Most teenagers go home after school and do their homework; on the other hand, Sam Gleason goes straight to her working station to finish a project. Surrounded by felt-tip markers and color pencils, Sam creates drawings to sell on phones and tablet cases, along with T-shirts. Sam Gleason is a seventeen-year-old girl who resides in Pennsylvania. With a love of social media, pop-culture, and drawing, Sam wanted to expand on her skills. Social media connects us to things we love and transforms life experiences (Penna). Two years ago, Sam uploaded a picture of her font art on Instagram. Social media played a big part in where she is today. She was surprised by the responses she received from the picture, “In the beginning, my intention was not to get my art known. I didn’t even consider myself an artist, and I just posted one of my doodles that I made in class on Instagram. A ton of people liked it! My friends started asking for me to make them, and then I got requests from followers, and it all went up from there.” Now on Sam’s Instagram, you can find her latest projects along with her follower count of two hundred and seven thousand. With a school work load and extracurricular activities, on the outside Sam looks like an average teenager. With blonde hair to the middle of her back and regular, loose fitting clothing, few …show more content…
people would think that she comes home every day to finish a two to eight-hour art project to post on her website that receives at least five thousand hits per month. But do not be fooled, Sam Gleason is no drawing robot. Gleason is an active member of her high school’s student senate; also, every year you can count on Sam to be in the annual musical, along with running her current grade’s homecoming float and volunteering in the community. As a senior at her high school many of her peers look up to her. Kate Johnson says, “Sam is the one you can always count on. Yes, she has a busy schedule constantly but she always finds time to lend a helping hand where it is needed. Many of our classmates look up to Sam because she is wise beyond her years. How many other seventeen-year-old girls do you know who run their own business?” As an active student, citizen, and entrepreneur, Sam Gleason is going nowhere but up. Gleason is a role model for young entrepreneurs. While selling her art to people in the US, Australia, Asia, Europe, South America, and Canada, entrepreneurship has its benefits; Gleason says, “With all the requests of drawings and orders that need to be filled, being my own boss works well. I get to work at my house all the time. It’s been a lot easier to handle with my school schedule.” At seventeen years old, Sam Gleason has accomplished things that many can only dream of.
Gleason says, “During this past summer, I worked for a company called Freshtops and they used my own designs! Last summer, one of my drawings was featured on One Direction’s Take Me Home tour program, a world-wide known boy-band.” While accomplishing her own dreams, Sam Gleason is an inspiration for most teenagers. Jane Doe, a follower of Gleason’s work, says, “Sam is creative, determined, and hard-working. She always has a new project on her desk. While Sam is doing what she adores, she is also creating things that her buyers love as well. It’s a
win-win!” Some say the key to life is happiness; while Sam Gleason says the key to be a successful entrepreneur is happiness. Now that Gleason has a bigger following of fans she doesn’t care about the money or the hits on her website, she wants the fans to be happy. Gleason says, “My drawings can either be good or bad, it all depends on my mood. Thus, happiness is key to completing a good drawing, but a good drawing means nothing if it is not something my buyers want to see. Luckily my buyers and I share the same common interests and I also take special requests. I’ll do anything to make my buyers or fans happy. They are the reason I’m able to do what I love. Their happiness is the most important to me and the business.” Gleason’s followers are the main reason she continues drawing, “My followers say I inspire them, which is really hard to believe. I’m just doing what I love! I continue to draw because of the stories my followers send me. They send me messages about how they started new projects because they were inspired by me. It’s a great feeling to know you can make someone’s day.” The feedback Sam receives inspires her to continue her work and even more so, expand on her projects. With over three hundred thousand followers total on all her social media platforms, Gleason hopes this jump start in her career will help her in the future. Gleason hopes to one-day work in the advertising department of MTV. As a young entrepreneur, Sam serves as an inspiration for teenagers who aspire to be successful. Her inspiration comes from the success of many young people in pop-culture and on social media. With followers who keep her motivated and a family that supports her, nothing can stop Sam Gleason. She emphasizes, “I hope that people who see my success in what I do can look and me and say, “Hey, I can do what I love and even be successful.” Today you can still do what you love and maybe even be an inspiration for others. No matter your age or ethnicity, nothing is impossible in the world today. With the power of social media, a seventeen-year-old was able to pursue her love for drawing and have a small business. Like my dad always told me, grab your dream and don’t let go.” The success of seventeen-year-old Sam Gleason is an inspiration for everyone.
So Sammy quits his job to prove to himself, maybe to others, that he belongs in this "place." Quitting his job is his first step in achieving this goal. Sammy was obviously enthralled by the girls from the moment they walked in the A & P. He was not keen on the other two girls, but Queenie overwhelmed him. He may have even taken a liking to Queenie, but any average, nineteen-year old male would do the same after witnessing such striking beauty as is described. On the other hand, the average male would not quit a job and create such turmoil if first impression was the only cause. How interested could he actually be? In trying to figure out Queenie’s persona, he asks, "do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?
Sam Gilliam is was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on November 30, 1933. He served in the United States Army for two years. He received his education from University of Louisville and is a world renowned color artist. Morris Louis and Ken Noland’s works of art had a huge impact on Sam Gilliam and his works. Gilliam taught in Louisville publics schools and many art colleges. He is known for his colorful and unique art. He was one of the first artists to not frame his art work instead he would just paint on a bare canvas or drapes. His art style is very modern and loud. When someone looks at his works of art they have instant imagination and questions. Gilliam leaves his works of art up for interpretation, there is no solid meaning to them. Anyone can make see whatever they want, his art allows for freedom and Ray II is no different.
This lead to one of the biggest questions from the movie, how did he become that way? Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. He was self conscious about that fact that he couldn 't write, so he never made attempts to move up in the world. He

Radio was first bullied by the football team before the befriended him and Sam has multiple friends who also have different intellectual disabilities. Radio goes to school, under the supervision of the coach while Sam has a job he attends to daily to pay bills.
Sam goes through a different array of moodiness and it was evident throughout the entire movie; all of which is completely understandable for a sixteen-year-old. One of the quotes she stated was, “I’m sixteen, everything is platinum, and I should be happy. It is physically impossible for me to be happy”. This quote was directly related to the video for Week 6’s discussion post, Inside the Teenage Brain. The reasoning behind Sam’s unexplainable array of emotions were her changes in the frontal cortex of her brain. The effects that followed these changes were the mood changes and feelings of unexplainable
Social media may be used to develop specific characters by using various media platforms on the web. To establish the presence online, transmedia creators should begin by accessing platforms that viewers are using and already exist. These websites may include Ning, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram (Hayes, 2011). Starting a social media campaign, should begin with the two most widely used social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook. According to research conducted by The Atlantic, “More than 20 million U.S. adults access Twitter at least once a month and more than 170 million tweets are sent every day” (Jackson, 2011). To help create hype about these characters The Goddess Within will establish Twitter presences for their characters, particularly for Athena, the Goddess. With her sassy and forward personality, she would not hesitate to speak her mind, thus personifying this character via Twitter would make for an engaging and fun Twitter experience for users. Athena’s Twitter could also be used to hyperlink to other websites and social media pages created to promote this story world. Another character who may also make for an interesting Twitter ...
Michael Rock’s article “Designer as Author” addresses a quite popular topic of discussion in graphic design. Authorship. In there, Rock validates the active roles played by designers across various fields of artistic productions. The connection that exists between authorship and design is built on the ability of the designer to stand and work alone to accomplish a project. The article is more of argument-oriented in a way that highlights the overall roles designers play in the success of a project.
...h social media, the talent agencies in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s turned their luck around. Through social media, the agencies fueled rumors and episodes to shift the power back to their side from the managers, casting directors and movie producers. Ken Slevin, one of the founders and owners of the talent agency CESD, said that social media aided his company’s rise to power in the United States. Because of the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, he has found talent and expanded his company to cover the entire United States of America. One of his agents Mallory Tucker said that social media helps her keep in touch with her clients easily and allows her to connect on a more personal level. Through social media, this connection between agents and their artists should be the catalyst to keep the industry alive and running well for the future.
“Tara Donovan earned a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in 1991, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999 (Donovan).” While at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Tara Donovan was taught by Kendall Buster. Donovan worked with Kendall Buster after graduation for many years. She learned a lot from working with Buster, especially about “working with assistants and making things on a very large scale (Baume et al. pg#).” Eventually, Donavan began to make artwork from everyday objects like toothpicks, tar paper, drinking straws, scotch tape and styrofoam cups. Donovan began making art from this format because these items were affordable on a waitress’s salary (Baume et al. pg#). Donovan has received many awards for her work. Among some of the awards are the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award (2008) and the first annual Calder Prize (2005) (Pace Gallery - Tara Donovan). From being taught and working for Buster, Donovan learned to make artwork on a very large scale and began to use every day, affordable objects to do
Gupta, A. (2013, September 4). Three Ways to Use Pinterest and Instagram to Build Stronger
Often when artists collaborate what the world gets to see is a finished body of work that exists separate from the individual practices of those involved. We don’t get to see the sketchbooks or the blueprints, and in the end, it’s up to the viewer to piece together what collaboration looks like behind the scenes. This month at SITE Sharp, collaborators Alden Burke and Jasper Goodrich have chosen to take a different route; opening up to the public an archive of prints, photos, assemblage, and paintings that span the timeline of their collaboration in their show “How to Dig a Hole Outside Itself”.
For all we know, social media has changed our lives forever. It gives us some opportunities that we did not have before. My social media use is very similar to that of Eva and Sara. We all use social media more as an observer to keep in the loop of friends and family. We are able to stay up updated to the second on everything that is happening in the world simply because of social media. Now we can only imagine what the future hold and how we will communicate
Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
