Imagine harming yourself with sharp objects, causing yourself pain, or taking your own life through suicide. Some individuals relieve their feelings of anger or frustration through violent actions. Sociologists and researchers have many questions asking why individuals would choose to inflict self-pain and suffering. Cutting, burning, and suicide are some of the self-injuries that individuals have used in an attempt to relieve their intense emotional frustrations. Those, who attempt self-injuries have been reported to experience a feeling of calm and peace during these self-harming actions. Finding settings can be difficult for self-injurers because they seek to separate the setting from home or social structures. These feelings make it challenging on the individual to understand their placement in the family and cause the individual to feel overwhelmed with their emotions. This could lead the self-injurer to self-harming practices or actions. Many schools or adults concerned with the child’s behavior blame the parents for the child’s self-injury actions. When parents ignore the child’s cutting, the hope is that the child outgrows the unwanted behavior. The child is unable to communicate or express themselves because of feelings of unimportance or significance. Adults should recognize the warning signs of emotional issues in young people before these issues lead to unwanted deviant behaviors such as cutting. Self-injury can be prevented in many ways by parents and teachers. Suicide attempts can be overlooked, it can be defined differently based upon beliefs or feelings. Suicide attempts are actions and instant behaviors that takes one’s life. Some people regard suicide attempts as murder. Today, suicides are a leading cause of youth deaths. These attempts of suicide can be prevented. Thio, Taylor, and Schwartz state “about 31,000 American die by their own hand every year. Furthermore there are far more individuals likely to kill themselves by the fact that the U.S. suicide rate is nearly twice as high as the homicide rate.” (Thio et al, 2013, p. 144). There are several reasons why one may attempt to commit suicide. Individuals, may exhibit severe depression or mental anxiety. Depression is the number one leading cause for suicide and suicide attempts. It can be challenging to identify those suffering from depression and recognizing those at risk of self-harm. Those who commit suicide have demonstrated three different approaches which include; threatening, attempting, and committing suicide. Individuals who threaten suicide are often vocal with their intended action to end their life. Thio, Taylor, and Schwartz state “these individuals clearly want to live rather than die, since their suicide threats are intended as a means of achieving some objective in life” (Thio et al, 2013, p. 145).
