“Don’t waste your love on someone who doesn’t value it.” In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare exposes the life of two young lovers in the Renaissance period fighting for something they cannot live without; each other. Although fate takes its toll, the everlasting feud between two families, conditional love by parents, and the irresponsibility’s of father and mother like figure are the main causes in the death of Romeo and Juliet. The idea of love is something that is valued in this play from many different aspects of characters, lines, and scenes. Shakespeare leaves the minds of readers soaring over not why it happened, but who was at fault. “ A pair of two star crossed lovers take their life.” This quote is made in prologue 7 and spoiled what will happen to the reader, but the reason why or who is at fault is never spoken of. Juliet Capulet, daughter of Lady Capulet and Lord Capulet is a thirteen year old girl who is obedient and wants to do the best on behalf of the family. Throughout the play the reader is given many instances were Juliet’s parents feel obligated to love her. At first they threatened to throw her out onto the streets as in Act three Scene 5 Capulet says to Juliet “Thursday is near lay hand on heart and you be mine, Ill give you to my friend, and you to be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets.”. The nurse, friar, the Montagues, and the Capulets are all symbols of why unconditional love and responsibilities are important in any relationship. Although Shakespeare made many truths standout in this tragic love story, he left many questions of why Romeo and Juliet were so in love that they took their lives. But sometimes it is not the sword that kills you, it is because of those who you have obeyed your whole life, and then realizing they hurt
