Description of Event: As a RN Clinical Supervisor, I had to do interviews for nursing staff and other healthcare personnel. I often had to informed them that their attire was not appropriate to wear at an interview or to a patient’s home. Don’t get me wrong, I said it in a nice way and I always waited until the end of interview. I waited until the end of the interview because I wanted to see how they respond to my questions. There was a time when an applicant appeared to the interview with nose piercing, that look like a ring that is in a bull’s nose. To my surprise, her answers to my questions was right on point. I know that I could have just not hired the applicant and kept quiet, but if it was me I would welcome the advice. I would
I plan to pursue a career in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This career take many steps to complete. But it is different routes you can take and different programs you can enroll in for this profession. Family Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication and diagnose patients and give treatment. They can work either in hospitals and or clinics as a primary healthcare provider. They can also order specific x-rays and test that need to be done for a patient. The nurse practitioners interact with less patients in a clinic than in a hospital. Np’s have privileges to prescribe medications in every state.
On November 17th, 2015 I had an observation clinical shadowing a Registered Nurse in Case Management. Case management is a side of nursing that is not brought up very often. We started off the shift in the nurse’s office. Morgan, the nurse, had a meeting to attend at 9:00am, so we stayed in her office to get organized for the day.
I enjoyed taking this class. I did not know what to expect at first, but this class has proven to be challenging and very informative. I have learned a lot about the pharmacological principle of different drugs, which I will use in my practice as a family nurse practitioner. Each week we were given different case study, which we had to find a differential diagnosis based on our patient’s sign and symptoms and also choose the correct pharmacological agent to treat our patient. This was a time-consuming process to come up with the correct diagnosis and treatment. I learned about different pharmacological agents to treat different diseases. I also learned about different medication dosage, side effect and the mechanism of action for different drugs. I was introduced to a different database, such as Epocrates and Micromedex to look up different drugs. The case scenarios gave me the practice that I needed to become familiar with different medications, their action, dosage, side effect, adverse effect and their mechanism of action. By taking this class I am better prepared to meet the MSN program outcome.
I have had the privilege to work with an incredible nurse leader over the past two years. This particular nurse leader shares my passion for population health and case management for the support of patients in their homes and keeping patients safe and healthy. The purpose of this interview was to obtain further knowledge about the role desired by the interviewer. By attaining information from a practicing Master’s prepared nurse, the interviewer will develop a deeper understanding of the career advancement and potential opportunities that are available in the local community.
Advanced practice registered nurses play a significant part in extending access to health care by providing primary care and specialty care services to clients. Advanced practices registered are mentors, educators, researchers, and administrators. According to Health Resources and Services Administration, “Ninety-six percent of the NP workforce reported being in clinical practice, providing direct patient care” (Health Resources and Services Administration 2016). Furthermore, “Nearly three percentages were in faculty positions and approximately one percent was in administrative positions”(Health Resources and Services Administration 2016).
The opportunity to expand and refine my nursing knowledge has always equated to me attending the University of Alabama School of Nursing’s masters program. With their master’s degree programs earning the number one spot for Top 50 Best Value, the quality of the programs is undeniable. I selected to apply to the psychiatric mental health track because during my undergraduate studies, I realized this was a career worthy study. My brother was diagnosed with bipolar/schizophrenia at fifteen, and I always questioned his lack of motivation and self-care abilities. It was not until taking the Concepts of Behavioral Health Nursing, that I realized the existence of positive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, and that apathy and learning disabilities were just as much a part of my brother’s illness as hallucinations or delusions. These three passions have been a driving force in leading me to where I am today, both in my career and my personal life. “A public health nurse is a nurse who works to promote and protect the health of an entire population” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2010, p. 839) the public health nurse I chose to interview was Barbara, she currently works for the Health department and has been there for three years. During the interview Barbara discussed the requirements for a public health nurse. The individual must have the ability to exercise independent judgment, planning and able to administer safe effective public nursing care. In addition be able to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in the satisfactory solution of health problems, by recognizing and respecting of different cultural, ethnic and difference on health care practices. The nurse is also required to know disease prevention such as, different techniques on teaching, counseling, interviewing and resources available. Barbara stated that the most important part of being a public health nurse is being able to care. Barbara acknowledged that there are numerous individuals that she assists everyday that just want someone to exhibit that they care and understand. The education a public health nurse should obtain is a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which Barbara posses. “Public health nurses working with specific populations or in administration position should hold a master’s degree” ( Allender et al., 2010, p.839). Barbara discussed that before becoming a public health nurse she worked at St. Francis Hospital as med-surge nurse for five years, after that it was imperative that she change working environment. Barbara confirmed that working as a nurse in the hospital was extremely diverse then working as public health nurse. “Comparing public health nurse and general nurse, public health nursing is population based, focuses on the greater good, health promotion and disease prevention, and utilizes community resources. The general nursing is individual based, focuses on individual good, restoration of health and function, and manage resources at hand” (Minnesota Department of Health, 2007). In the beginning Barbara thought that public health nursing would be a difficult job to gain knowledge of however, she established that it was exceptionally effortless and gratifying career to posses. Barbara stated that she did not realize how much assistance was out there for the public until; she worked as public health nurse. Barbara spends 95% of her day going from place to place by doing home visits, investigating different cases, assisting with screening programs and enormous amount of paper work.
Even though tattoos are becoming part of culture and socially acceptable, the negative and prejudiced attitudes towards those with body art are still present. Not all tattoos are gang related, and one must note that they have historically been a symbol of someone’s culture or religion. Other tattoos may have just a personal meaning to its owner and was not intended to be offensive. People also do not understand that a tattoo may impede them from pursuing a professional career, regardless of their qualifications. Employers realize that the need to recruit workers from different backgrounds are important in such a competitive workforce, so they provide accommodation by having reasonable dress code policies.
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. When having a job such as nursing, professionalism is key. Two studies concluded that patients perceived their health care provider to be less professional if they had body piercings and tattoos. Even more so, the older generation definitely considered it to look worst on a female professional rather than a male. It was said by different patients that, “Male practitioners with visible piercings were almost never deemed more professional or approachable, and women with visible piercings other than in the earlobe were viewed even less favorably…” (Pfeifer). Having the patients’ respect is vital and helps reach success in being a nurse. No matter the age of patients, they are going to look up to the person caring for them and will likely judge them on their appearance. Based on the expectations of our society today, professionalism does not include visible piercings or tattoos. Tattooing has increased widespread from all ages, careers, and social classes (Westerfield, Stafford, Speroni, & Daniel, 2012). Tattoos’ usual meaning is “to stain the skin with colorings” (Goldstein, 2007). With the growing the populations, who have tattoos and/or body piercings in the work environment, there is requiring decision about what policies to establish forward associates a professional atmosphere. Thus, there assesses patients’ perceptions of health care workers with tattoos and/or body piercing (Westerfield, Stafford, Speroni, & Daniel, 2012).
As the practice is becoming increasingly popular, mainstream acceptance has given birth to a society that values appearance over ability and ultimately leading on to discrimination in practically every field. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates that appearance has become a vital contributor of success at the workplace and even in educational institutions for that matter.
