What is self-harm? Self harm happens when you hurt or harm yourself. There are many ways to do so. Some include overdose, cutting yourself ,burning yourself , banging your head against a wall or something else hard, punching yourself, sticking things in your body. and swallowing things such as nails or other sharp objects. The most common form of self-harm is cutting . Some people who self harm have planned it out in advance, others it just happens in the state of mind. There are multiple places people may self-harm. The most common is on the wrists, but others include on the legs, stomach, and even on their upper arms. How common is self-harm? Self-injury is common in children between the ages of 13-17, but it has occurred as young as 7. One in every ten kids will self-harm at some point. Even though its most common in teens, it can still happen at any age. It is estimated that about two million people in the U.S. self harm. Most teenagers or young adults with women outnumbering the men. They are of all races. In recent study, over 4000 self-harming adults are hospitalized per year. 80% of those hospitalized had overdosed and 15% were hospitalized for cutting. Who self-harms? Self harm occurs most often in young women, along with veterans of the armed forces, gay, lesbian, or people that are bisexual, and people that have been physical, emotional or sexual abuse during their childhood. Most often, the cause of people self harming is depression, PTSD, or others serious medical conditions. These people feel like they are going nowhere in life and that they cannot find any relief, so they cut them self. Cutting may seem pointless to some, but to these people who self harm, its not, its what keeps them alive.
