In the novel, The Age of Miracles, the main conflict that arises is the slowing of the rotation of the Earth. We personally have had several questions about what could cause such a problem and how it could be resolved. We found lots of intriguing information about the research that has already been done. From a STEM standpoint, there are several different challenges that would arise if the Earth's rotation began to slow, as well as exploring what is possible regarding the rotation of the Earth. Our first question was, “What could cause the Earth to slow?” which is a science based question. We could not find a direct answer however, according to nasa, the Earth is already slowing. In one hundred years the Earth’s rotation will have slowed by two milliseconds, which is less time than it takes to blink (blinking takes 300-400 milliseconds). Because of new scientific ideas and theories, a new dawn of thinking and questioning of natural elements had evolved. During the scientific revolution during mid 1500-late 1600s, key figures such as Isaac Newton and Nicolaus Copernicus greatly impacted Europe in terms of astronomical discoveries, scientific methods, and the questioning of God to challenge the church’s teachings.

Thomas Kuhn, one of the most widely recognized contributors to the discipline of the philosophy of science, raises the argument within The Structure of Scientific Revolutions that advancement within the field of science occurs in a revolutionary manner as opposed to one more progressive or cumulative. Kuhn makes the observation that scientific research is conducted cumulatively where every piece of evidence contributes towards gradually understanding a specific scientific phenomenon (Kuhn, 96). Applying Kuhn’s argument to this revolutionary theory will provide clarity and further understanding necessary to demonstrate how this philosophical approach can be applicable towards relatively modern scientific theories such as plate tectonics.

Kuhn was able to recount the past with diagrams, and full explanations of the different theories and systems that lead up to the Copernican revolution. He also gave a full explanation of the theories that followed. This book was surprisingly enjoyable to read, and should be read by anyone interested in the evolution of science and western thought.

He says that just like a weatherman is often wrong about the weather of the week, the predictions about Earth’s future weather are a little sketchy. If weather cannot always be predicted a few days in advance, then there is no way the claims of Earth’s weather over several years can be determined true (Salmon 24).

Astronomical findings of the Scientific Revolution disproved the fact that humans were the center of everything, ultimately causing people to question theology’s role in science and sparking the idea that people were capable of reasoning for themselves.

Maybe this subject is going to be fought over for centuries while we squander the time we have left, but even if we did stop doing the things that cause global warming, it will not bring it to a standstill. Earth Hour is an annual international event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This event actually asked us to think about what else we could be doing to make a difference to save our Earth. Countries that participate will switch off their lights for one hour to display a universal commitment to protect the one thing that unites us the entire planet. Unfortunately, most of us do not notice that this campaign will bring side effects, if we as a citizen participate in this campaign in a wrong way. Hence, the campaigns of Earth Hour has innumerable uses and like all campaigns, it has its drawbacks which encompass negative impact on human activities, enhancing energy reduction as well as releasing emission to the environment and perception of people about Earth Hour.
