Introduction
This photo by Sally Mann features three children, however, only one child is facing forwards and she is holding a cigarette which is unusual for a young girl.
Discussion
The photo has been taken outdoors on a dirt path that is leading to a forest. On the dirt path, there are the three children which make it more pleasing to the eye and also ties the image together. The girl in the middle facing towards the camera is the subject matter this is because she has eye contact with the camera and because of the intense brightness of her dress, which leads you to look straight at her. The middle girl’s hair is left messy even though she is dressed neatly this adds texture and realism to the photo because people can relate and upstand what it feels like, so views now have more of a connection the image. The tone of this image is a tad gloomy because of the darkness of the forest. The contrast in this image is not high because the elements of the picture all hold sameness. This image has a shallow depth of field which is

The cigarette symbolises the bad dictions that the older generation made and how the younger generation have observed that and copied. The child on the stilts shows how the children still want to have fun but they also want to be adults. (He also wants to be taller like the adults.).The symbols are connected to the theme which is; the older generation affects the younger. Even by the way that the two girls are standing in the foreground of the photo resembles the way that adults would stand and act. This photographers point is to do more than just bring awareness to the issue of the older generation influencing the younger generation. It wants to provoke views to be better role models. That is the message in this photograph; to influence people to act in a way that they would be proud to see the younger generation action
It also represented that this a new day and the world will rebuild. This picture promises that we will stand together and build from the bottom. The location of this image plays the major role on the overall message. The deeper meaning is clear once looking a little
The lighting for this picture was absolutely perfect because it was getting dark and in my opinion darkness defines the projects. The darkness represents the mystery of fear within the community since the projects is known for drugs and violence. The people living within the community possibly fear the fact that their children have to grow up in that specific environment. Darkness is substantial and compelling. The second images shows the different side within Bedford Stuyvesant that many do not get to see through media. I specifically took this picture because it is the complete opposite of the first image. The image shows beautiful brownstone houses of various colors. These bright cool colors represent warmth within the community. These colors say the neighborhood is not all about crime and violence but beauty within. This image gives a whole new perspective to people who have never visited within Bedford Stuyvesant and has only seen what the media portrays. The colors of the houses give life and a sense of personality to the neighborhood. Bedford Stuyvesant is truly one of the most beautiful neighborhoods I have ever
A noticeable symbol in the piece is how the roles are reversed the Aboriginal man being the minority and the European culture being much more prominent in Australia in the 1980s. This shows how time has affected the culture and the journey of the Aboriginal culture has resulted in a loss of tradition and loss of ancestral history. Another noticeable symbol is that the Aboriginal man is in a white suit, this could mean a number of things the assimilation process, the change in culture to fit into modern society or just a wardrobe choice. If the suit does have a purpose it is showing how he has taken on white culture but the picture of an Indigenous man pasted over his own face could represent that even though he has lost his culture he still at heart is tied to his ancestral past. Another is the men and woman in the background on the hill in The Conciliation are now grey statues.
The commercial had a deeper meaning throughout to depict the audience, purpose, content, creator’s reasons, and the structure of the video. The audience was aimed for teenagers, smokers, and parents. The purpose was to show how smoking was bad a bad effect on a person’s life. Throughout the commercial were phrases to influence people on how terrible to smoke. The creator of the video obviously wanted to show teenagers how that smoking will pull you away from your life. The structure of the commercial was well organized to leave a lasting effect on the reasons why smoking is bad for a
The second thing you notice in this ad is the spokesperson. It’s a nice looking, slim-shaped White lady. She’s dress in a gold short dress and also very pretty. She could attract attention from anybody of any sex or race, but I believe she is try to grab the attention of young white teenage men. I think they are trying to say that if you smoke these cigarettes you could get a woman like the spokesperson in this ad. Some people like things that represent beauty, and that she is, and she also represents the cigarettes. She’s carrying a carton of these Turkish Gold Camel Cigarettes and in a way it looks like she is trying to sell these cigarettes. They also have this glow of light around her and the box cigarettes next to her. Something else I notice is that the lady is dressed in like clothes from the 60’s or 70’s. Although these cigarettes have just hit the market, they try to use the mature look to make you feel like it’s something that’s been around for a while.
Under the caption action it explains how Dally (again) saves Johnny from the cigarette started church fire. The cigarette caused the fire which ultimately caused Johnny's death, after Johnny dies Dally loses his gold. This shows how the cigarette also seen as problems the greasers have can cause more and life gets harder while they lose their gold. Dally sadly deals with this by asking Ponyboy for a cigarette pack while in the hospital. Which symbolizes how Dally dealt with Johnny's death and going crazy.Under the image caption explains how after the fire Ponyboy continues to smoke the cigarette right after this fire was started. The man next to him even tells him to not smoke it. The cigarette an addicting object which causes more problems. Finally, the two book quotes in colorful circles. In one the pink symbolizes the fire and the fury that burnt in Dally’s mind over this act but also the sensitivity of Johnny and Ponyboys act of
It says, “You smoked weed”. You got behind the wheel. And you hit a six-year-old girl on her bike. Weed can make you do stupid things like that.” Like this, the sentences help us to understand and to imagine this picture.
First, the scene in the image was manipulated through stage-managing, a common practice in photojournalism. While the image of the migrant mother, Florence Thompson, appears to the viewer to be a genuine and unprompted look at the hardship and deprivation of a dejected migrant woman. This, of course, was the reality of Ms. Thompson’s personal situation at the time. But the scene itself was micromanaged to appear in a lucid and vivid form in the image, including editing Ms. Thompson’s older children from the image to create the more poignant scene of a mother holding a small child and using a pose in which the woman is looking out into the distance, with the two children told to lo...
Her very warm outfit gives the picture a sense of emotion that can affect the audience outlook of the perfume on oneself. The lighting filter emphasizes shades shown by the product notifying that this is the best a woman can receive. The lighting looks to be coming from the sun angled downward on the woman and, the field of flowers colors’ blends in to give the flowers a more delicate look as women would look at them. The flowers’ colors have similar warmth matching the lighting. If the colors were to be an off color not matching the lighting, the photo would lose its focus of the warm tone the advertisement is bringing because of the different tone the color brings. The lighting on to the flowers causes the flowers to pop out more than other items due to the slight color difference; this pop out affection connects to the perfume name “poppy.” The lighting makes her stand out, making her the overall focus. The audience grabs an idea of how the flowers smell and wants to be involved in the peace that her body language portrays. The woman when wearing this perfume receives that power but still have a gentle image. The lighting being her power, which causes her to stand out, gives the audience a reason to receive the strong light in their life also. Women are expected to be loving and peaceful people to maintain an image for society, but also wants to have a powerful structure, however it’s hard to not be perceived as overly dominate woman living up to myths , that a good life consists of buying possessions and our body is not good enough toward
The way they hold themselves with contorted stature gives away that they are able to corrupt peace. The shorter man in the white shirt with a black flag symbol on it shows that he may be ignorant to what his shirt represents. His shirt stands for anarchism, a political statement that wants stateless societies that are self-governed (Marshall 4). Anarchism is dealt with in harmful ways back when is first began in the mid 1800s. The symbol on the shirt the boy is wearing represents the time when anarcho-punk bands joined anarchism and made the circle with an ‘a’ through it a national symbol. The girl on the other hand, on the far right hand side, portrays risqué attire. With a cut off shirt and what looks like patched up clothing, can show a lack of respect for ones body. The boy who has his arm around her, looks similar in attire. It shows that he is not wearing a shirt and only a jacket. He looks like he is want-to-be band boy. The boy on the left side has hands raised looking as if he is trying to scare the mother, and by the look on the mothers face, the boy has succeeded. These kids aren’t helping make socialization a good thing what so
This displays the most basic emotion and enables the viewer to purely focus on their own feeling towards the image without the distraction of color. The black and white usage also gives the picture even more emotion. Black and white in this photo can represent life and death, young and old as of not knowing if the girl’s implied illness will take her life at a young age, or even knowledge or naïve behavior as if new information has just been given to the couple causing emotion. The direct attention of the eye is drawn to the black and white color followed closely by other aiding strategies.
The main picture in the advertisement is one of an older man that appears to be a doctor. The picture has the man relaxing while holding a cigarette and correlates directly with the main caption of the advertisement. The picture conveys the message that sophisticated and intelligent people smoke Camel cigarettes. The picture also implies that Camel cigarettes are the healthiest cigarettes because doctors smoke this brand of cigarettes and doctors understand what the best is for their health. Another image in the advertisement is a woman smiling while holding a cigarette. This image correlates with the main image by appealing to the sophisticated and classy look. It shows that classy women also smoke Camel cigarettes. The picture includes a T on the woman’s face. This T is used to add another aspect to the message expressed in the text beside it. Lastly, the advertisement has an image of the product to show customers what the product is and what to look for when they are shopping. When a person sees the product in the store, it subliminally connects the person to the
Modern advertising companies rely heavily on subliminal messaging to entice their target audiences. Advertisements are often crafted for the purpose of appealing to specific characteristics in the hopes of drawing the attention and appealing to the senses of prospective buyers. Tobacco companies have become notorious for the implementation of such techniques. The images portrayed in many of “big tobacco’s” ads stimulate a variety of senses and emotions. One common tactic used by Camel cigarettes (a subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.) is to isolate and promote life’s pleasures, and American patriotism. A specific Camel ad found in Elle, a common, upscale women’s magazine is a perfect example of such advertising. “Pleasure To Burn” is the slogan centered upon the advertisement’s page. Above the slogan, “CAMEL” is written, all letters in Camel’s trademark font. A beautiful orange sunset serves as a mesmerizing background to an attractive, young women relaxing and enjoying a cigarette on the back of a pristine classic car. The image is painted in the style of the early ‘50s “pin-up doll” image. Smoke lazily wafts up through the lettering from the cigarette positioned directly beneath the word “Burn”. The woman relaxes lazily, eyes closed, facing up towards the orange sunset. There is no question that she is blissfully enjoying her cigarette, and her surroundings. She is dressed in the uniform of a diner waitress, complete with hat, apron, and “JANE” stenciled upon her left breast patch. Rather than conjure the stereotypical images of young women on roller-skates rushing around busily serving patrons, the subject of this ad is very much relaxes, and very much alone. Rather than appear to be...
The background image is a sunrise over a small village. The sun stands out from the earthy tones of the rest of the background. It looks as if it was colored in with a pink highlighter. The pure radiance of the sunrise captures the attention of bystander. The luminosity of the sun is surrounded by a yellow skyline with brown houses of the rural community below it. Surrounding the houses is a field of green grass, but as you follow the path that the girl is on the lush carpet of healthy grass turns into a withered field. This shows that the crops where the girl works have not produced enough food for that season, making the girl short on income. The ...
The writing on the poster is in incursive and it says “Dearest art collector, it has come to our attention that your collection, like most, does not contain enough art by women we know that you feel terrible about this and will rectify the situation immediately all our love, guerrilla girls.” The message is a very serious message with a slight twinge of humor and when the used that soft penmanship it was like they were saying” yes we are girls and were serious” This is a prime example as to how the guerrilla girls used symbols to protest the unjust treatment of women in the art world. “WANT TO EARN BIG MONEY IN THE ART WORLD?” is another poster that uses symbols to make a statement. In this art piece they used a dollar, ran a big thick black line that is cut up in to six pieces through the dollar. The line went separated the dollar into thirds. These symbols show the differences in what women make versus what men
