In Yojimbo (Kurosawa, 1961), Sanjuro’s character arc primarily revolves around his mysterious nature as a quintessential no-name character. The audience first knows nothing about Sanjuro and his motives and has to learn more about him through his interactions with the other characters in the town. When he arrives at the desolate town overrun by rival gangs by the guidance of a toss of a stick, the audience is not quite sure what his purpose is to be there, only knowing that he stumbled upon the place by chance.
