Sexual Orientation Discrimination Prejudice in the Workplace. Sexual orientation is “the clear, persistent desire of a person for affiliation with one sex rather than the other”, otherwise known as sexual preference. (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com) Prejudice against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals (otherwise known as LGBT people) remain widespread in American society. LGBT people have always been a target for discrimination. Like other forms of prejudice, this discrimination is based on a hostile attitude toward a specific group and in this case minority. The current strides in the controversy of the legalization of the same sex marriage is a prime example of this discrimination. Sexual orientation prejudice has damaged the reputation and wellbeing of these individuals, and therefor overstepped the boundary between discrimination and downright hatred. Research has determined that the majority of stable homosexual adult couples are in committed and long lasting relationships. Assumptions have been made that homosexuals base their sexual preference just on the pleasure of sex, and sometimes are misconstrued as perverts because of this. On the contrary, homosexual couples, like heterosexuals, form deep emotional attachments, ‘fall in love’, and remain loyal to a single partner. Researchers have found that “Being denied the right to marry reinforces the stigma associated with a minority sexual identity and that living in a state where same-sex marriage is outlawed can lead to chronic social stress and mental health problems.” (http://www.apa.org) Everyone has a sexual preference. For years homosexuality in the United States of America has been looked down upon by citizens, religions, and even politicians. The homosexual culture, or the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), has been demoralized and stuck out and lashed against by the Heterosexual community time and time again. To better understand the LGBT community we must first grasp the concept of Sexual Orientation.
In September 2011, the United States lifted the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (DADT), which restricted gay, lesbian, and bisexuals from openly serving in the military. This was the first time in American history in which people of every sexual orientation could serve openly (“11 Facts About,” n.d.). This was a momentous occasion for some and not so much for others. For those military members that had served in secret and those members that were firmly against gays and lesbians, this repeal had different meaning. Both groups contained members that have served in the military for years and were products of the Former President Bill Clinton’s 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. For many soldiers of this era, communication issues arose due to a pre-existing mentality, learned rules and regulations in services reinforced for two decades and the general cultural within combat related fields.

State legislation is changing such as accepting gay marriages, enforcing anti-discrimination laws, and legal gay adoptions; the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is becoming public. Gay-headed families, like heterosexuals, are diverse and varying in different forms.
A man is walking down to his bosses’ office, on his way to pick up his paycheck. As he approaches the door, his boss welcomes him in. His boss hands him his salary. The man thanks him and walks out. As the man looks, he soon realizes that he is paid less than his friend is. He begins to wonder why because he has the same qualifications and he works equally as hard. The man begins to wonder if discrimination against his sexuality is in the question. It is a proven fact that homosexual and bisexual men are paid 10-32 percent less than the average “straight” male. In this essay, the following topics will be discussed: what is discrimination, discrimination in the workplace, discrimination in the general public, how to resolve the issues of discrimination, the negative and even fatal outcomes of discrimination against people of other genders and sexualities, and what to do if a friend or family member shows any signs of these symptoms.

Within America’s society today, 3.8 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. With only 17 of the 50 states legalizing and recognizing this type of relationship (“History…”), it puts a stronghold on same-sex couples to publicly declare their love with the promise of marriage. Same-sex marriages should be legalized because everyone has equal rights of freedom and liberty.

Matthew Fields Professor Farr English 101 7 April 2017 Discrimination of Trans People in the Workplace There are over 1 million transgendered people in America, almost all of whom are a part of our nation’s strong workforce. Trans do not always wish to be defined by the categories of ‘man’ or ‘woman,’ which is why they prefer the term ‘trans’ instead of ‘transgender.’ Many do not identify as a gender at all and request that they are referred to with gender-neutral pronouns such as ‘they.’ There is nothing wrong with being different and being oneself; however, some people are unable to respect one another which often causes conflict in the workplace.
Firstly I will discuss the reasons for marriage equality. I argue marriage equality is in the best interest for family life. Allowing homosexuals to form stable committed relationships through marriage would allow for healthier homosexual relationships. You can’t prevent people from being homosexual however giving those people the right to marry can help them experience greater personal happiness. Studies have suggested that not only does legalizing marriage in an area generally make homosexual individuals in that area happier; it also makes them physically and mentally healthier and saves them money on health care (Hatzenbuehler, O’Cleirigh, Grasso, Mayer, Safren, & Bradford, 20012). I don’t see any compelling reason to take away the joy homosexuals get from marriage, this is one of the many reasons I support marriage equality.
Meanwhile, the encouragement of existing employees is also predictable. Because it sends an important message: a gay identity does not hinder a career. We must address the issue that individuals with same-sex sexual orientation are more vulnerable to financial crises because of workplace discrimination. Compared to heterosexuals, they have to face the problem of job insecurity, which makes their unemployment rate and poverty rate much higher than the average of the society. When one hears the words “LGBT” and “Homosexuality” it often conjures up a mental picture of people fighting for their rights, which were unjustly taken away or even the social emergence of gay culture in the world in the1980s and the discovery of AIDS. However, many people do not know that the history of LGBT people stretches as far back in humanity’s history, and continues in this day and age. Nevertheless, the LGBT community today faces much discrimination and adversity. Many think the problem lies within society itself, and often enough that may be the case. Society holds preconceptions and prejudice of the LGBT community, though not always due to actual hatred of the LGBT community, but rather through lack of knowledge and poor media portrayal.
Gay issues in the workplace need to be discussed, not circumvented. As an employee, I would reassure my coworkers that LGBT employees need to feel proud of who they are, not discouraged.
