The Fairmont Royal York Hotel or the Royal York Hotel has been a significant part of the Toronto skyline since 1929, and continues to be an important piece of history and architecture today. The Hotel is located centrally in downtown providing direct access to Union Station across the street. It wasn't until 1999 that the Royal York Hotel was renamed to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The property that houses the Hotel has been the location of housing accommodations since 1838. In 1838, the first set of accommodations were in the form of Row Houses facing Front Street called the Ontario Terrace these housed Knox College. In 1853, the building was renovated and renamed to the Swords Hotel. By the 1860's the hotel was again renamed, this time …show more content…
It is to the credit of the architects, Messrs. Ross & Macdonald, of Montreal, with whom were associated Messrs. Sproatt & Rolph, of Toronto, that they have not only succeeded in designing a modern and complete hotel for that most enterprising of Canadian corporations – the Canadian Pacific Railway – but they have also provided the city of Toronto with a monument that its citizens may well be proud of." The hotel also adds to the streetscape by providing an aesthetically pleasing pedestrian experience, by utilizing beautiful awnings and lighting. The interior of the hotel beautifully shows how to execute rhythm and contrast by use of columns; a perfect example is through the main lobby. The columns are perfectly uniform and made of white marble with beautifully decorated gold painted capitals and dark base. The main lobby features white marble columns and floors, off-white walls, with cast iron rails and a dark coffered wood ceiling, this makes the room extremely pleasing to the observer. The transitions between rooms/sections of the hotel are seamless as they are generally subtle but are certainly significant, the transitions between floors is a little more evident if climbing the stairs, however if using the elevator one would not notice the transition. Throughout the Hotel columns, arches and delicate floral decorations create an ambiance that ties all parts of the hotel together. Individual floors feature all the same characteristics mentioned above but are set apart by the use of colour; the use of the off-white walls are used on guest room floors with bold paneling occasionally
The beautiful and luxurious Hotel Vendome was constructed in the Back Bay area of Boston, Massachusetts in 1871. It was constructed on the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street. This elite hotel was accommodated by presidents and ambassadors and was unique to its time. During 1881 the hotel became even more luxurious and elite when it was expanded and remodeled. Thomas Edison even visited and electric lights were installed and inspected, making Hotel Vendome the most modernized hotel in the country. It was constructed of “brick arches, steel beams, and masonry walls with slate covering the mansard roofs to prevent flying firebrands from spreading fire from one building to another” (Mochen 2012). This solid outstanding building endured a very rough period between 1968 and 1971. This structure endured 6 fires during these 3 years, causing the Public Safety Department and licensing division of Massachusetts to pull the occupancy permits due to life safety risks. At the end of the year in 1971, however, a new owner was issued a permit to begin to transform Hotel Vendome into 124 residential apartments and a shopping mall. Later that same afternoon, the new owner opened the basement area to serve as a café while the rest of the structure began the new renovation.
And with good reason! The sheer luxury of the property is overwhelming. The mansion has 34 beautifully decorated rooms that boast 15th through 19th century art and furnishings. While blending together harmoniously, there is nothing subtle about the elaborately carved furniture, voluminous drapes, ornate carvings, and the richly colored tiles. The intent is to convey the excesses of wealth, which it does, albeit with grace and elegance.
By day it is a vision of dazzling whiteness, with its tiled court and plashing cool waters, its pointed arcades and lattice windows. At night it is equally effective with its thousands of lights and the rainbow colours of the cascade.
THE BUILDING NOW Before designing the building Lennox made a tour to cities of the U.S with buildings with the same style, now city hall's resemblance to H. H. Richardosn's Pittsburgh court house in 1886 is often pointed out. The building is designed so that the clock tower is centered on lower Bay street, providing a satisfying vista. Since this building was designed to be used for various activities when one enters the old city hall form the entrance of Queen and James street they will see three names carved above the door: Court House, Municipal Building and City Hall.
...s. All these can be interpreted from the very nature of the settings, the room with the yellow wallpaper.
First, Cancun has gorgeous hotels. The architecture of one representative hotel is fabulous. Walking into the entrance of the hotel is like walking through a breezeway because there are no doors. Upon entering, the visitor is mesmerized by the colossal tropical floral arrangement that’s so stunning and full of vibrant color that her mouth drops in awe. Soon, she realizes, after the initial shock, that she is walking on marble floors that look like mirrors reflecting rays of dancing light. Indoor waterfalls accompanied with lavish foliage engulf her; every sense is stimulated. Happily greeted and escorted to her hotel room, she is delighted to see that the hotel’s beauty continues throughout every part of it. Posh describes the room exactly. The bathroom floors, counters, and the shower walls are polished stone, native to Mexico. Surprised, she looks over the balcony to see the S-shaped pool with a floating bar and the bar’s roof covered in bamboo. Walking through the hotel lobby, through the fresh gardens, through the pathway to the pool are picture-perfect peacocks flaunting their beauty, and, indeed, they are very beautiful. Every minute detail of the Grand Hotel is designed to give her an unf...
...erfect atmosphere to convey speed, efficiency, and technology of the time. This open floor plan not only functions as an efficient visual element but also incorporates the idea of communal work. Customers, store leaders, associates, tech gurus etc. are all free to wander and work together without office walls or boundaries to separate them. The change in the use of light began during the Bauhaus era when lampshades which used to block light and create harsh separations were replaced with broad flood lights evenly spaced to create equal lighting throughout. The use of pure white walls and metal trim also make direct reference to the Bauhaus ideals. Likewise there is an egalitarian principle evoked in the designs. Built to human scale and made clearly for use by people rather than large monumental or overly scaled buildings that often promote power and authority.
But these contrived differences give rise to esthetic difficulties too. Because inherent differences—those that come from genuinely differing uses—are lacking among the buildings and their settings, the contrivances repre...
The pavilion is significant figure in the history of modern architecture, regarded to be influential with its open plan and use of exotic material. There is a blurred spatial demarcation where the interior becomes an exterior and exterior becomes the interior. The structure constantly offers new perspectives and experiences, as visitors discover and rediscover in the progress of moving throughout the in’s and out’s, a non directional conforming circulating movement pattern. To facilitate this movement, even though it is a visually simplistic plan, its complexity is derived from the strategic layout of walls with its intimation of an infinite freedom of
There is a Romanesque style in the arched windows and the brick walls. The Beaux-Arts tradition is a T-shaped floor plan. The building measures 75 feet in diameter with three wings. The Rotunda’s walls are made of Italian marble and the floors have mosaic tile. The statue in the center of the floor is called “Three Muses.”
Pops of yellow, which add pattern and texture, stand out against the background of the white walls. An oversized piece of art, which repeats the colors of the throw pillows, serves as a headboard and makes a stunning focal
The structure is built with many windows and light coloured flooring and wall paint throughout the whole airport. In my opinion, this is to create an illusion of a larger space. Since people frequent the airport regularly and there are always crowds of people at the airport, the design of the facility will tend to play with people’s moods. The light neutral colours keep people calm and relaxed in such settings. There are also clocks everywhere to allow those travelling to be aware of their travel time to catch their flight, as well as those picking up arriving travelers to keep track of the time depending on the arrival.
“When it comes to interior design styles, give yourself the permission to think outside the box. There are so many wonderful ways to define who you are by creating a magnificent living space. Allow yourself to be creative. Be stylish. And when I say outside the box, I don’t necessarily mean go crazy, I simply suggest you take some steps to create the type of home that you really want or that your client is asking you to create” (Yule 1). Looking into interior design there are many elements that contribute to the way people view the room or area, such as the color, flooring, furniture, fabrics, and accessories in every room. A mixture of endearingly vibrant colours, makes this modern, multi functional living room come to life in an instant. The colours of choice used impose a delightful air of trendy sophistication.
