We were all taught that our Earth is covered by seventy-percent of water. But did you know that there’s only two percent of our food sources come from the ocean? Today, I am standing here to propose the importance of opening up 2 new open-net salmon farms in British Columbia. I am a managing director from an international salmon producing company Marine Harvest. I am going to present you the economic, environmental, and social benefits of new salmon farms. Above all, I am for setting up two new salmon farms in British Columbia because salmon farming is an important economic sector for BC as well as Canada. Firstly, Marine Harvest Canada produces one-fifth of the world farmed salmon in six different countries including Canada (“Welcome to Marine Harvest Canada”). Secondly, Marine Harvest’s salmon exports around the globe is increasing over years (“Integrated Annual Report 2016”). As people are purchasing more fish, the fish industries become vital to a province as well as a country’s economy. Thirdly, Marine Harvest Canada provides jobs for about 200 people in Port Hardy and Port McNeill in BC (“Part of the Community”). In the second place, new open-net salmon farms should be setted up, because Marine Harvest Canada not only keeps a sustainable farming practice to ensure the environment will not be impacted, at the same time, we even help to increase the well-being of our environment. First of all, Marine Harvest Canada cares about the environment and the fish through the utilization of feed management, environmental monitoring, and adoption of new techniques and technologies (“Salmon Farming in BC”). Marine Harvest Canada not only cares about the fish, we also care about what they leftover. All Marine Harvest's waste tests have shown to be below levels specified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Health Canada, and the countries of export (“Food Safety for Salmon”). Also, salmon farming is efficient on protecting wild salmons from extinction. Study has shown by 2030, people will eat nearly 70% more fish than today, so wild salmon couldn't keep up with the trend (Suzuki David). Lastly, the new salmon farms will benefit local communities from social and economic aspects.
Marine Harvest Canada builds a sustainable community which ensures our employees to live and work happily by supporting many other community organizations including service groups, sports teams, and social programs (“Supporting the Community”). As Aboriginal people is a very important part of Canada. Marine Harvest Canada’s employees comprise of one-fifth of aboriginal descent (“Aboriginal People and Marine Harvest Canada Working Together”). Marine Harvest Canada also collaborates First Nation community Kitasoo/Xai’xais, and processes 5,000 tonnes of salmon a year from local farms (“Aboriginal People and Marine Harvest Canada Working

On the day of April 18, 2015, Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife released 54,000 hatchery juvenile spring-run Chinook salmon into the San Joaquin River. A failure is that dry year conditions will likely impact the number of returning fish. The five year drought really had an impact on the project since the salmon is in critical conditions for survival to adulthood and to support the goal of the Restoration Program to restore the salmon. The updated cost of the entire restoration increased from $1 billion to $1.5 billion, which includes $300 million for levee work that the state would address. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the AquAdvantage salmon for consumption. The salmon has been genetically engineered to grow faster than the conventional farmed salmon.
As the United States population has increased 75 million to 317.9 million humans in hundred years. So has the demands from seafood increasing as well. Americans consumed 4.5 billion pounds of seafood a year. The company of AquaBounty Technologies has been trying to create a product to combat the grow demand to produce enough seafood with crippling the wild fish population. The company created a genetically modified Atlantic salmon as a solution for the problem .The genetically engineered AquAdvantage Atlantic salmon grows twice as fast as regular salmon. In order to get the Atlantic salmon grow twice as fast the received growth hormone into fertilized salmon eggs. This allows them fish to produce year-round. AquAdvantage genetically engineered Atlantic salmon has product been approval by Federal and Drug Administration for human consumption. As a representative for the Center for Food Safety, a U.S. non-profit organization that works to protect the environment and human health. I evaluate elevated the AquaBounty Technologies product of genetically engineered AquAdvantage Atlantic salmon on the criteria healthy for humans, feeding practices, and environmental impact. I determined that Center for Food Safety will promotes repeal of the FDA approval commercialized sell of genetically engineered salmon.
The topical focus of this paper is the Atlantic salmon fishery. The Fraser sockeye salmon is a very important species of fish in many communities in the province of British Columbia, generating millions and millions of dollars each year. According to “Salmon of the Americas, an organization of salmon-producing companies in Canada, Chile and the United States, 70 percent of the salmon produced in British Columbia and Washington comes from salmon farms. If it weren’t for these farms, we would not have the luxury and abundance of this delicious and healthy food available to us year round. Since the age of two, a favorite hobby of mine passed down from my father is panfishing. Considered the bread and butter of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes, panfish such as perch, bluegill, and crappie provide an excellent source of fun, and tasty food, for all ages of anglers. Not only do they consist of the easiest species to catch, panfish are considered one of the top class of fish to target during cold, frigid winter months when an ice layer forms and oxygen levels deplete. Panfish generally school up during the ice season, allowing anglers to find them with ease compared to the warmer summer months where they previously roamed open water in search of food. These once lethargic fish are now tricked into biting very easily, making it simple for fisherman of all ages to learn the tactics of fishing, and take home a delicious meal.

However, hatcheries have been the hottest topic from last couple years debated by two groups of people, opponent, and supporter. The reason why the opponent against the hatcheries is that, opponent think the hatcheries have been not doing anything that they expected, and they kept asking for more funding to keep the wild salmon in the safety situation. According to from one of the opponents says, "Hatcheries can play a significant role in salmon recovery if they focus on protecting genetic diversity instead of producing huge numbers of fish." which meant that they thought the hatcheries only knew how to produce more salmon instead of keeping genetic diversity of wild salmon. Some even say, " Hatchery salmon threaten wild salmon restoration in another, very subtle way: They skew people's perception of salmon populations." But, from the supporter point of view, they've totally agreed and believed that the fish hatcheries have been doing the right thing for salmon, so do I. Like I said, I went to the Fish Hatchery as a volunteer in WA, and one of the fish manager told me that the funding they received is much less than we expected, as well
