This paper’s purpose is to exhibit my understanding of adolescents and how their self-esteem/self-concept, play a role in their educational development. As adolescents progress through middle and high school, forming an opinion of oneself can be a difficult task to accomplish. What self-esteem means is the appraisal of or attitude toward the self (Wagner & Ludtke, 2013). Adolescents are trying to identify if they like who they are, if they are confident in this person, a lot of personal turbulence can occur for the individual. Wagner and Ludtke also stated that in early adolescence there is a consistent decrease in self-esteem. One of the many reasons for this is the increasing realistic self-views, and the general focus on negative feedback rather than positive feedback. It is our jobs as teachers to guide our students in the right direction of helping them overcome any doubts they have of themselves. In a sense we must use what we know to help them find the confidence to realize that each and every student is an individual and are special in their own way. So in this paper, through research and my own ideas I would like to present how I would go about these scenarios as a future educator.
It is crucial to reassure every student that they are more than just a pupil in the classroom. Each and every student has something special to offer. However, for a student who is suffering from low self-esteem, it may be difficult for them to feel confident or comfortable in speaking their opinion or idea. In some of the activities that I conjured up, I believe these would be useful tools in the future for these students. Simply because it will give them the opportunity to sympathize with others, and try and understand the situation of someone who may be struggling, and be able to lend a helping hand. I also will make it a personal and professional goal to make sure that I attend conferences that are strictly talking about adolescents and self-esteem, and how to battle the difficulties these individuals face. I want to know that as their teacher, I was able to give them the foundation to build onto their own growing self-esteem, but I was also able to give them an insight into helping others around them and being a foundation for their peers.

The question of whether self- esteem has significance with real world- consequences is a valid concern. Ulrich Orth and Richard W. Robins provide the answer, with evidence contributed by researched studies, in their article The Development of Self- Esteem that self- esteem, in fact, does influence societal significance. With the determination on self- esteem trajectory from adolescence to old age, self- esteem stability, and the relationship between levels of self-esteem and predictions of success and failure, one can conclude that self- esteem influences life outcomes; moreover, people can participate to involvements focused at positively influencing the development of self- esteem.

In order for our lives to be content and effective, we must learn to open up and interact with others so that we can discover who we are and who we are to become. Today, there are many teens who have low self-esteem due to their appearance or timidity. They do not realize that there are chances of being accepted by others and judged by their inner body instead of the outward appearance once they start participating. Though Charlie had the same feeling as these teens at the beginning of his freshmen year, his active participation in life leads him to feeling infinite and grateful without any sensation of terror.

Self-esteem touches everything about a person’s belief about himself and his emotional state. One’s belief can be positive e.g. I love myself, I am a great person. On the other hand, it can be negative e.g. I am useless or I am too fat. Furthermore, emotional state include shame, pride, joy, despair etc.
In the depths of an individual’s being, lies his or her self-worth. Self-worth molds individuals into who they are, what they want to become. Self-worth lies at the heart of self-esteem. Self-esteem is, Palladino (1994) a blend of “self-confidence, self-worth, and self-respect. It involves respecting others, [along with] feeling a sense of harmony and peace within yourself” (sec.1p.1). The secret to higher self-esteem is the incentive to take accountability for one’s viewpoints, such as his or her aspirations, ethics, capabilities, and curiosities and to understand that these things combined is what makes them who they are (Palladino, 1994). However, the quest of higher self-esteem at times will cause sacrifices to be made by the individual to education, relationships, self-regulation, mental and physical health, as well as other concerns (Crocker & Knight, 2005).
After reviewing both studies it can be concluded that an individual’s self-esteem changes based on their relationship status, ethnicity, personality characteristics and a possible effect on gender. Individuals that have high self-esteem are usually individuals that are outgoing, energetic and easy going. Those individuals have a lot of friends and are sociable. Adolescence self –esteem can be based on how popular they are in school those adolescences that are popular will have a higher self-esteem opposed to the adolescence that are more reserved, and that do not have many friends. Individual’s self- esteem can change during their twenties and sometimes into their thirties and beyond.
Self-esteem can be defined as how children feel about themselves. Children's levels of self-esteem are evident in their behavior and attitudes. If children feel good about themselves, these good feelings will be reflected in how they relate to friends, teachers, siblings, parents, and others. Self-esteem is something that affects individuals throughout life. Therefore, it is very important for parents to help their children develop healthy levels of self-esteem. There are many things parents can do to help their children learn that they are lovable, capable, and competent, beginning when their children are at a very young age. Unfortunately, it is also at a very young age that children can begin to develop low self-esteem. Parents must be very careful not to plant the seeds of low self-esteem in their children unknowingly. Self-esteem is a personality trait that describes a person’s stable overall perception of personal value or self-worth. This is essential to human growth as it affects relationships, a person’s ability to work, and nearly all parts of life. Children’s development of positive self-esteem is extremely important as it allows for character building such as giving the child the chance to improve on mistakes without fearing rejection from peers. Parents have an extensive role in developing children’s self-esteem due to the limited number of outside factors that could affect a child’s opinions and self-evaluation. Self-esteem is the amount of worth one has for oneself, so it could possibly affect a student’s academic success if that student lacks confidence in his or her own abilities. How can academic success be measured? An accurate representation of a student’s academic success is the student’s current grade point average (GPA). If a student’s grade point average and self-esteem show a positive correlation, then self-esteem could be a possible indicator of academic success. She seemed much more hesitant to describe herself, however, she was more than willing to talk about her peer groups. Juliana’s responses constructed several theories that have been discussed in class, based on peer groups: family, school climate and achievement, and gender. When asked how she would describe herself she said, “I like to think of myself as a gentle and caring person”. This seemly short and simple response is actually quite intuitive to the way that adolescents think. During adolescence many cognitive transitions occur; one of them is an adolescent’s ability to think in multiple dimensions. Children often describe themselves based on physical characteristics while adolescents describe themselves by physical and personality traits. Therefore, although Juliana only used two characteristics to describe herself, they were both related to her personality, thus showing her cognitive developments as an adolescent. In accordance with studies of adolescents’ peer relations, Juliana defines her peer group as people she spends time with based on common interests. She considers the classmates in her honors classes to be her peer group. This group plays an important role in the adolescent’s identity development as it is considered a reference group, or a group against which an individual compares himself or herself.
