According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, to censor something means “… to remove things that are considered to be offensive, immoral, harmful to society, etc.” In other words, when something has been censored, someone has deliberately covered up or taken out part of it in order to prevent people from being offended. Censorship can also be used to keep young children from being exposed to harmful content. Just about every form of entertainment, such as movies, music, books and the radio, is censored. One of the most censored types of entertainment is television. The history of censorship on television shows that the amount of censorship has decreased over time. The people making these arguments are mainly parents who want their children to be watching “kid-friendly” shows. Congress should allow the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to be able to take more action in relating what is shown on television so that there are more diverse standards for the film making industry. However, not every program has to be kid friendly. In order to cater to everyone’s needs, there should be a specific set of rules for each network that corresponds to the average age of the audience. For example, Nick Jr., whose audience is preschoolers and young children, should have a separate set of rules from HBO, whose target audience is adults. This way, children would not exposed to mature content at a young age and adults would not stuck watching shows like “Sesame Street.” There are also many things to learn by observing audiences from other countries and seeing their reactions to the amount of censorship in their country. This would also create more equality between broadcasted, basic cable, and premium cable. The difference between basic and premium cable is as follows: Basic cable channels, such as ABC, TNT, and Lifetime, are available to anyone who has cable TV but premium cable channels, such as HBO, Starz, and Showtime, require a subscription and cost extra money to watch. When it comes to making a profit, this means basic cable channels receive a majority of their fundings from advertising (commercials) and premium cable channels make their money mainly from subscriptions (huffingtonpost.com). This relates to the amount of censorship shown because many advertisers’ aim to be family oriented and don’t want their commercials being associated with a program that shows nudity and explicit language so basic cable channels will tend to be more cautious of what to show their viewers. On the other hand, premium channels don’t need to worry about censoring a too much as long as they still have enough subscribers. If the FCC was in charge of all networks and channels, they would be able to install a firm set of guidelines and laws about for everyone to follow, making the amount of censorship more evenly distributed throughout all
