A shadowing experience can be simply about ‘shadowing’, or it can be much more than that. There are obvious limitations to shadowing, but in that lays its strengths. A shadow is not responsible for any direct patient care, and therefore the shadow’s attention can be focused on active observation. What do I mean by ‘active’ observation? Studies have found that approaching a subject with a serious of questions, not only improves attention and memory, but it also positively changes the learner’s attitude. Using this approach, I hope to gain the best shadowing experience. By doing this I will learn not only the clinical side of a physician’s practice, but also the role of a doctor in the macrocosm that is a hospital. I have many questions regarding
how a physician interacts with other staff, patients, and the patient’s family. What is expected from doctors of different specialties, how do they balance their personal and professional lives, how do physicians manage to stay up to date with new discoveries and treatments, how does a physician gauge his/her work, and how does this gauge differ in the patient’s and hospital’s perspectives; are some of the many questions I have. I am sure that many will be answered, and may more will arise. Deciding to become a physician is in many ways deciding your life’s work. A decision this big is both beyond complex, and subjective to each and every individual. Personally, I believe that the best way to introduce rational into this decision making process, is by exposing oneself to the practice. Gaining shadowing experience will also force myself to introspect in regards to my current beliefs about aspiring to become a physician. To do this prior to dedicating the better part of my youth to the training associated with the practice, is the wisest action I can take.
In the healthcare system many times patients are just patients and appointments are just appointments. The outlook on the patients and appointments all depends on the area of practice and the health professional themselves. Working in the emergency department, the nurses and doctors there typically do not see the same patient more than once and if they do the chance of them remembering them is slim to none just for the simple fact of the pace of the department. When it comes down to Physicians in the hospital setting, the care is not just quick and done. Great patient to healthcare professional relationships are formed and for some it may feel as if they are taking a “journey”(209) with their patients as they receive their medical care. This essay will be based off the book Medicine in Translation: Journeys with My Patients by Danielle Ofri, in which Ofri herself gives us the stories of the journeys she went on with several of her patients. Patients are more than just an appointment to some people, and when it comes to Ofri she tends to treat her patients as if they are her own family.
I selected to job shadow my mom actually because I couldn’t find anyone to shadow in the career that I wanted, so my only other choice was to do my mom. I wasn’t really too interested in doing that job at first, but that’s what I needed to do. I spent my day watching and helping my mom checking out stock systems and how it works. I was also able to use the office equipment. I wore nice black pants with a nice sweater. We left the building for lunch, and went somewhere else to eat, like my mom does a lot of the time. During the interview, I asked her the questions, and she answered, explaining as she went along, and I was not able to catch it all. So I learned a whole lot about the job by doing the interview. I left at about 2:00 to 3:00 (I am not too sure exactly when) because my mom had some important work she needed to do, that I really couldn’t help with. My favorite experience that day was actually finding out how stocks work, saving money, and information like that.
Some of the patients had children, which really broke my heart because I have kids and I couldn’t imagine being away from them for any period of time. In relation to the lecture content covered in this week’s lectures, I felt they related to clinical when describing the layout and description of the milieu. For example, I was able to see how the doors were securely locked, and the nursing station was behind an encasement called a bubble. In addition, we discussed the different type of therapies that were conducted on the floor.
The purpose of this essay is to reflect upon the teamwork and communication within the multi- disciplinary environment of the theatre suite. I will follow a patient on their journey along the Patient pathway, from their arrival in the anaesthetic room, through to them being handed over to the recovery staff. The patient pathway is described by the Department of Health (2007) as a timeline, on which every event relating to treatment can be entered. Events such as consultations, diagnosis, treatment, medication, diet, assessment and discharge can be mapped on this timeline. In this essay, I will use the Johns 1994 mode of reflection. The purpose of reflection, as stated by Johns (1994) is to promote desirable practice through the practitioners understanding and learning about their lived experiences. Patient trust and confidentiality will be maintained throughout, the patient referred to as Mrs X and any details will be improvised.
Working in the health care industry takes a lot of courage and patience in order to deal with different individual’s personalities and to be equipped to handle stressful situations according to the issues at hand. As a senior consultant at the Practical Health Care Consulting firm, my supervisor has instructed me to spend three months at the Caring Angel Hospital. While at the hospital there are a few tasks for improving the quality of care, adding value to the organization, improving employee morale, etc. Although these obstacles will be a challenge, there is an opportunity for improvement. This will allow the Caring Angel Hospital to increase revenue and accomplish the goals that are established.
It was becoming increasing clear to me that the hospital environment was a community that I knew one day I wanted to be a part of. For three summers, I shadowed one emergency room physician who has been an amazing role model and mentor. This exposure taught me not only a plethora of terms, but to think critically and quickly and to prioritize and reason in ways that had immediate benefit. I also learned a great deal about bedside manner, and how important it is to be culturally and emotionally sensitive to patients. Like my family, this physician noticed so many important things about people- who they are and what matters to them. She knew just when to touch someone on the shoulder, or to step back. She accounted for age and class and race and subtleties that don’t even have words. She viewed each patient as a whole person. One night a woman was brought into the ER after a car crash and needed a neurological exam immediately. She was wearing a hijab. This physician kindly addressed the woman and asked her if she wanted the door closed while she took off her hijab. They both knew the cultural significance, helping this patient to feel respected and less
The purpose of this essay is to reflect and critically study an incident from a clinical setting whilst using a model of reflection. This will allow me to analyse and make sense of the incident and draw conclusions relating to personal learning outcomes. The significance of critical analysis and critical incidents will briefly be discussed followed by the process of reflection using the chosen model. The incident will then be described and analysed and the people involved introduced. (The names of the people involved have been changed to protect their privacy) and then I will examine issues raised in light of the recent literature relating to the incident. My essay will include a discussion of communication, interpersonal skills used in the incident, and finally evidence based practice. I will conclude with explaining what I have learned from the experience and how it will change my future actions.
Have you ever wanted to try something out without actually having to pay for it first? Well, that is similar to my situation. I will job shadow someone that I want to someday be as patient, have great expert skills and have great people skills as. I will be job shadowing with someone who works all around the country to help people succeed. We use them all the time, in schools, offices, grocery stores, and even cars salesman! I will tell you about someone who helps fix machines including printers and copiers. He goes by the name of Gerald Holland.
During my observership, my clinic intern mentor was Shiyama Hassan. Overall it was an enjoyable, less stressful academic experience.I got a chance to take patient histories, examination and patient’s vital sign monitoring and charting. I didn’t feel much difference in observing my mentor taking the history and when I was taking the history, it could be related to my past experience. However, every time I was curious to know what is happening with the patients and what caused him to seek naturopathic medical advice. During this clinic shadowing, I saw genuine interest of my mentor and supervisor to help patients concerns, unlike to allopathic model of prescribing medication. It helped me to improve my interviewing skills to look root cause for
For my leadership paper I chose to shadow Sean Ennist, the Operating Room Director of Premier Bone and Joint Center, Laramie. Sean is an RNFA, so he often scrubs into surgery, but the first day I shadowed him he was filling in for a circulator. Seeing him a role that he was not as confident in made him more vulnerable, honest, and easier to connect with. This encounter happened on my very first day of senior capstone, so it was a great start. Within seconds of knowing he was a leader, I knew I wanted to shadow him. Sean is someone, even in a vulnerable state, that everyone in the operating room and facility respects.
A clinic and doctor 's office requires many positions that are crucial to a patient’s satisfaction, and one of the most important occupations is that of a medical assistant. Whilst their job may seem simple at first, much information, characteristics, and morals are to be expected in this medical field. Upon completing their educational requirements and proving their credibility, they may commence to search for a job in a variety of locations and opportunities. Once employed, they are responsible for operating either the front desk or the back, depending whether they are specialized as a clinical or administrative medical assistant. All in all, the simple role of a medical assistant has many requirements and
For my Job Shadowing assignment, I choose to shadow James Mascolo at Ongoing Operations in Hagerstown, MD. Ongoing Operations is a disaster recovery company that works with numerous Credit Unions and other entities to ensure that in the event of a disaster their data is secured. They are a very small company that offers these disaster recovery solutions all over the United States. The majority of the students emerge confused and frustrated. Some succumb to the academic pressure and exhibit sex and behavioral reversal. Some start regretting of opting to be doctors and considers changing the course. The tutors play a great deal at this stage. The students are given quality tips of living being a doctor. The students have to learn safety measures while at the hospital for self and the patient. In addition, the have to learn to outdo any existing phobia regarding patient and build up the courage. Moreover, the students are introduced to the legal aspects of
Had the opportunity to observe and work with surgeons, pain specialists and allied health professionals in both outpatient clinics and in theatre. I also gained valuable experience of working within hospital settings as part of my postgraduate paediatric training. I asked if it would be possible to attend in house staff tutorials and patient update meetings, which was a fascinating insight into how NHS medical teams manage patients, support each other and train junior member of staff. After some time I was invited to contribute I would be very interested in sharing these experiences and knowledge, and if the opportunity arose exploring this
Reflection is an important part of development and growth for all medical professionals. It gives us a chance to assess our assumptions and make active change in our behaviour towards both our patients and our team. This essay will specifically reflect on what is important in the doctor patient relationship. In order to provide direction for this reflection I chose to watch and review Patch Adams.
