The first visual impression of Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet is on the right side of a long hallway within the New Kingdom portion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are two Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet statues in front of a fake door made of dark brown wood. The view of the statue is clear from the front and the sides. The back is not able to be seen well because of its placement against the wall and the barrier to the side of the statue. Along the walls there are many pieces of Egyptian wall art and short barriers so no one steps in front of the art. The lighting was significantly dimmer than the rest of the museum because of the lack of windows and the overall space is a more of a narrow hallway than an open space. The second aspect that shocked me was the height of the statue. For reference, I am 5’11” and the statue is close to two feet or more taller than me. Along with the height, another impressive aspect was the amount of work put into the statue to carve something out of stone and still maintain the overall shape of the body and the detail in the face rather than the lower body. I had these reactions because it is astounding that people could construct large statues and do it so beautifully. The size of the Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet is approximately eight to eight and a half feet tall. The material the statue is made from is granodiorite, which is a type of stone. The technique used to make the statue was carving. The color of the Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet is a medium gray with off white or beige flecks in it.
