Saul Bass, a graphic designer and filmmaker, was acclaimed for his film posters’ and title sequences’ designs. His career was 40 years old and in that tenure, he worked with Hollywood’s best filmmakers like Otto Preminger, Martin Scorsese, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Billy Wilder. Although the work with Otto Preminger was what got to be best known in the film industry The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955. Bass’s work in title sequences proved to be effective and memorable, bringing into light a new kind of kinetic typography. His work North by Northwest, Vertigo and Psycho really proved to be the winners. His designing of the corporate logos were also very iconic. His best works were the innovative AT&T “bell” logo (1969) and the
“globe” logo for the same company in 1983. Two of the most recognized logos from that era, designed by Bass, were Continental Airlines’ “Jetstream” logo in 1968 and United Airlines’ “tulip” logo in 1974. In 1960, Saul Bass fell in love and married a director and a producer he worked with from last 5 years, Elaine Makatura. She came to work with him in 1955, she directed and produced, with him, the title sequence of Spartacus. Soon after the opening of this very title sequence, they got married. After this, Saul Bass preferred working with this talented woman he chose as his life partner. After birth of their two kids, Jennifer (1964) and Jeffrey (1967), their time concentrated more on their family and to a little less extent than before, to the short films and title sequences. Joint ventures that they had in the short films were World Fair in 1964, Here to There for United Airlines and The Searching Eye for Eastman Kodak. Why Man Creates, a short film they made in 1968, won an Oscar. From the middle of the 1960 to the end of 1980, Saul and Elaine moved away from main titles and put their complete focus on their children. About the end of his career, James L. Brooks and Martin Scorsese commended the return of the Basses to main title design. They created their last title sequences for Scorsese; Goodfellas, Cape Fear, The Age of innocence and Casino. Basses’ work has been a legacy for all modern-day opening title sequences that bring out the theme and the mood of the film.
The films of Alfred Hitchcock provide some of the best evidence in favor of the auteur theory. Hitchcock uses many techniques that act as signatures on his films, enabling the viewer to possess an understanding of any Hitchcock film before watching it. His most famous signature is his cameo appearance in each of his films, but Hitchcock also uses more technical signatures like doubling, visual contrast, and strategically placed music to create suspense.
Benny Andrews was also inspired by the jazz clubs of Chicago and his work as a civilizing activist. He served as the Director of the Visual Art Program at the National Endowment for the Arts. Recognized for his collage works as well as carving, graphic, drawings, paintings, he is also a writer and critic and was a professor at Queens College in New York. Andrews is an outstanding designer, who is straightforward, but his powerful work is also unremarkable. Alfred Hitchcock, one of the greatest directors of all time, has a particularly unique style in the way he creates his films. Film analyzers classify his distinctive style as the “Alfred Hitchcock signature”. Hitchcock’s signatures vary from his cameo appearances to his portrayal of a specific character. Two perfect examples of how Hitchcock implements his infamous “signatures” are in the movies, A Shadow of a Doubt and Vertigo. In these movies, numerous examples show how Hitchcock exclusively develops his imagination in his films.

If there is one thing everyone can notice about films is the achievement in style and directing. The three directors talked about in this paper are the most successful at delivering a breathtaking style and direction to their films. Baz Luhrmann, Wes Anderson, and Martin Scorsese have produced and directed films over decades and each film as impacted not only the United States but worldwide. With the unmistakable trademarks that each director has, it is very easy to feel sucked into the world in which they are shaping around you and the story. John Ford was an American motion-picture director. Winner of four Academy Awards, and is known as one of America’s great film directors. He began his career in the film industry around 1913. According to Ellis, Ford’s style is evident in both the themes he is drawn toward and the visual treatment of those themes, in his direction of the camera and in what’s in front of it. Although he began his career in the silent film area and continued to work fruitfully for decades after the thirties, Ford reached creative maturity in the thirties. Ford, unlike other directors continued to do some of his finest work after the nineteen thirties. Music and literature are constantly evolving with each new release, but how ground breaking are these pieces compared to its contemporaries? Miles Davis and Jorge Luis Borges have contemplated and answered this question frequently. Rather than add on to a previous style, these two took the future of their genres into their own hands. In Davis’s “Kind of Blue” as well as Borges’s “The Garden of Forking Paths,” old ideas are completely abandoned and new, inventive styles flourish. Not only do these two play with the content of their work, but they also explore different styles and means of composition.
