In the state of Virginia the minimum driving age is 16 years and three months. Many people argue that this age should be raised to give teenagers more time to development, and understand the consequences of not being a safe driver. 5,864 teen drivers ages ranging from 15 to 20 were involved in fatal car accidents this past year alone. Adolescent drivers between 15 and 20 years-old accounted for 13.2 million of total drivers on the road. An average of nine teens ages 16 to 19 were killed every day from motor vehicle injuries. These help to assure why the minimum driving age needs to be raised. The reasons being that teenagers lack concentration, sense of danger, and responsibility as a driver. and its surroundings are very important to any driver. Seeing the car change lanes in front can make the difference between life or death. Teenagers go through what seems to be a stress filled and busy life. They go through conflicts each day with teachers, peers, coaches, siblings, and parents. With all these different miniscule problems running through a person’s head it is understandable that someone might not always be focused directly on the road. This lack of concentration can lead to car accidents, tickets, and vehicular equipment malfunctions. So if a person that has trouble paying attention to a teacher lecture; how would they be able to pay attention to the road? For example an adolescent man that goes to Radford High School got into a crash this summer after his concentrations on his surroundings were lost. The young man was driving up the curvy roads in Lovely Mountain Drive with four of his friends. Let in be included this is three more people than instructed by the law for his age. They were all cracking jokes and listening to music at high volume, when the driver went into a curve too fast and flipped his car. This is a significant reason that the driving age should be raised. This would allow teens such as this person more time to develop concentration skills and responsibility. Peer pressure is seen a tremendous amount in our society today. Teens and young adults are always wanting to fit in with the crowd; whether that means wearing a certain style of clothes or trying tobacco or other drugs. One example of peer pressure that is seen a lot is how a teenager should drive. It is almost expected that a teen isn’t good driver unless they can drive at high speeds under control. Kids are seen bragging about how fast they have gone on the interstate or how they got out of a ticket. Other kids are seen being made fun of for driving too slow, influencing these kids to become reckless drivers. These are definitely habits that are not desirable for young adults. Though these are bad even worst cases of peer pressure involved the use of illegal substances and driving. Everyday in the United States at least one young person will try alcohol, marijuana or pills. Combined for the fact that at least one young person acquires their license every day this makes a deadly combination. WIth plenty of young people being pressured into trying new things many kids are in situations that could involve drunk driving. With high school being the time that kids start getting exposed to the world of drugs wouldn’t it be wise for them not to be driving at the same time? So what are arguments for the driving age staying the same?
Some arguments are that not all teenagers are irresponsible, that it makes a parent's life easier and that it is a rite of passage. Well many tend to differentiate from these ideas. First off although all teens may not be irresponsible almost all tend to slip up every once in awhile. That one slip up can be fatal if it involves driving; so why take the chance at a young person’s life? The next argument is that life becomes easier for a family once a child is able to take themselves to places like school and practice. While this may be true it causes other problems. Teens don’t always listen and this freedom allows them to go places that they aren’t supposed to, leading them towards many different types of danger. Which is better having your son or daughter drop off the rest of the kids at practice, or having them alive, but not driving? The answer seems to be quite obvious. Lastly some say that getting your license at age 16 is a rite of passage. That since this person received their license at 16 then so should everyone else. What kind of way of thinking is that? Just because someone else did it, so should the next person. Are these people saying that it one kid jumps off a bridge so should the rest? No they aren’t. So it should be realsised that tradition is no answer to why something shouldn’t change. If people thought this way women couldn’t vote and slavery would still
exist. If people really do change the driving age to eighteen, they should for three main reasons. Older teens will be much more responsible, mature, and educated to be driving on the roads than sixteen year olds. Most eighteen year olds will have graduated high school and be away from peer pressure and a majority of drug culture. There also will be much less teen fatalities than are reported from as of right now. People must become open to changing the laws governing teen driving soon; because every minute we wait another life is being lost.
I. Introduction A. Should 16 year old teenagers be able to drive? B. “Those who favor raising the driving age say that statistics show teenagers are more likely to get into accidents than adults. What they don't say is that statistics also show that men of all ages are 77 percent more likely to kill someone while driving than women.
Just like the teenage boy that died in the wreck, most young teen drivers think they are invincible and are owners of the road which is all due to lack of maturity. The mind set of young drivers now days is “I’m too young to die”, or “it wont happen to me” and they are so blinded by the immature thinking that it gets them in trouble. Some traits generally linked with the immaturity are: chance taking, testing limits, poor-decision making, overconfidence, speeding, following to closely, and dangerous passing (Williams). When you have youthful age and immature characteristics combined the crash possibility is enlarged. The 15-16 age groups are among the most accident prone of most groups (“Don’t”), so why then would we want them behind the wheel? “Most U.S. states license at age 16, but the minimum age for a regular license is 14 in South Dakota and 15 in five other states including: Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and South Carolina”, stated Allan F. Williams. Youthful age and immature thinking is part of the reason wh...
Driving is something people do everyday. Although many people do it well, some do not, that being said the legal age to drive should be raised to twenty one years of age. The driving age should be raised because teens at the ages of fourteen through twenty should not be behind the wheel for the simple fact that they are just too young and too inexperienced to drive, also someone of that age can get more distracted than a person who is twenty-one or older and has had some time to mature and become responsible enough to operate a motor vehicle. “In the United States, 16–19-year-olds have the highest incidence of motor vehicle deaths among licensed drivers and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15–20-year-olds.” (Haggerty
Motor vehicles accidents are the leading cause of deaths for teenagers in the United States. According to Vivian Hamilton, “Car crashes kill more teens each year than any other cause” (1). In 2010, seven teenagers from ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle crashes. In 2011, approximately 1972 young drivers, ages 15 to 20, were killed in motor vehicle crashes (Facts About Teen Drivers”). The age of which a person can drive legally varies from country to county. In the United State, individuals are allow to take a driving test before their legal voting age which is eighteen or legal ...
Most people look forward to their 16th birthday because they are legal to drive. In 2012 there was 13,891 car crashes were reported but over 900 people were killed. Alcohol played a role in 260 fatal crashes. Speeding was a factor in13.2 percent of fatal crashes. So should we Michigan raise the driving age? Yes, Michigan’s driving age should be raised because of the number of people getting killed , having distractions and the fact that teens don’t care what could happen.
You are 14 and you can drive responsibly and properly. and there is a 24 year old man who drives drunk and recklessly and yet he is allowed to get his license .but you are not.in this eassey the writter is going to argue and dissuse why new zealand should decrease the age to get a learnes driveing lincese from the age of 16 to 14 years.
... middle of paper ... ... Even though teen drivers make up a small percentage of the population, the most fatal crashes are the result of one behind the wheel; therefore the legal driving age needs to be raised to eighteen years of age. Engines roaring and cars flying down the highway recklessly, racing to the finish. This is a stereotyped outlook on teen drivers. This however, is not the case. Teens don’t drive to race down the road. They drive for freedom. They drive to get where they need to be on their own. The driving age should not be raised to 18 because it takes away their feeling of freedom, Denies the access to needed transportation, denies experience, It puts additional stress on parents, and they need to be learning the driving skill while they’re young.
More than 5,000 teenagers die while driving each year in the United States (Gregory). In my opinion this is due to three different, yet equally important factors. The first factor is that the teenage mind is yet to be fully developed, causing them to make irresponsible and sometimes reckless decisions. The second factor is that the experience of driving has evolved since the original driving age was established in the early 20th century. The third and final aspect to take into consideration would be that driving is the lowest minimum age of any adult restricted activity in the United States. Although, it can be one of the more harmful, not only to the perspective driver but his or her surroundings as well. Taking all three of these factors into account I believe the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 to decrease the accident rate amongst teenagers.
Sixteen year olds have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. “ in 2011, teenagers accounted for 10 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths” (Teen Driving Statistics). For this purpose, Many states have begun to raise the age limit by imposing restrictions on sixteen years old drivers. For example, limiting the number of passengers they can carry while driving. “The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report in May 2012 that showed that the risk of 16- or 17-year old drivers being killed in a crash increases with each additional teenage passenger in the vehicle. The risk increases 44 percent with one passenger; it doubles with two passengers, and quadruples with three or more passengers. The study analyzed crash data and the number of miles driven by 16- and 17-year olds” (Teen Driving Statistics). Another example, is that many people believe that teenage drivers have a race boy/girl mentality. This mean that when any teenager gets into a vehicle of any kind they get some type of thrilled or that the driving laws do not accommodate them in any way, shape, or form. They would go drag race ...
Many people think about wanting to change the driving age. Doing this would not be a good idea because lowering it would put irresponsible people behind the wheel of a dangerous vehicle. Driving is one of the most dangerous things that most people don’t even think about, but they do it every day. In many senses the driving age should get higher. Many drivers are not responsible or mature enough to operate a vehicle.
Should the driving age be lowered to 14 years of age? Yes, it should! I think there are many reasons why it should be lowered. Some articles say that in some of the states all over America, many teens have the opportunity to get their "full" license at age 16. In the state of South Dakota, you are permitted to get your drivers license at 14.
How old is it to drive? Most would argue the legal driving age of sixteen seems appropriate for someone to begin taking the wheel, while others say that twenty-one is a more sufficient age. Even though raising or maintaining the driving age at sixteen contains both pros and cons, major facts need to come to consideration if the driving age ever increases. As a teenager driving, I believe that people wanting to raise the driving age do not realize the negative effect that that would cause. For instance, if the age increased, teenagers would lose independence and freedom, parents would have to sacrifice their time and freedom, and even though teenagers die in car crashes every year, it would not decrease the overall number of deaths per year.
I am on my final semester of community college at Glendale Community College and I will be attending Arizona State University in fall 2016. Raising the minimum driving age would simply make the riskiest drivers on the road a little bit older. I believe the driving age of sixteen is the perfect age. When people are sixteen, they live at home which means they have more rules against them which is part of their driving privileges. If the driving age was increased, say to eighteen, the driver may not be living at home
“Kids nowadays need to be more prepared. At the age of 16 we are expected to have jobs which we can go to and from ourselves. Many people do not have the time to get their permit or license before that age, leaving them sorely behind. If the permit age was 13, and the license age was 15, then people would have more time to prepare for the common driving that they would have to do, and since people under
