Sexism In Today's Fast Pace Culture

In today’s fast pace culture, it is easily looked over that the media is everywhere and it has a very big impact on us especially those living in the United States. There are so many different forms of media. There’s the obvious social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but there are also other forms of media that surround us every day. Televised news, magazines, television shows (of all genres), music and movies are all forms of media that are all around us and influence us, whether we believe it or not. A hot topic in today’s day and age is sexism. When I hear sexism I think of the gender stereotypes and negative connotations that go along with the different genders in the media. Such connotations could include how single women are portrayed as needy and always looking for a man to provide for them and take care of them, or how single men are nymphomaniacs who are always looking to score with as many women as possible. Now a lot of Americans “turn the other cheek” when it comes to these situations. They don’t believe that TV, movies, music, and other media sources, have an impact on how we view ourselves or how we should act and what kinds of things each gender should like and do. Most commonly known are the rap lyrics calling women “hoes, bi*ches, sl*ts,” and other derogatory names, and there’s plenty more examples of sexism that stretch out further than just the lyrics. Examples could be the fiasco between Ke$ha and Dr. Luke. For those that don’t know singer/songwriter “Ke$ha sued producer Dr. Luke, seeking to void all their contracts because of how, the suit claimed, Dr. Luke “sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused [Kesha] to the point where [she] nearly lost her life.”” (Rolling Stone).
