Chess is the type of poem that needs to be read over and over to really be understood. This poem written by Rosario castellanos tells a story between two friends that we can all in a way relate to. Rosario castellanos uses the simple game of chess to describe something greater that we have all struggled with in any type of relationship. The message, or theme of this poem is that in any relationship no matter how close or distant you are there will always be some conflict. From the beginning of the poem “Chess” Castellanos uses connotation to get her ideas and meaning across. “Because we were friends and sometimes loved each other, perhaps to add to add one more tie to the many that already bound us.” From the very beginning she describes these two characters as close friends. Then she talks of this “tie” that they are adding on to their relationship which represents the new aspect of conflict. In addition Rosario uses more metaphors, “we set up a board between us: equally divided into pieces, values, and possible moves.” She uses the very complicated game of chess to describe this very complicated relationship. “We’ve been sitting here for centuries, meditating ferociously how to deal the one last blow that will finally annihilate the other one forever.” All that building up from when they decide to add one more tie, to setting up the board it all leads to this. She describes it as meditating waiting for centuries emphasizing that this conflict will always be there, and that one last blow is something that might not ever really come about. Throughout the entire poem it is kind of hard to pick up or distinct the author's tone. But after reading over it the tone becomes obvious, it is almost like the author sounds tired, worn out and maybe even a little
