Nevan Mitrovic Kaitlyn Selman CJS 215 Infographic Outline. The school-to-prison pipeline is a systemic issue that is rooted in our society's educational systems. The pipeline is shaped by policies and practices that cause marginalized students to interact with the criminal justice system. This infographic will explain the historical origins, mechanisms, prevalence, global context, intersectionality, debates, efforts to reform, and the overall significance of combatting the school-to-prison pipeline. By understanding the different components that cause the pipeline, we can begin to fight the negative effects it causes. In an article about the Ontario Safe Schools Act, Kovalenko explores the similarities of our two systems and says, “in the Canadian context the absence of statistics on race and the inaccessibility to statistics on disability make it impossible to determine with any certainty whether the application of discipline policies in Canadian schools is having a disproportionate impact on the racial minority students and students with disabilities. However, there is empirical evidence based on qualitative data analysis – either through self-report surveys or interviews with the students, their parents, communities, and educational system workers – that point in that direction” (Kovalenko). Sofiya points out how discipline policies in Canadian schools exist, however they lack thorough evidence to blame the policy for its effects. However, the qualitative data she gathered shows how the policy connects to its negative consequences. While they may not have enough evidence, we see how similar policies produce similar effects. The school-to-prison pipeline affects individuals differently depending on their identities. When we look at how race, class, gender, ability, and sexuality intersect, we see how discrimination adds up, leading students to be disproportionately disciplined and increasing
