There are numerous essential principles that are inquiring about, concerning the rules and procedures in art. There are major guidelines that are the foundation to building a great piece of artwork. As an artist, one should learn that there are primary rules of art that must be followed. They are helpful in creating successful end results that are valuable for producing remarkable quality pieces. However, there are exceptions to those rules, when it comes to artistic uniqueness and making a statement. Essentially, if it does not interfere with the ending product quality. Looking at the rule of proportions, we find you cannot accomplish anything without proportions. From using it in the correct manner to even the point of manipulating the proportions, …show more content…
It relates to how an object is compared in size to another object. An example of this is an orange compared to a basketball, obviously, the basketball should be drawn bigger compared to the orange, which would be made smaller in size. It just would not make sense to make the orange bigger than the basketball. So always be careful, and look at size comparisons when creating a piece of artwork. In addition to size, there also comes scale when it comes to proportions. Scale is a little different from the size, although many artists mistake the two as one and the same. Unlike size where we look at comparisons; scale looks at the distance between two or more objects. For example, let's imagine two trees, one is closer and the other is farther away. Thus, concerning reality, the two trees are the same size compared to each other, but because the first tree is closer to the viewer, it appears much larger, and the second tree looks to be smaller in comparison. If the trees were their realistic sizes, the artwork would lack depth, which is one thing that makes a great piece of art. That is the definition of scale in the art world. Yet we can hardly forget balance, as it plays an important role in defining proportions. Balance is
I disagree with Sporre because there should not be any requirement s to artwork. The reason is what if the artist doesn’t want to carve the material. I think the artist needs to do what they think not what Sporre thinks because he is not the one who is doing their art. When you are looking at a sculpture do you want to ask your self did they make that out of their own ideas or did they just make it because they had to do the requirements that have to be
...ion. The painter put Washington to appear as the only element in the painting that does not show movement. Washington stands upright and unwavering, focusing his thoughts on the battle ahead or future. His determinations stimulate his soldiers as they struggle against great odds to cross the icy river at dawn. Proportionally, usually refers to the way different elements in a painting relating to each other in terms of size. The painter put George Washington to be bigger than other sailors to justify proportion. We are able to understand that art painting is just like any other art work. He uses color to distance object and how the form appears to give three dimensions. To my conclusion the element of art work in painting are justified to make the painting look real and lively with the use of perspective, texture, color, form, and motion, and proportions.
Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson’s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.
Towering at almost 1000 meters and at a plunge of 807 meters, Angel Falls lies at the edge of the Auyan Tepui mountain nested deep within Venezuela’s natural beauty, Canaima National Park. Angel Falls’s elevation is so high up that the falling water evaporates before it hits the ground, turning into mist. It is estimated that it is 15 times the height of the great Niagara Falls and has a base of 500 feet wide. “It was sighted by explorer Ernesto Sánchez La Cruz, but he did not publicize his discovery.” (wiki) It wasn’t “discovered” by the west until it was visited in 1935 by American aviator, James Crawford Angel, on a flight while looking for ore bed; even though the indigenous Pemón people already inhabited the area. He landed his plane a few years later after but it got stuck and had to walk down the mountain with his family. The falls was named after Angel yet the indigenous people had already named the waterfall as the “Devil’s Mouth”.
The first artwork I chose for the formal analysis project is The Tiger by Ito Jakuchù originally painted in 1755. This painting is of a tiger licking its paw in the grass underneath a tree branch. There seems to be two diagonal planes as the tiger is leaning forward and sitting erect. There is a horizontal plane from what appear to be branches above the tiger. The painting has asymmetrical balance as the elements are equally distributed to balance the top and the bottom of the space. The artwork demonstrates several types of line. There are curved lines used in the tiger’s stripes. There are also diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines used in the background for the grass and the overhanging tree branch. The curved and wavy lines used in the tiger’s body, for example in the shoulder muscles, imply movement in addition to the curve in the tiger’s tail. The color scheme used in this painting seems to be complementary to one another as the artist used orange and brown tones with blue and red-orange accents for the tiger’s eyes and tongue. Black is used throughout the p...
Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
Man has long created art, this much is certain. However, man has never ultimately defined art. There are so many things which qualify as art and as many qualities to each piece that trying to find answers only seems result in more questions. The formalist theory of art, as present by Clive Bell, makes an attempt at defining art and answering many of these questions. Below is a discussion of the formalist theory; its definition, its strengths, and its weaknesses as evidenced by the work of Clive Bell.
Each drawing. Each painting. Each sculpture. It can give you a glimpse of what is going on in the artist’s head. Take the painting “El Autobus” by Frida Kahlo as an example. It has been said that the painting is in reference of the accident Frida Kahlo had where she got impaled by a metal handrail. The painting is of a bench with people sitting on it just before boarding the bus. This kind of artwork, where the artist puts a little bit of him/her self in it is something I strive for. I want to make art that reflects me, or that means something to me. I don’t want to make something just because, I want it to be where the viewer could possibly see the hard work, the passion, the emotion behind it. Things that most times get
The use of size to give depth could be seen by the people in the painting because of people closer to the bottom of the painting are clearly larger than the people on the top side of the painting. Another use of size could be seen by the buildings since the building in the top center is larger than the buildings behind it. The building and the people's size give the illusion that the ones in the front are closer than the ones in the back. This is because the closer an object is to the viewer, the larger it is. Therefore, the buildings and people’s difference in size show that there are some of the buildings and people that are close to the audience and some that are farther away from the audience.
AA theory by Clive Bell suggests the pinpoints the exact characteristic which makes a work true art. According to Bell, an artwork must produce “aesthetic emotion” (365). This aesthetic emotion is drawn from the form and formality of an artwork rather than whether or not it is aesthetically pleasing or how well it imitates what it is trying to depict. The relation of objects to each other, the colors used, and the qualities of the lines are seemingly more important than what emotion or idea the artwork is trying to provoke. Regardless of whether or not the artwork is a true imitation of certain emotions, ideals, or images, it cannot be true art unless it conjures this aesthetic emotion related to formality (367).
Modern Art does not follow any traditional rule, in fact Modern Art breaks this barrier. In the traditional way of painting, you must the true nature of your work; you must have the balance in creating it. The rules that are working on our universe must be applied to the old traditional painting.
Today most art education programs are made up of four components. One of these components is art aesthetics. Aesthetics is the study of the nature of a piece of artwork. It analyzes the work by asking specific questions regarding the artist and the piece. The viewer becomes the judge in a sense. It tries to discover what the artwork might be representing. They could also ask what type of emotion the artist was trying to convey in their work. The viewer also takes part in analyzing the physical aspects and characteristics of the work. It focuses on the use of color, sequence and synchrony of an artwork. It notes the artist’s craftsmanship, artistic ability and proficiency in technique (Hoffman 1999).
Art can be defined in many ways by an individual. One can say that any creative output by a person is considered art. Others contend that art must conform to a societal standard and the basis of the creation should be understood by most intellectual people. For example, some contend that computer-generated images, such as fractals, are not art due to the large role played by a computer. E.O. Wilson states “the exclusive role of the arts is to intensify aesthetic and emotional response. Works of art communicate feeling directly from mind to mind, with no intent to explain why the impact occurs” (218). A simple definition may be that art is the physical expression of the ideals formed by the mind.
Personally, my culture did not play a big role when I was in the midst
In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.
