I. Introduction A. Should 16 year old teenagers be able to drive?
B. “Those who favor raising the driving age say that statistics show teenagers are more likely to get into accidents than adults. What they don't say is that statistics also show that men of all ages are 77 percent more likely to kill someone while driving than women. If people want to save lives by raising the driving age, then how about saving lives by allowing only women to drive? Except raising the driving age won't save lives. Studies show that it is inexperience, not age, that causes accidents. Raising the driving age will just create inexperienced, accident-prone drivers at 18 instead of 16. Teens need the ability to drive just as much as anyone else—to get to school,

...year, raising the minimum driving age to 16 seems hopeful in making safer roads for society. In doing so we all should strongly encourage our teenage drivers to be more mature, to pay more attention, to be more confident in their driving, and to not think that they are so invincible to accidents.
Driving is something people do everyday. Although many people do it well, some do not, that being said the legal age to drive should be raised to twenty one years of age. The driving age should be raised because teens at the ages of fourteen through twenty should not be behind the wheel for the simple fact that they are just too young and too inexperienced to drive, also someone of that age can get more distracted than a person who is twenty-one or older and has had some time to mature and become responsible enough to operate a motor vehicle. “In the United States, 16–19-year-olds have the highest incidence of motor vehicle deaths among licensed drivers and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15–20-year-olds.” (Haggerty
Driving allows people to go from one place to another faster. Some believe that nobody under the age of twenty-one should be allowed to drive. The problem here is that teenagers have places to be as well. These places might be school or work, which are both important. The driving age requirement should remain at sixteen.
In recent years, the legal driving age has become a topic of heated debate. There are many supporters that advocate for raising the legal driving age to eighteen or twenty-one. However, raising the driving age would cause some major problems. Sixteen should remain the legal driving age in most states and areas because the economic burden would be extremely large and the problems related to young drivers would not be adequately solved by simply rising the legal driving age. This essay will outline the reasons why the legal driving age should not be raised and what some of the better choices are instead.
Another reason the driving age should be raised is because younger kids tend to get very distracted. Kids can get distracted by phones or even a sign. If they were more mature they would they would not get distracted. Since they get distracted they veer off the road and crash.
... middle of paper ... ... Even though teen drivers make up a small percentage of the population, the most fatal crashes are the result of one behind the wheel; therefore the legal driving age needs to be raised to eighteen years of age. Engines roaring and cars flying down the highway recklessly, racing to the finish. This is a stereotyped outlook on teen drivers. This however, is not the case. Teens don’t drive to race down the road. They drive for freedom. They drive to get where they need to be on their own. The driving age should not be raised to 18 because it takes away their feeling of freedom, Denies the access to needed transportation, denies experience, It puts additional stress on parents, and they need to be learning the driving skill while they’re young.
I think the driving age should still be 16, but a lot of people disagree and think that it should be 18. I Think the average person should be able to drive at the age of 16, because that way, they can take themselves to destinations without having to ask their parents. They are also able to get jobs and earn money to get gasoline.
More than 5,000 teenagers die while driving each year in the United States (Gregory). In my opinion this is due to three different, yet equally important factors. The first factor is that the teenage mind is yet to be fully developed, causing them to make irresponsible and sometimes reckless decisions. The second factor is that the experience of driving has evolved since the original driving age was established in the early 20th century. The third and final aspect to take into consideration would be that driving is the lowest minimum age of any adult restricted activity in the United States. Although, it can be one of the more harmful, not only to the perspective driver but his or her surroundings as well. Taking all three of these factors into account I believe the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 to decrease the accident rate amongst teenagers.
In the state of Virginia the minimum driving age is 16 years and three months. Many people argue that this age should be raised to give teenagers more time to development, and understand the consequences of not being a safe driver. 5,864 teen drivers ages ranging from 15 to 20 were involved in fatal car accidents this past year alone. Adolescent drivers between 15 and 20 years-old accounted for 13.2 million of total drivers on the road. An average of nine teens ages 16 to 19 were killed every day from motor vehicle injuries. These help to assure why the minimum driving age needs to be raised. The reasons being that teenagers lack concentration, sense of danger, and responsibility as a driver.
They should raise the age for a driver’s license because Tougher laws prevent accidents. In 2008 12 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes were young drivers age 15 to 20 years old. In other words, they should raise the driving age because it would cause less accidents. Among 15-20-year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2008, 30 percent (291) of those who did not have valid operator’s license at the time of the crash also had previous license suspensions or revocations. This proves that
Sixteen year olds have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. “ in 2011, teenagers accounted for 10 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths” (Teen Driving Statistics). For this purpose, Many states have begun to raise the age limit by imposing restrictions on sixteen years old drivers. For example, limiting the number of passengers they can carry while driving. “The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report in May 2012 that showed that the risk of 16- or 17-year old drivers being killed in a crash increases with each additional teenage passenger in the vehicle. The risk increases 44 percent with one passenger; it doubles with two passengers, and quadruples with three or more passengers. The study analyzed crash data and the number of miles driven by 16- and 17-year olds” (Teen Driving Statistics). Another example, is that many people believe that teenage drivers have a race boy/girl mentality. This mean that when any teenager gets into a vehicle of any kind they get some type of thrilled or that the driving laws do not accommodate them in any way, shape, or form. They would go drag race ...
If we were to raise the driving age it would most likely be changed to 18. The best reasons for raising it to 18 would probably be that they are more responsible. “Children are not equipped to handle these vehicles, which are hard for even an experienced, adult driver to handle.” (Ron Shaffer) They have More money because of there jobs and if you go away from home you need a license.
Driving a car and obtaining a driver’s license does perhaps seem to provide people with a great sense of independence and freedom. Teenagers need to feel independent in order to learn to become successful on their own as well as realize how to handle life situations on their own, and having a license seems the perfect start and most effective way to do so. When teenagers feel this independence they tend to act more mature, knowing the responsibilities they must now carry on their own (More4Kids). Teenagers often look forward to the freedom that driving offers as well. Teenagers are able to take drives to escape from life’s many stressed, and leave any troubles at home behind without rebelling out against their loved ones.
There are three stages of getting a license and people shouldn’t be qualified to receive their license until they reach 20. The cost, insurance, and the age is the reason why the current driving age need to be raised. By having the drivers age at 16 there are a lot of accidents. The total of accidents by teenage driving is more than drivers that are older and had greater experience. If the age of driving was raised a little higher this would lower the number of accidents because people would have a greater compassion of what they are doing.
