Sexism is a very big topic with video games. People always make it so the girls have little to no clothes on. Almost never do they have the guys in video games like this. The guys will get some sweet looking gear and the girls get this little piece of fabric that barley covers the girl’s assets. Guys almost always get the main role in video games, some have where you can choose if you want to be a girl or guy but normally there are less options for the girls and you have to be close to naked. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a few games where the girl gets the lead, some examples are Metroid and Tomb Raider, but there are always games where the girls need saving and they can’t handle themselves. The men always have to go in and save them, …show more content…
They harass them, threaten their lives and stop at nothing to get what they want. Many females have had to live with this, they are scared to do what they love because of groups like this. Many females are often confined into their homes for safety not leaving for week. Most don’t go to their conventions because they are scared of what might happen. Some have been abused, other have been sexually assaulted. #GamerGate isn’t the only group like this, there are many other groups that are just as bad as this group. Anita Sarkeesian was forced to cancel a speech at a college because of a death threat against her. People were sending many treats and going into great detail about how they would do it. In the end the college told Sarkeesian that they couldn’t stop people with concealed carry. They even as far as making a game where they took turns attacking her. Zoe Quinn had the some kind of problems, she was harassed and disrespected, and gamers put stories about her sexual history, nude photos and talked about abusing her online. They said they wished she would just commit suicide (Dockterman, What …show more content…
Many developers have worked on making games less sexist. Nintendo has done a great job at this. The Legend of Zelda, and Mario Bros are two great examples. Both now have gotten better with having females being able to handle themselves. In Hyrule Warriors you can play from a large selection of characters, many of them are female. Even the villain is females. In Mario you can now play as Princess Peach in the main game, they have also added Birdo the female Yoshi, Toadette the female Toad, and Daisy, another princess. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time also got better about having the girl save the day, during the game you have Sheik come and save you, as the player at the time don’t know that Sheik is really Zelda on her own mission to save Hyrule. She saves you and then helps you on your own mission to save Hyrule, not Princess Zelda. Another great game is Mass Effect; you can pick to be either a boy or girl. It really makes no difference to the story line. The only difference it makes is a few minor changes, like it changes some characters so they you can have a relationship and that king of stuff. There is also the Fable series where it all started and you could only be a boy where now you can pick from male or female and no matter who you pick from you can be just as strong as the other and everyone is wearing decent clothing. The Borderlands series has also gotten better with this, in the first game you could only pick from three males
Sports, Violence and Alcohol - Three things considered to be in line with masculinity, Along with alot of things considered to be primal instinct. In america the prevalence and Sports, Violence and Beer exceeds most others leading to the general conclusion that America’s men are overall muscle bound meatheads who enjoy nothing but their primal urges. Clearly this is false but still an assumption made by those who only know these three things. As technology advances a new element of entertainment emerges, containing violence, sports and entertainment, Its videogames. Video Games muster together Guns, Violence, Sex, Alcohol, Sports and more Violence. From this description its easy to see why this would be a male oriented activity. At the time girls were still expected to be relatively lady-like. Yet as the years pass by, girls begin to play the video games which guys have been playing for years this causes a disparity between male and female gamers in the upcoming years.
In the 1930s and 40s, Adolf Hitler used the Jewish people as a scapegoat on which to blame Germany’s problems. This fear of what the Jewish people had apparently created granted the German people free reign to discriminate and detest. This hatred allowed the Nazi Regime to subsist and thrive. The same is true for The Party in 1984. The Party takes away the opportunity to expand one’s mind and freely use one’s body to one’s own pleasure, essentially taking away the humanity from human beings. In George Orwell’s 1984, The Party uses racism, sexism, and anti-semitism as a way to control the masses and quell rebellion.
This is because it is common for males to freely express their own fantasy that they lack in reality. In addition, they play video games to be their ideal self. If they were to play a female character, it would lean more towards the fact that it depicts what they want their dream girlfriend to look like. In Video Games and Gender by Michelle Zorrilla, video games have long been known as a male-dominated media. There would mostly be male characters than there are female characters because female characters are usually depicted as the subordinate character.
Gender roles are often used in our own society to tie people to a certain representation for what is socially acceptable. These roles perpetuate gender inequalities because they often make the female end of the spectrum worth less than the male. One example is equating masculinity with strength and femininity with weakness. Because of this sayings such as “You run like a girl” become negative. Gender roles create a system where people are set to a different standard based off gender alone. In trying to follow what is socially acceptable based on gender people are forced into roles. There is a lower percentage of women in science than men because girls are taught at a young age that being smart isn’t feminine. These roles harm boys too, teaching them that they have to be hyper-masculine to be considered
In our current culture, there is a huge difference between what is considered to be for girls or boys. From birth, children are told what colors and styles of clothing they wear, what toys they should play with, and how they should act. Often, girls are told they cannot play with toys considered to be for boys and boys are told they are not allowed to play with toys considered to be for girls. Children who do decide they want to play with the toys not traditionally for their gender are often scolded by family members, pushing the children back to their gender-specific toys. Gender socialization starts at birth and continues from adolescence, to adulthood, causing specific and detrimental differences
The discrimination of a person based on their sex has always been prevalent in society, and even though both genders can be affected by sexism, it is typically associated with females. Throughout history, women have been expected to avoid competing with men in regards to education, employment, politics, and the media.
Author and feminist Alix Kates Shulman said once: “Sexism goes so deep that at first it’s hard to see, you think it’s just reality” (McEneany). That quote sums up perfectly the way our society runs. There is no class teaching children how to act according the their gender. Yet little boys and little girls learn at a very young age what is expected of them. They get ideas about their gender roles from their parents, their school teachers and subconsciously from the toys they play with and the television shows they watch.
Dill, Karen E., and Kathryn P. Thill. "Video Game Characters and the Socialization of Gender Roles: Young People’s Perceptions Mirror Sexist Media Depictions." Sex Roles 57.11-12 (2007): 851-64. Print.
Sexism also occurs within the actual gaming population where a large, if not whole part of the female gamer population encounters sexist and indecent remarks at least once from the male gaming population.
Gender roles are unavoidable at any stage of your life. They are taught to you by parents, conveyed in the media, practiced and honored in organizations and supported by our government. No matter how many feminist groups attempt to bring the two sets of gender roles for males and females together, there will always be the unwritten expectations that males and females are taught. Boys will always play with guns and girls will always play with dolls. As long as this occurs, the ambitions for boys and girls will be directly related to the stereotypical form we are taught. It is up to the families, media and peers to use the gender roles appropriately.
Some scholars explain this shift in equality with the increase in female game developers (Lynch 2016). Though only at twenty-two percent, female developers continue to shine a light on the lack of female presence. This expanding audience and the prevalence of mobile gaming has fueled the diversity of
Milktea was not high up on some e-sports meritocracy totem; she was not the top performer in her game, but she still received attention because of her gender. Scarlett is still regarded as one of the most skillful female professionals in e-sports; her skill only brought more of that negative attention down on her as she was thrust into the limelight. In contrast, I could not find any substantial articles or journals detailing men being attacked for their gender. Men are the default in the world of video games; we women must accept that and move on, or challenge it by proving we have the skills. I needed to highlight that I have a minority experience when it comes to gaming; I have never been attacked, at least not since I was a child, for enjoying things that are considered a “manly” pastime. The common experience for women is hostility.
Gender roles are a completely overrated aspect of life through the eyes of society which govern the lives of others accordingly, making them live up to the standards of others. Gender inequality is something that has been going on for decades and, even though it hasn’t, is something that has been needed to get eliminated for years. My whole life I’ve been judged by members of my family because, to them, I do not act or dress how a young lady should. Trying to change people will often make them feel insecure and be unhappy with themselves because not all men and women are the same. Not all men are athletic & enjoy the outdoors just like not all girls like dressing up & playing with dolls. Societal standards aren’t fair to either gender and shouldn’t
However, the male gender distinctly has a larger variety of rights and opportunities in contradistinction to females. An example of this is, even in developed countries such as the UK, a gender pay gap of 15% exists with women on average earning £5,000 less a year than their male colleagues. The percentage of the gender pay gap is even greater for part-time jobs, going up to 35%. There can be no acceptable justification for this as your gender should not determine how much you get paid for a job. Women are being paid less for working efficiently for the same hours simply because they are women. Your gender defines you biologically, some may say emotionally (which again is an overlooked issue of gender inequality) but in no way does it determine how competent you are at a job. Without a doubt, there are males in a workplace who lack sufficient amount of knowledge and skill to be in the position they are currently at but are simply handed that position for the reason that their opposition is a female. In many cases, jobs which require similar skills, experiences and qualifications, pay workers less if dominated by women rather than men since men are seen as being more efficient than women for physical tasks. This shows again how a human’s gender brews up unfair
It will be one of the luckiest things in the world if people could just do what they love in their careers, and pursue their dreams without any fears or worries about how society and others judge them. However, women in this society do not obtain the same rights that men own; many inequalities hinder women to live and work. From this class, I learned a lot about gender affects work, and women and men’ roles can be very different in the work. In many industries, even though women get same education and professional degrees as men do, they are hired at lower rates than men are. Many women meet glass ceilings and find it is hard to attain the highest status in the profession, and this causes the society locks women out of higher level
