The Role of a Medical Assistant A clinic and doctor 's office requires many positions that are crucial to a patient’s satisfaction, and one of the most important occupations is that of a medical assistant. Whilst their job may seem simple at first, much information, characteristics, and morals are to be expected in this medical field. Upon completing their educational requirements and proving their credibility, they may commence to search for a job in a variety of locations and opportunities. For example, both administrative and clinical medical assistants have to practice patient confidentiality, respect, sympathy, courtesy, friendliness, as well as helping out in their community and informing their patients. Medical assistants should also be well aware of a patient’s rights that are established by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) to promote excellent health care services. The patient has many rights, such as the right to medical care- meaning the patient has the right to receive high quality care and treatment but may also deny such treatment, respectful treatment, privacy, confidentiality, identity- a patient has the right to know the name and credibility of their healthcare provider, explanation of care- the patient has the right to be informed of their diagnosis and their treatment, informed consent, and a safe environment. Along with all of this, a medical assistant should have good communication skill, especially if seeking a job as an administrative medical assistant, and be able to work well under stressful situations and with various different people. An administrative assistant must be able to handle stress, multitask, and work well under pressure. There are multiple jobs that the administrative medical assistant is responsible for, such as, answering the phone, being able to use computer applications, triaging phone calls with the permission of the physician, scheduling appointments, filing patient charts, collecting money, filing insurance claims and medical coding. When answering a call, greeting a patient, or writing a letter they must do so in a professional matter. They must also have good communication skills and a good personality and be familiar with medical terminology and medical coding, and be able to help patients with their best of knowledge. Depending on the facility they work on, they may occasionally need to assistant in the back with taking vital signs, translation, if they are bilingual, or with patient education, as directed by the doctor.
