Rolled Film

In this short essay I will be describing the people and events that lead to what some consider, the most important inventions in photographic and film history.
George Eastman's company had developed a roll-able, non breakable, lightweight film, that could be used in roll holders. These holders would have fitted to the back of the camera where they would replace plates in the photographic process. In his vigilance to always be on the lookout for any patents that he could use for the betterment of his company, Kodak. He found that in,1881, a patent for a the first holder for flexible film was granted to, David Houston of Cambria, Wisconsin. In reality David hadn't invented anything, it was his older brother Peter who had actually invented the film holder. In reality David had only patented the various components of a complete film roll camera that Peter had constructed.
George Eastman licensed this patent from the Houston Brothers and used it in the first box camera from Kodak, which debuted in
1888. In 1889 he bought it outright for $5000. After Peter's death, his estate moved all his remaining patents to KODAK.
The KODAK camera was introduced in 1888. It was the camera to become widely adopted by the public. It's box like design became the archetype for all cameras despite many different manufacturers. The use of roll film instead of glass plates, meant that these cameras were light and portable and could be used without the need for heavy wooden tripods to hold them steady. Before the Kodak was made available to the public, all photographers were responsible for either developing their own prints or finding some other professional to print their photographs. With the Kodak all the photog...

Which delivered a much crisper image yet still had the draw of being highly flammable and deteriorate quickly if not kept at a low temperature.
Between 1889 and 1892 a team working for Thomas Edison and headed by, William Kennedy Laurie Dickenson, developed the Kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope had a motor and shutter mechanism that ran a loop of film past an electric light source. The viewer would then look through a small window to see the moving image.
It was originally described, as a concept by Edison, himself.
These three inventions are what I and most people consider the most important innovations in the history of the the photographic process since this process was actually invented.
