The Wonderful World of Scentsy The five senses are hearing, touching, seeing, smelling, and tasting. These five senses trigger memories of feelings and emotions. Recently, I have discovered the wonderful products of Scentsy, where I find myself in bliss when I imagine my favorite products and scents. Scentsy has been around for nearly ten years and was created by the Thompson Family. Their mission was to bring value to others by owning a family-friendly business. The products that Scentsy sells are very artistic, beautiful, creative, and are of high-quality products that, “Warm the Heart, Enliven the Senses, and Inspire the Soul.” With that said, their products stimulate the use of all five senses. I remember when I first came across the Scentsy products, they were all so appealing and captivating, and loaded with various colors and styles. I literally thought that I was in heaven when I took the first whiff of my favorite scent, Beach (the aroma of papaya and honeydew melon that has been sweetened with a hint of coconut). I have many other best-loved scents that relax me and make me forget about all of my worries and surroundings. Viewing the glowing light that shimmers off the warmers is one of the key elements that can relax the soul, because it’s truly an admirable sight to see. Its ease of use, low temperature to the touch, and minimal electrical use prevent safety hazards and high costs. The feeling that is acquired from the shining light; the beautiful, enticing aromas that one can practically taste; the peace and quiet one rarely ever hears; and the familiar scent that reminds one of home could cause the feeling of relaxation to one who normally lacks

In Lynda Barry’s Common Scents, she considers scents a demon for many reasons. One reason being that everyone has his or her own scent preference and scent in general, yet we also judge the way that other people smell. When the woman whose house smelled like a fresh bus bathroom talking about the smells of different Asian people’s houses, Lynda notes that she was “free with her observations about the smells of others” (18). She sprays her house with disinfectant sprays and air fresheners, which to her smells better that whatever her house smelt like before, but to others, such as Lynda’s grandmother, these smells are too strong and are trying to hide the fact that not everything smells good all the time.

When Divakaruni moved to the United States, tried to abandon the smells of her childhood in favor of acculturation. She realized this is a mistake when she has a child of her own. She eventually comes to appreciate the smells’ abilities to comfort, give joy, and motivate. One smell in particular she told about is how the smell of iodine reminded her that “love sometimes hurts while it’s doing its job.” In rearing her own offspring, she intentionally tried to replicate the “smell technique” with her own twist in hopes that her children reap similar benefits. Cultures are becoming obsessed with pumpkin spice flavors because it’s just a good flavor. Other reasons why people are obsessed because it’s a newer thing. I really don’t know why everybody likes it I guess just because it’s good. I mean how could you pass up a pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin spice Pringles, pumpkin spice doughnuts or anything like that. People also like pumpkin spice latte because it’s caffeine. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is a coffee drink made with a mix of traditional fall spice flavors.

Scent is part of the five senses that are developed when an infant is still in the mother’s womb. It is processed by a part of the brain that correlates with memory, so at a young age an infant could differentiate who their mother is by scent. Odor is a sign and olfactory condition (Waskul & Vannini, 2008). As someone gets older they begin to develop scents they like and dislike. There are also scents that people find attractive and unattractive. When meeting another individual for the first time a human’s first instinct is to smell them without realizing it. For instance, have you ever sat by someone or hugged someone who smelled good or bad? If so, many people tend to associate the scent with attractiveness or unattractiveness depending on the level of smell. There have been many studies indicating that there is a strong correlation between odor and attractiveness. Although the scent is a universal and an undetectable smell it can influence the level of perceived attractiveness of another person.

In Patrick Süskind’s Perfume: The Story of a Murderer the motif of scent and smell plays a huge role in the plot development of the novel; perhaps, it is the primary driving force behind it. Throughout the book, this motif is woven through the text as its own separate entity that pertains to the essential theme of the novel: olfaction. Süskind’s placement of the enhancement of smell brings Grenouille closer to the readers for the very fact that he is dehumanized by it. The technique of the author in using this motif is graceful in a manner that its presence does not display redundancy; rather it causes the reader to yearn each time it is shown for how the motif ties into the story holistically.

Scent within the novel Perfume by Patrick Suskind has been regarded as a supernatural element that transcends the physical realm and into the spiritual. In 18th Century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with the supernatural ability to smell, while lacking his own individual odour. The power of scent is revealed to have manipulative qualities that shape the way an individual perceives someone based off odour. Suskind uses the characters of Grenouille and Madame Gaillard to convey the effect that scent has on the emotional spirituality of humans as both have a disability with their olfactory sense. Grenouille utilises the power of scent to create his own perfume which emphasizes scent possessing qualities beyond the natural world.
The novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Süskind takes place in the densely populated and repugnant slums of 18th century Paris where protagonist Jean-Baptiste Grenouille resides as a lowly peasant with an incomparable sense of smell that sets him apart from the rest of the world. However, Grenouille is unaffected, and endures the hardships of brutal peasant life with an iron will, in the hopes of discovering every scent the world had to offer as his only motivation for living. He craves to be alone to further enhance his knowledge in capturing scent; Grenouille becomes so estranged and enthralled in the art of capturing fragrances that he sets out on a quest to concoct the “ultimate perfume” which leads him to commit a series of murders to capture human scent. Süskind, by way of Jean Baptiste’s obscure life and fine nose allows readers to explore the concept of alienation and the effects it has on the character development of Jean Baptiste Grenouille.
