Self-Reflection of this Year
My college writing profession started when I was in my freshman year. I have always had a difficulty with writing at a college level, but I am willing to learn. Prior to coming to Penta, I was homeschooled since the fourth grade. When I started my freshmen year, I had a college writing professor as a tutor. I achieved a majority of my college writing knowledge from my tutor over the course of two years. My writing was at a passable level, but I wanted to reach a higher step in my academic writing. I decided to take Bowling Green’s college writing course this year to gather the skills desired for me to move on. Over the time I have been writing in this class, I have realized the level of improvement in my critical thinking. I have been able to take topics from papers and twist them in a completely different way. I have learned the different ways I can logically refute or improve my own work and others. The skills I have acquired through critical thinking translate very well to making a solid counter argument. For every paper I have written in this class has always had one crucial opposite point of view to state. I believe that GSW 1110 has supported me through my decisive argument building. The “Analysing a Visual Argument” paper that was due played a major part in how I built counterarguments. The paper was about dissecting a highly controversial work of art based on what the picture speaks to you. The picture in question has multiple viewpoints that I had to address.
By writing a counterargument, I am also guiding the audience to my final conclusion based on opposing views of the genre. This semester has been a personal exercise for me to improve the way I perceive my audience and
