Crime based films are intentionally designed and created to make the human body experience raw and confronting emotions such as fear and insecurity. The most popular films are ones that contain a vast amount of crime, horror, action and violence. The factors that make these movies so popular and appealing is due to the films entertainment qualities such as; the thrill and shock the body experiences during the movie, the relevance of it and last of all due to it being unrealistic (Griffiths 2015). Although the primary goal of a crime film is to experience the feelings of fear and insecurity, there are many negative short and long term effects that can also arise from feeling such emotions and thus viewing an explicit crime film in itself. For example, one of the most common side effects after observing a horror film is sleeplessness (Osman 2015). Recent studies have illustrated that the effect of sleeplessness post watching a horror film can be caused by a number reasons such as: the film portrayed an extensive amount of scary qualities and therefore installing fear in the individual in which they are too frightened to even sleep (Osman 2015). Another reason being that the film had triggered a past traumatic experience for that individual in which also results into sleep deprivation (Osman 2015). A much longer term effect after viewing a horror movie is anxiety. It has been discovered by a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin that children under the age of 14 who have seen such a film is most likely to develop this effect in their adulthood (Osman 2015). It can be stated that anxiety and being sleep deprived after watching a horror film is unhealthy and therefore causes the effects of tension, fear and insecurity in which can then lead to criminality. For instance, there have been many cases where observing a horror film has produced real-life effects. To be specific the Tinling case portrayed a male killing their neighbour exactly the way it was displayed within the “Saw” film (Robinson 2013). Henceforth, when watching a horror/crime based film, the effects of tension and insecurity can certainly be achieved within a person and can cause severe short and long term
2. According to Sobchack, contemporary screen violence greatly differs than portrayals of violence in years past. Today, violent scenes are careless and lack significance because we as audiences have become calloused and desensitized to any acts of violence. She states that there is “no grace or benediction attached to violence. Indeed, its very intensity seems diminished” (Sobchack 432). Senseless violence, gruesome acts, and profound amounts of gore are prevalent in movies today, and because even this is not enough, it must be accompanied by loud blasts and noise, constantly moving scenes to keep audiences stimulated and large quantities of violence for viewers to enjoy what they are watching. Decades ago, it was the story that was engaging to audiences and filmmaking was an art.
The article Why We Crave Horror Movies by Stephen King distinguishes why we truly do crave horror movies. Stephen King goes into depth on the many reasons on why we, as humans, find horror movies intriguing and how we all have some sort of insanity within us. He does this by using different rhetorical techniques and appealing to the audience through ways such as experience, emotion and logic. Apart from that he also relates a numerous amount of aspects on why we crave horror movies to our lives. Throughout this essay I will be evaluating the authors arguments and points on why society finds horror movies so desirable and captivating.
One could easily dismiss movies as superficial, unnecessarily violent spectacles, although such a viewpoint is distressingly pessimistic and myopic. In a given year, several films are released which have long-lasting effects on large numbers of individuals. These pictures speak
One of America’s famous actress film director and producer Katie Aselton once said,” I don’t love horror movies with something surreal happening. That doesn’t work for me. What’s terrifying is something that could actually happen to me and what I would do. I don’t know how to throw a punch, and I’ve never had to do it.” This quote shows connection to King’s article. I’m starting to consider that everyone has a crazy side. Why We Crave Horror Movies explains the reason people want to go see horror movies. The average person enjoys the horror movies because they are in a safe environment knowing they can not be harmed. By discussing the argumentative strategies such as ethos, logos,
Horror is one of many fears humans have. We all have many terrors, but horror is the one that gets the best of us. Some crave, while others resent, the feeling horror movies bring to our body and the emotions that we experience. In Stephen King’s article, “Why We Crave Horror,” he explains that it is a part of the “Human Condition,” to crave the horror. King gives many strong and accurate claims on why we crave the horror movies, such as; testing our ability to face our fears, to re-establish our feelings of normality, and to experience a peculiar sort of fun.
I have provided a clear evaluation of his essay in an organized way using the appropriate standards of evaluation. In understanding why humans “Crave Horror Movies” even when some people get nightmares after watching them we find the importance of our emotions and fears. We find those emotions and fears form a body of their own which needs to be maintained properly in order to remain healthy. We see how emotions can be controlled though viewing horror movies. Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” is a well written essay with convincing analogies, comparisons, and urban humor.
Horror movies bring out the worst in us and for all the right reasons. King’s big idea suggests that by watching our mad, deranged role models slaughter one another, is actually keep us in line mentally. It allows us to stay sane and untroubled. Watching others do the dirty work gives us a sense of relief. Even though watching horror movies are filled with basic reasons of having fun, there is a deeper, psychological level of human emotions that is essential to our mental
It amuses us to watch what we know will never happen. As King had said in his essay, “The fun comes from seeing others menaced - sometimes killed,” (King, “Why We Crave” 2). Accordingly, King had proposed that “we’re all mentally ill,” and theses emotions are part of the Human Condition (1). Just as we cry to release our sadness, we also need to find a way to express our insanity. We need horror films as cathartic release to be able to be “let loose to scream and roll around in the grass” (2).
Therefore, a horror movie can affect someone’s life for a long time. When I was a senior in high school, I was camping with my friends. One of my friends named Mckyle brought a light because he could not sleep without light, and he was scared of the dark. I was asking him why he was scared of darkness, and he told me a story about himself. He told me that he was watching a scary movie with his cousin when he was seven years old, and the movie was talking about a spirit would come out when the light turned off. Therefore, he had a phobia of dark. This horror movie affected his life for a long time because he was sleeping with light more than ten years, and he still needed the light for sleeping. If he slept without light, he could not sleep at all. Also, he would have a nightmare about the movie. Until now, he still cannot sleep without light, and he is still scared of darkness. He never watches a horror movie in his life because it will remind him the spirit. Therefore, a horror movie can affect people for a long time because horror movie may cause a phobia to anyone. Horror movies do not potentially benefit to all the
Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films often center on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films play with society’s fears, its nightmare’s and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown, the fear of death, the loss of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about. These creatures can range from vampires, madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, demons, zombies, evil spirits, satanic villains, the possessed, werewolves and freaks to the unseen and even the mere presence of evil.
Horror movies are one of the most fascinating genres of film that exists. They are unrealistic but at the same time, they are also realistic. This realism that they contain is what draws people’s interest towards them because viewers are able to associate aspects of their own lives with the film. Every horror movie, no matter how farfetched the theme or plot may be, contains an element that people can relate to. This element may not be observable to a conscious mind, but to an unconscious mind, it brings back memories of something that has been repressed earlier in our lives (Wood, 197). This recollection of suppressed memories is how horror films create a sense of fear and it is literally what Robin Wood means when he talks about “the return
People are addicted to the synthetic feeling of being terrified. Modern day horror films are very different from the first horror films which date back to the late nineteenth century, but the goal of shocking the audience is still the same. Over the course of its existence, the horror industry has had to innovate new ways to keep its viewers on the edge of their seats. Horror films are frightening films created solely to ignite anxiety and panic within the viewers. Dread and alarm summon deep fears by captivating the audience with a shocking, terrifying, and unpredictable finale that leaves the viewer stunned.
We all have cravings, be it for snacks or sweets, there is always something we desire. We crave horror in the same way. In Stephen King’s essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” he argues that people need to watch horror films in order to release the negative emotions within us. King believes that people feel enjoyment while watching others be terrorized or killed in horror movies. King’s argument has elements that are both agreeable and disagreeable. On one hand he is acceptable when claiming we like the thrill and excitement that comes from watching horror movies; however, his views regarding that the fun comes from seeing others suffer cannot be agreed with because the human condition is not as immoral as he claims it to be.
A horror movie “makes people think, what if it was reality?” said by a thrill seeker person who was waiting to watch a horror movie. For instance, studies were made by the University of Michigan, which were focused on the influences of horror movies on children. They learned that 52 percent of kids who watched terrifying movies had very negative symptoms. They showed to have fears, sleep disruptions, shaking, anxiety and many more side effects. Most shockingly, those bloody and scary images from the movie will last for years. Some negative effects such as increased heart rate and shortness of breath may haunt kids until their
