Love is a very passionate and powerful emotion that can unite and conquer several generations of hate. William Shakespeare’s play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is set the 14th century in Verona, Italy. It is centred on the important conflict between two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. The play focuses moreso on the romantic relationship between the heirs of the feuding families, Romeo of the Montague house and Juliet of the Capulet House, and flow on effects of the conflict on both families. The conflict can be shown at three different key stages in the play, at the beginning, near the middle and at end. This message is shown through Juliet of the House of Capulet’s soliloquy. After seeing and falling in love with Juliet at the masquerade party, Romeo steals into the Capulet’s garden to spy on Juliet. Juliet is the balcony speaking to herself about her thoughts of Romeo, at first, unaware of Romeo’s presence. In Act two Scene two, Juliet wonders, “‘O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?’” The audience can understand what Juliet is thinking and the reason she is rhetorically questioning why Romeo has to be of the house of Montague. This shows that Juliet realises that because of the conflict between their families, it would be near impossible for Juliet to marry Romeo, which is why she wishes that Romeo was not from the house of Montague, so that they would not be enemies but lovers. Juliet also states that, “‘Be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.’” This shows the strength of love Juliet has for Romeo as Juliet is willing to give up her name and cut ties with her family to be with Romeo. It demonstrates the great love that Juliet has for Romeo as she is willing to lose everything for him, as long as Romeo loves her. The important conflict held by both the Capulets and the Montagues helps the reader to understand important message of the intensity of love and the consequences hate. In our era today, the story of Romeo and Juliet has not been forgotten. One of the ways that it lives on in our lives is through music. Halsey, an American music artist has recently released the music video for her new song, “Now or Never”. The music video is based of the Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet”. It tells the story that is parallels to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In the music video, it depicts a girl from the “bad” side in love with a boy from the “good” side. The difference from the play is that both Romeo and Juliet reveal to their closest friend that they are in love with a member of the opposing house. The big contrast between the original Shakespeare play and the Halsey music video is the surprising betrayal from Romeo’s friend that leads the unsuccessful attempted assassination of Juliet and the deaths of several members of Juliet’s house, including Juliet’s friend. However, both Romeo and Juliet live in this music video version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in comparison with the suicidal deaths of both Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare’s version.
