My hypothesis was supported because each experiment did what I thought it would. The salt sank when it was inside of the hot and cold water. When salt was placed inside of the hot and cold water, it sank because of it weighing more than the cold and hot water. We can look at it in this way, salt water weighs more than fresh water. The weight of a cubic foot of salt water is 64.1 lbs. On the other hand, a cubic foot of fresh water only weighs 62.4 lbs. The numbers are different because the salt water has a higher density compared to fresh water. On Wednesday, February 15th, I was able to have the opportunity to listen to Andrew Lipman. Andrew Lipman is the author of The Saltwater Frontier: Indians and the Contest for the American Coast. In the novel, he explained the life of Native Americans living in New England and on the coast of Long Island. During this time, most individuals relied on trading natural resources. In order for profit for the resources, the colonists and Native Americans used wampum. Wampum was used as a sacred gift in Native American culture as a peace offering, funerals and marriages. Colonialists had an advantage towards using wampum. They used beads as a commodity for furs. Native Americans relied on canoes for transportation. Canoes can hold up to fifty people.

The researcher conducting this experiment is trying to find out which salt- Epsom, table salt, and sea salt- will increase the boiling point of water the most. Sodium chloride is believed to increase the boiling point of water because when salt is suspended into the water, the sodium and chlorine ions leave the “salt crystals” and mix with the water molecules. The hypothesis for the glow sticks in different temperature experiment was accepted. The data used for the experiment that supports my hypothesis was that the glow stick in the glass cup filled with two hundred thirty-five milliliters of filtered cold water illuminated the longest. This glow stick in the cold water lasted on average of all three trials for ten hours and thirty-six minutes. The cold glow stick lasted three hundred and sixty-six more minutes compared to the lowest lasting time of which the hot water glow stick lasted. On average the hot water lasted four hours and nineteen minutes, and the room temperature glow stick lasted eight hours and fifty-seven minutes. I think the cold water lasted the longest because molecules move slow in cold water, causing it to slow the reaction down which made it last longer. We were preparing for our trip to Salton Sea area. Our final destination was Salvation Mountain and Slab City. But abandoned cities by salton sea and dead sea itself certainly draw our attention to stop and investigate the area. We decided to avoid a freeway and get to the area through Joshua Tree National Park. We cut across Joshua Tree National park left Mojave desert and came out in Colorado desert right by Salton Sea. As soon as we reached the area i noticed a strange and unpleasant smell. The area had post apocalyptic look with the surrounding structures standing in ruins. The sea was the dull blue of a cataract, surrounded by small volcanoes, bubbling mud pots, and ragged, blank mountains used for bombing practice by the Navy and the Marines . It was hard to imagine that once upon the time this area was known to be a paradise , "a germ in a desert ". What happened here ? why this area that was once flourishing with tourists, new constructions, yacht clubs
Even though saltwater contributes most of the evaporated water, it does not evaporate as fast as freshwater. Fresh water evaporates much faster because of what it is composed of unlike saltwater. Salt water obviously has salt and that is a component that is usually not evaporated. This problem slows down evaporation because the salt molecules are locked into the water molecules and it takes longer to separate them. Drowning in salt water and fresh water is different, even though you would think it would be the same. Only around 10% of people who drown will drown in salt water, the other 90% drown in fresh water; more specifically, they drown in swimming pools. A person drowning in salt water can be dead from anywhere between five and thirty minutes, while in fresh water it can take anywhere between five and twenty minutes. That’s a ten-minute difference and it’s a big difference. So, why does it happen like this? Why can a person be more likely to drown in fresh water, which is generally more controlled than salt water? Why is there a ten-minute drowning difference? It all has to do with osmosis, both of the solutions react different with our bodies.
The last part of experiment 5, was learning about specific gravity and temperature. Specific gravity does not have any units, it is unitless. When measuring for the temperature, we used a thermometer to calculate the Celsius of the water, 10% sodium chloride, and isopropyl alcohol. The specific gravity uses a hydrometer to measure the gravity of the liquids. Using the hydrometer, to figure out the measurements we have to look at it from top to bottom. The cotton ball filter left the least amount of salt in the filtered water. It’s trials averaged only 8.67 grams of salt left in the water. The water with the next lowest salt content is the water that came from the sand filter. The filter filled with sand let a mean of 13.3 grams of salt pass through it. Its trials have a range of 0.5 grams. The filters with the third lowest salt content in the water that passed through it are the charcoal filters. The charcoal filters took the longest to filter salt water through. However, the trials using the charcoal filter had an mean of 13.73 grams of salt remaining after the water had been filtered. The range of the trials was 1.3 grams. The filter with the highest salt content in its filtered water is the filter with sponges in it. The filters with sponges in them let the salt water pass easily through them. The mean amount of salt that passed through the sponge filters is 14.03 grams. The range was 1.4 grams. The mean amount of salt left after boiling the saltwater that did not go through a filter (the control group) is 15.5 grams and has a range of 0.5 grams. Overall, I observed that the more dense the materials in the filters, the less salt passes through
