I am writing this report today to explain the major reasons behind the horrific witchcraft trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in the years 1692 and 1693. For years, this event has been ignored. However, after analyzing the evidence in this case, I have some startling news to share. First, I will explain to you several theories that make the most sense. Then, I will to you what I believe caused the Salem community to respond in such a cruel and violent way. The theory I believe that played the largest part in this tragedy is theory one. The theory states how a fungus in the rye could have caused the girls to have the symptoms they were having. The fungus when consumed causes muscle contractions, hallucinations, thoughts, and confusion. This relates to the case due to the victims sharing similar symptoms. The three theories in a combination explain why the trials took off like it did. “LSD is a derivative of ergot, a fungus that affects rye grain. Ergotism, ergot poisoning, had played a role in other outbreaks of bizarre behavior, such as the one that afflicted the small French town of Pont-Saint-Esprit in 1951.” this quote states how this had caused problems in other places and so it’s not surprising that it happened in this town as well. The title of the theory 2 explains its role “Jealousy, Economic Differences, and Hostility.” the people were mad and held grudges especially the poor over the rich and so it’s no surprise that the poor blamed them first. Lastly the third theory played a part as the children most likely hated their current lifestyle of boredom and work so once the girls got the sickness, “And at a time when young girls were forbidden to act out or express themselves, it’s is easy to see why they were so captivated by the attention they received when they became
