Burn the Burden Another day of school flies by and you're about to head home for a relaxing school-free weekend, and then the most treacherous words of your teacher's mouth fall out like George Washington’s teeth, “Oh and here’s your weekend homework due Monday.” This is just another time I can’t bear to be in school. I’m not being excessive, I’m stating facts. Out of experience I know the struggles of late nights, less time spent with my family, and constant stress that teachers give as though they were the devil asking for murder. Any of my student readers here know of a constant nightmare we can’t escape. Hopefully no one will want that for a young, growing child. Homework for a growing mind causes stress, takes away their personal free …show more content…
Most parents send their kids to public school for a free education, but instead they’re usually infested with the uncultured nature of homework. Why should students be doing homework when we could be reviewing for a test or quiz or even performing our extraordinary talents? I have to stay up late almost every night because of school when I’m doing homework. Sometimes my talent is deprived of me just because of a stupid useless piece of paper. On the University of the People blog, they further explain my point in perfect detail, “School is already a full-time job for students, as they generally spend over 6 hours each day in class. Students also often have extracurricular activities such as sports, music, or art that are just as important as their traditional courses. Adding extra hours to all of these demands is a lot for children to manage, and prevents students from having extra time to themselves for a variety of creative endeavors. Homework prevents self-discovery and having the time to learn new skills outside of the school …show more content…
To finish stating my ideas, I would like to commit to saying homework is a permanent burden. I will forever have dark circles under my eyes from all the early mornings since kindergarten. Tears come to me almost everyday from school and the stress it causes. Homework is an area of additional work that doesn’t even benefit us in any way, yet we’re still being tortured and tormented by it. Everything school costs is sometimes not even worth the pain I receive. I will never forget all I have been through with the struggles and stress, and constant emotional breakdowns that waste all my tears. From the The Vitruvian Post, it clearly continues my point, “Researchers found that students who do more than 3 hours of homework every day not only experience more stress, but also physical health problems, alienation from society, and a lack of balance in their life.” My family was organized and had an actual bedtime schedule when I was younger, but then homework fell in and I went to bed around 11pm to 12 am every night. No where in the Bible does it state homework is something meaningful to life, but I’ll tell you this, God is here to save us by giving me the ability to write like
A article by Annie Murphy Paul called The ´´Trouble With Homework´´ talks about how homework is like a double shift for High School, Middle School, or College School students as their first shift is 7-9 hours in school per day. The trouble with homework is that students have other things to do after school like sports, hobbies, or a job that they have to attend to after school. Some students also want to just relax after school and have a good time with friends or family and homework is affecting them because they always worry about it and can't do things they want to because they have to finish it. One mother said ´´School for [my son] is work´´ as she is referring that when her son comes home he has to work another 1-5 on his homework and
More than 70 percent of students have said that they have stress caused by homework
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. There can’t be homework assigned just for busy work, that becomes a waste of time. The homework needs to be assigned as a thoughtful way to engage students, so they know what is being
Homework is just busy workand, that we get after school hours by the time we are finished we are ready for bed to start the routine again. We get all this work and we can’t even do what we want because we have all this work after school to get finished before the next day .Go on the wedsite and read why there is no pont of homework http://www.trentinternational.org/reasons-why-homework-should-be-banned-at-schools.
This is what goes through the head of a teenage girl after a tough day at school. Teachers are giving out assignments left and right and she doesn’t know what to do. She is already working hard trying to do a sport, maintain a part-time job, care for her household, and have fun with the little time she has to herself. She says homework just adds to her stress and she doesn’t think she can keep this up any more. Although it may seem harmless, too much homework can affect a student’s performance in school, cause depression and anxiety, it gives teachers more work, and to a certain extent, it isn’t necessary.
Homework is for suckers. Homework causes stress for students as well as for parents. Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Homework is nothing more than a scapegoat for teachers so that they can pawn off their due responsibilities on parents and students. Homework should be banned for students Kindergarten through 8th grade because the negative effects do not out weight the benefits that come from homework.
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
“Homework is dumb. Homework takes too much time. What’s the point of all of this homework?” This is the thought of many students today whenever it comes to doing homework. Many of them complain that they have jobs that may interfere with homework. Some of them use sports as a reason to get out of doing their homework, but several teachers offer time in class, and early morning tutoring for those students who are struggling or may not have time to do assignments away from school. Although many students feel it is unnecessary and a waste of time, homework can be very beneficial to these students whenever it comes to review or test taking times.
“TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE; too easy or too hard; a spur to student achievement or student alienation; a marker of enlightened or lazy teaching; a builder of character or a degrader of self-esteem; too demanding or too dismissive of parents; a stimulus of national economic vigor or of behavioral conformity” (Gill & Schlossman, 2004). I can only imagine so many hear all of these complaints about homework each and every day ranging from teachers, parents, students and anyone connected to the educational system. Most likely there’s no perfect answer to homework problems. However, there has to be a better way than what students are dealing with on a daily basis currently.
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Here are a few examples: building character, promoting self-discipline, or teaching good work habits. All teachers who assign homework want to believe that the gain outweighs the pain. Although, there is no evidence of that and they must rely on faith (“Homework: No Proven Benefits”, pg. 1). Michellea, a mother of a middle school student, says that some work can reinforce certain skills, but hours of homework are unhealthy and unproductive. Mominseattle agrees. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep. With busy families, like hers, they have many after school activities, so when they get home, they do not have time for too much homework. She says ...
To begin to understand why homework has become such a current issue, one must first understand the origin of this debate. The article “The Homework Debate” explains, “Throughout the first few decades of the 20th century, educators commonly believed that homework helped create disciplined minds” (Marzano). In continuation, the article then discusses how this view flip-flopped throughout the rest of the 20th century. Starting in 1940, those views suddenly began to change when homework began to interfere with household chores and activities. Merely ten years later when the Soviet’s launched Sputnik, American educators began to fear that our education system was lacking and more rigorous homework was assigned. Views on homework then switched again in 1980, when many theorists became concerned about homework negatively influencing children’s mental health (Marzano). Since this time, our education system has refused to pick a stance and continues to have educators that wrangle for both sides.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
Students have been doing homework for centuries, and still continue, ranging to different subjects. Homework are the assignments given by teachers and are expected for the student to complete after school. Reason being because the teacher wants to understand content, practice, or its to give out busy work to the student. Yet people are two sided about this topic, arguing that homework needs to be given out to students or not. Parents and teachers need to comprehend the principle of homework and how it supposed to function in addition to comprehend how the work is affecting the students; this controversial topics need to be considered more in order to adjust the situation that is occurring now.
