young people shouldn't be added to the electorate, I say those people are Elitists. You shouldn't be close minded about this because if it works for other countries, it can work for America too! This is the land of the free, we should be able to give young adults a say in the matter
I believe that kids should not be able to vote. Every four years, the tension rises. All about the concept of getting a new president. The months of preparation, the late nights spent up watching campaigns, or speeches from the candidates. Getting a new president can change the way we live forever. But then there are small elections. Such as getting a new treasurer in your township, or a new mayor. Those can also change the way we live, for good or for bad. All of these things have to do with voting. Adding kids into all this can help to lead us to bad. Most children are either too lazy, too busy, they do not care, or they are not interested in all the politics. Also, if kids start to listen to what the candidates or people say, they say
When a teenager finally receives the right to acquire a license and earns this little plastic card. Through a long course of taking classes, filling out papers, and yes even driving with their parents for over a year. They find out they have many restrictions sense they have only received a limited provisional license and not a full provisional license telling them where and even when they can drive on their own. Allowing them to only drive from five in the morning to nine at night with very few exceptions.
I think the voting age should not be lowered to 13. Right now the minimum voting age is set at 18 years. When the US was founded, the minimum age to vote was 21 years, but after debates it was lowered to 18 years. When people reach 21, they are considered to be adults. Currently there are people talking about whether to lower the voting age to 13.
In the prime of the Vietnam War, most Americans realized the confusing double standard in sending 18-year-old soldiers to fight and then later on die in combat for their country at the same time they weren’t allowed to vote. If 18 year olds are being drafted into war and fight for their country, wouldn’t you question their inability to vote? For whatever reason the government thinks 18 year olds are responsible and mature enough to carry high powered assault rifles in war, yet, they don’t think they are responsible enough to vote for a new president. Before the passing of the 26th Amendment (the fastest amendment to be ratified in U.S. history) in 1971, the age 21 was the minimum voting age in most of the states. Congress lowered the nationwide voting age to 18 as a retaliation to calm the intense and passionate debate about the Vietnam War. Many people felt that kids who were old enough to be drafted into the war should also be able to vote. Some people may ask why should 18 be the legal age for
How old is old enough to drive? Most would argue the legal driving age of sixteen seems appropriate for someone to begin taking the wheel, while others say that twenty-one is a more sufficient age. Even though raising or maintaining the driving age at sixteen contain both pros and cons, major facts need to come to consideration if the driving age ever increases. As a teenager driving, I believe that people wanting to raise the driving age do not realize the negative effect that that would cause. For instance, if the age increased, teenagers would lose independence and freedom, parents would have to sacrifice their time and freedom, and even though teenagers die in car crashes every year, it would not decrease the overall number of deaths per year.
When voting in an election, you are deciding who you would like to become a politician and representative depending on the views of citizens when decisions are made. Voting in a referendum is different, because you are helping the Government to decide on doing or not a very important event. For instant, in B.C. there was a vote for new Metro Vancouver tax, transit improvements. Voting is our opportunity to decide who will be the best people to make decisions for us. These people become the government. We can choose who becomes a politician because we live in a democracy meaning, the people who live in a country get to decide who runs the country. Politicians must listen to the peoples opinion because if he doesn’t the people might try to throw that politician down. Voting is very important to a country’s living, and I think voting age should not be lowered to the age of thirteen.
