Shit is one of the most popular and less frowned upon swear words in the modern age. Whether it’s as a noun, a verb, adjective (Bulson 2014) or plural, it has been around for a very long time frowned upon by one culture but embraced in another. According to The Origin of Swear Words (2008), the word shit appeared about 1,000 years ago as ‘skita’ an Old Norse origin. It morphed into Old English nouns as ‘scite’ which means dung and ‘scitte’ meaning diarrhea. Over time, it altered into Middle English as the nouns ‘schitte’ meaning excrement and ‘schyt’ (diarrhea) and the verb ‘shiten’ which means to defecate. Consequently, when someone wants to show indifference, a passive attitude towards something or simply that they don’t care about something, the term I don’t give a shit is used. The illustration 1 below goes even further to show its visual use. The lady’s facial expression seems to perfectly capture the emotions of the

The words Negro, nigger, and nigga have always been a sensitive topic, yet it is a topic that needs to be addressed in light of the more common use of its vernacular. One word is used to describe a color, while the others are used to define a people. It’s very clear to many the negative connotation these words carry, but where did these words come from? Furthermore, is there a difference between the word nigger and nigga; and why is it that African-Americans now use the word nigga to degrade each other in today’s society? These words, in spite of their spelling, still holds the same degrading power as it did during the time of slavery, and they are still spoken out of cruelty and ignorance, but who is to blame? Can one still blame the Spaniards for considering people of a darker skin tone –Black? Can we blame the Europeans for perpetuating their hatred and ignorance of superiority over a race of people to the point they felt it lawful to define and dehumanize them? Or does the blame lie with the African-American race as we use this degrading labeling on our own kind, thus becoming the victimizer. Either way nigger or nigga are words that should be eliminated from the vocabulary of every human being.

The Old English phrase, “cuntan heale” is something to look at. The root of the first word cuntan is more similar to the Modern English version of the word used today. The Wex Legal Dictionary describes the term obscenity as “lewd, filthy, or disgusting words or pictures,” speech that is not protected by the First Amendment (CIT1). Another way one could define this term is words, images, or actions that “offend the sexual morality of its viewers (CIT2).” It is perhaps unsurprising that, in the vast expanse of today’s Internet, where anyone in the world can upload whatever they please, words and images that fall under this category are quite common. Also unsurprising is the fact that there has been more than one court case involving this subject. Obscenity and the Internet often go hand in hand, and share an interesting past, present, and perhaps future.

The settlement of the British Isles by north Europeans followed by Norman French paints the backdrop to this essay which will focus on the period between the early 15th and 17th centuries, when a 'standard' English evolved. It will show that modern-day English is very different to that first introduced to the British Isles, but by identifying changes through time, its continuity can be demonstrated. Finally, it will suggest that present day English is in a position analogous to that which existed before the Norman invasion, when there were many varieties and dialects, and that this may lead to its decline as a global language, due to decreasing intelligibility.
