How would you feel if the typical school day of all public schools in your city was extended? In fact, the majority of students, parents, and schools would find this to be absolutely outrageous. Currently, The mayor of NYC is contemplating lengthening regular public school day two hours. He feels that this would be a great opportunity for students to get additional homework help from their teachers. I strongly feel that lengthening school days would be very unnecessary and would not exhibit any beneficial effects on students, parents, and public schools. For instance, students would not have any time to balance multiple things in one school day, parents would be conflicted over work schedules and public schools would find trouble funding the lengthened school days. For one thing, it would be harder for them to balance studying, homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, social lives, and sleep in such little time everyday. In fact, you would find more and more students dropping out of after school clubs or sports in order to get things done more efficiently. Otherwise, you would find a vast number of students’ grades to lower drastically due to lack of time to study for tests and quizzes. Similarly, there would also be less homework being done from students who were unable to find the time to complete it. To further develop, throughout the extended school day, the adolescents mind would begin to lose focus because of the large amount of time being spent in that school or from tiredness due to lack of sleep. This cancels out the argument made by many, that students would be able to learn more if they indeed had lengthened school
