The journal “Why employees love staying at Marriott” of Gallagher, has mentioned many reasons how partners love to work at Marriott (Gallagher, 2015). One great example is that each member of the company has realized they are parts of the family, and therefore, reacts beyond the success of whole family, which is Marriott International Inc. Moreover, the Marriott leader’s philosophy of knowing producing best service from treating well employees has successfully absorbed in its culture, so employees know that they will receive best care as they could while working in this company. Moreover, Marriott constantly offer jobs for visual impaired job seekers who are wishing to have a job and it is about 6% on the total employees that Marriott possess (Zamora, 2002). The different strategy that Starbucks applies on their employees is to act rather than words. Starbucks has gained its own reputation from the public by being an active member of many non-profit and social organizations which are working for the interest of community. Moreover, Starbucks also satisfies employees and cares about them by applies some smart and good strategies such as free education at ASU for its partners. This campaign has gained the acceptance of many employees in the company. In
Servant leadership, as defined by Kretiner and Kinkicki (2015, p.486), is putting the needs of others, including employees, customers, and community ahead of one’s own needs. This management style requires selflessness and humility from management so the organization can focus on serving key stakeholders. There are ten characteristics of a servant-leader as identified in the text
The Servant Leader discusses the importance of leaders who adopt a service oriented attitude in which they care for the needs of others before their own. A servant leader need not be an actual servant or have ever been a servant to become a servant leader. Rather, a servant leader is born with or adopts an “others first” disposition. Climbing through the ranks may help to create a servant leader, though it is not necessary. When leaders choose to see that the needs of their followers or their organizations are the highest priority they become servants.
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that augments the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and creates a more just and caring world, they put the team first, and themselves second (MindTools, 2015). Servant leaders are able to demonstrate their traits through interaction with followers and other leaders within the organization. The characteristics of servant leaders include their commitment to the growth of people, stewardship, and building community, and provide leaders with the opportunity to experience change and to invite followers to change (Savage-Austin & Honeycutt 2011). Servant leadership encourages leaders and followers to ‘raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality’, and set their leadership focus: follower’s first, organizations second, their own needs last (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008). The servant leader focuses on the needs of others to include team members.

Over this past semester, VUSM 101 Leading by Serving has taught me about many values. These values include Franciscan Values, Viterbo Values, Servant Leadership, and my own Personal Values. This class also taught me that each person has their own values and those values are what make you unique. These values also influence what gifts a person has. I have discovered that by evaluating my core values, I am able to interpret the gifts that I have received from God and how I will be able to use those gifts throughout my life.
One of the leading organizations that follow the servant leadership style is the coffee giant, Starbucks. The basis of the company’s organizational culture is the servant leadership principles. These principles pervade every aspect of their business. The company believes in caring their employees first, as they are the one who takes care of the customers (Ferguson, 2015). The hiring and management of the staff, the way the staff work and interact with one another, serving the customers all represent the organizational culture, their policies, and operations.
By ensuring that the initial as well as subsequent contact with the employee aligns to the mission and vision statement of the Ritz, it becomes possible to train and guide the employee to take up the culture expected of the firm’s employees (Connie 1995). Leading by example is a phenomenon that further helps the Ritz live up to its expectations in terms of service delivery and customer satisfaction. This is simply because the Ritz presents a workplace where learning is a continuous process. The fact that the chief executive can take his time to induct employees and even show them “how it is done” is the best system to use when creating the value of leadership in employees. The system at the Ritz seeks to create some form of autonomy in terms of decision making by the employees through provision of leeway allowing employees to make some decisions in a bid to satisfy the unique needs of the guests. The motto, “ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen” presents a mantra that has the effect of appreciating the employees as much as the most valuable guests (Joseph 2008). This mantra underpins the performance associated with each employee and the eventual culmination in the importance of the employee population to the realization of success as well as the satisfaction of the guests of the
Many people want to attain and hold influential positions in society whether it would be in the field of science, politics, education, or in public service. However, many people tend to forget how servitude is one of the main life highways to travel in order to arrive at that successful destination called “Leadership.” Nevertheless, there was one man who knew how powerful the concept of servitude was in order to grasp the reigns of successful leadership. Socrates was a phenomenal philosopher, scholar, teacher, and servant. Socrates leadership style was unique in regards to letting students communicate among one another in an articulate theological reasoning process by questioning and probing at one’s belief system in order to seek self-purification.
As a health care professional who provides direct patient care on a daily basis and also as a charge nurse who leads a team of professional caregivers, I identify myself as a leader who follows the Servant Leadership principles. Choosing the servant leadership style has been influenced by my upbringing as a Christian and also a devoted follower of Christ and the teachings of the Bible. Even though the servant leadership principles have been in existence for thousands of years, it was made popular in the modern times by Robert K. Greenleaf through his essay “The Servant as a Leader”. Many traditional and contemporary organizations have adopted the Servant leadership principles either as a whole or part and have been successful. The cornerstone
One significant challenge to the hospitality industry is Leadership. Leadership is the key to the success or failure of every department, office or industry (Anonymous, 2011). It affects the hospitality management in the industry. Although the management and leadership are used interchangeably, they are not the same. It is a significant quality in the success of the hospitality sector. Many employees in the industry are not leaders, and this compromises their effectiveness in the market. The shortage in leadership quality is putting the hospitality industry in a downhill to collapse. To curb this, majority of the hiring managers are seeking applicants who demonstrate the ability to shift from one role to another based on the necessity of the environment (Chung-Herrera, 2003).
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. Servant Leadership means to serve others and to lead. It puts everyone else first teaching to put others before yourself, with this leading qualities emerge. Just being or having leadership qualities doesn’t always work. Most leadership models show possessive towards the better for themselves, some work out while others don’t, mostly I think because the unwillingness to see others before yourself is a hard concept for some to understand and use. You can be a great leader but if you don’t understand servant qualities or serve for the benefit of others your probley not much liked. Most I don’t think know what Servant Leadership is or means, I didn’t until this course opened it up to me.
