People should always look for a peaceful solution because fights not only affect the individuals involved, but also their families. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare perfectly demonstrates how a prolonged feud can devastate the loved ones of the people involved. Tybalt and Mercutio’s hatred for each other's families and the violence they forced upon Verona were the main reasons for the continuation of the families’ feud which ultimately led to Romeo and Juliet’s demise. Tybalt tries to stop the Capulet family from showing hostility towards Romeo, while Capulet refuses. Although throughout the play Tybalt shows hatred towards the Montague family, Mercutio is the character that finally pushes the feud too far. In Act 3 Tybalt peacefully approaches the Montagues. Tybalt wants to talk to Romeo, and when Romeo approaches, Tybalt kindly says, “Well peace be with you sir, here comes my man,” (III.i.53). The way Tybalt talks to Romeo’s friends shows that he is not trying to start a fight. Although Tybalt may not be trying to start a fight, Mercutio certainly is. Mercutio asks Tybalt if he’s sure he only came to talk to them, and then he tells him to “couple it with a blow” (III.i.37-38). By saying this, Mercutio shows his disgust for the Capulet family and also tries to start a fight between them. Although Tybalt is normally the aggressor, in this case, Mercutio is the main aggressor. Some may argue that although Tybalt and Mercutio elongated the feud, Romeo and Juliet still could have found a way to live happily ever after.
