“Diets, like clothes, should be tailored to you,” said Joan Rivers (Brainy, n.p.). In America, many people throughout the nation are on some sort of diet; regular diet or a fad diet. America is known for preposterous diet plans. Many people in America are overweight and quick to drop pounds, but fad diets are not the way to go. A weight loss plan that allows someone to lose a lot of weight in such a little amount of time is a fad diet. A fad diet usually does not last for a long-term goal, but only a short-term goal. Although people lose a lot of weight so fast, fad diets are unhealthy. Fad diets date back to almost a two centuries ago with the first known diet to be in 1820. In 1820, Lord Byron made the diet, water and apple cider vinegar, …show more content…
Americans spend approximately thirty billion dollars a year on trying to lose weight with pills, weight loss programs, and special foods. But of the fifty-million Americans who go a diet that year, only five percent successfully keep the weight off. One of the biggest reasons as why Americans go on fad diets is to improve on their appearance and health. There is no doubt that carrying excessive fat can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancers. The biggest issue with carrying around excessive fat is becoming obese which comes with its own health factors like shortening that person’s life. Fad diets appeal to young Americans who have no skill and any knowledge to properly lose the extra pounds. Diet companies use appealing advertisements to increase their costumer rates. These particular advertisements could tell the viewers that going on that fad diet could make them look skinny and decrease health factors that come with people overweight. With this being said, the people who go on fad diets falsely believe that they can suddenly maintain a lower body weight only by restricting certain foods, dangerous diet pills or bizarre food combinations. Another reason Americans chose fad diets is because they believe that they work. This is because they know a family member or a friend who lost weight by taking a pill or drinking a special shake without having to work out. Fad diets do work, but only for a short time. Some Americans enjoy fad diets because of the time and simplicity of these diets. Because exercising takes time, many fad diets allow people to not work out. With that being said, no working out and losing rapid weight is a plus for Americans. With the simplicity of fad diets telling people what to do with a step-by-step food plan, the thought process of Americans do not have to work as hard as if they were on a healthy-eating diet. Because of how simple and
“…So many people want to know about diets because so many people are going to try them, but they don’t work … some weight will be lost temporarily.” Harvey Diamond, author, was speaking. “But let me ask you something – do you want to be healthy temporarily? No. But you want to lose weight temporarily. They’re – They have failures built right into them.”
But not all fad diets are necessarily bad; some fad diets help with portions but are not supposed to be used for long periods of time. Weight Watchers for example, is supposed to help its users lose 10% of their body weight and then after
The book begins with the question of “What should we have for dinner?” and stands to answer that question the rest of the way. Speaking directly of Americans, Pollan explains in-depth how the Nation tends to jump from fad to fad, first being afraid of carbohydrates, and then switching to fats, and so on. He goes on to explain where this thought process might have come from with the history of the Carter administration in 1977, as dietary goals were issued and the red meat lovers of America were warned to cut back. From that time on it has been an ever-changing lipo-, carbo-, phobia, with a cycle of weight loss and gain. With this question at hand, Michael Pollan begins to dive de...
Imagine a diet with quick weight loss, and being able to see immense results in only a few months, sounds like the life doesn’t it? Well the impossible has finally become possible with the help of special diets, otherwise known as FAD diets. FAD diets are known as weight reducing diets of extreme nature that either eliminate one or more of the essential food groups or enhance the consumption of one group of food in excess, and intend to produce results more quickly than diet-exercise combinations. One specific FAD diet is known as the Cookie diet.
Some evidence points out too much food and not enough exercise as one of the main causes. According to the publichealth.org website, “Americans are notorious for their fast-food consumption ― such food makes up about 11% of the average American diet. Another study demonstrates the full effect added sugars from soda and energy drinks are wreaking havoc on American waistlines.” So it is not just how much we eat, but what we eat? On the other hand, Americans spent more than $50 billion annually on quick diet scheme, books, and work-out videos to lose weight. Most especially as a New Year’s resolution wish having had too much holiday dinners and parties. The irony of the mixed messages on health, and food consumption in America could send anyone to a therapist chair on conflicting emotions about food and

The irony is the fact that a majority of Americans are fat by national standards. Over 90 percent of women don't conform to the diet standards developed by insurance companies in the 60s. The media create a need to lose weight because they realize most Americans aren't statistically thin. By creating a standard of what is "normal" and then creating a need to achieve this normality, an industry of dependence is born - dependence upon diet pr...
One of the main differences between healthy diet and exercise and fad dieting is they can yield very different long term results. When fad dieting, you may be able to drop quite a bit of weight in a short period of time, but rest assured you will most likely see those pounds again. Fad diets focus on losing weight too quickly. The initial weight you lose is water weight, but as soon as you go back to regular food the pounds lost will return. Fad dieting can also wreak havoc on your muscles, and cause your body to go into starvation mode. Fad dieting works off of the idea that since your body needs fat to produce energy, it will burn the access fat that is stored to get that energy. The problem with this theory is that when you deprive your body of the necessary nutrients it needs, it then stores all the fat it can and starts burning energy from your muscles. The loss of your muscles slows down your metabolism, thus making it more difficult to lose weight in the long run. Healthy dieting promotes a lifestyle change, allowing for results...
No one wants to be or feel like they are overweight, unhealthy, or unattractive. When someone in the general public looks in the mirror or steps on the scale, and they are not satisfied with what is being shown, one of the first ideas to bubble to the surface is dieting. There are so many dieting solutions out there and one of the most popular are the fad diets. Dieting should be about getting healthy and losing weight in a healthy way. Fad diets however, are about losing a lot of weight in a disproportionally short amount of time. Due to the loss of weight that the dieter wanted, when they reach their goal weight, they stop doing the fad diet and go back to their regular diet. This causes the weight that they shed to be put back on again in a disproportionally short amount of time, which is also just as unhealthy. This cycle of losing and gaining weight is only one of the many dangers of fad diets.

The fact is that in our country, any government intrusion looks undesirable. We are so used to making free choice and to having access to everything we need and want that we have already forgotten the value and usefulness of the government control. No, that does not mean that the government must control everything and everyone. What I mean here is that the government control should be balanced with the freedom of choice. Unfortunately, plentiful foods do not lead to improved health conditions. We cannot always make a relevant choice. Our hurried lifestyles make us extremely fast, and eating is not an exception. We eat fast, but fast does not always mean useful. I believe, and in this essay I argue that the government must have a say in our diets. Because there are so many obese people, because obesity is an expensive disease, and because very often it is due to poverty that people cannot afford healthy foods, the government must control the amount and the range of foods which we buy and eat. Healthy foods must become affordable. Poor populations must have access to high quality foods. The production of harmful foods should be limited. All these would be impossible if the government does not take active position against our diets.
Obesity in the United States is a major issue. Because there is such a high obesity rate, there have been so many diets established to try and reduce these constantly rising rates. A lot of these weight-loss diets that have been established are known as fad diets. A fad diet is a diet that becomes popular quickly, and may die out just as quickly. In the United States, there are some popular and healthy fad diets such as the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, and Weight Watchers.
A sad fact in American society is that thousands of people search for the elusive dream of being thin. On any given day, one finds neighbors, friends, and relatives on some kind of diet. Dieters assume various disguises, but the noteworthy ones are the "bandwagoneer," the "promiser" and the "lethal loser."
Fads diets deliver immediate results in weight management, which helps in preventing weight-related health issues. This helps in reducing the risks of hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases.
