Robotics will greatly impact the future of the human race. With advances in technology everyday, robotics will be taking huge steps forward. Robotics will soon be effecting how we our health, how every day tasks will be treated, but will the advancement in robotics some day cause our downfall.
With advancements in programming and nano-circuitry, are already effecting our health. With robotic surgeons, robotic prosthetics and robotic organs, and now even robotic medicine casuals, the field of medicine has been mechanized.
Normally a surgery would require hours of time, large incisions, months of recovery and have the risk of human. But there is a new surgeon taking the world by storm. Robotic surgeries have become more and more prevalent in the last decade. There are 2 general types of surgery woundless surgery and minimal invasive surgery.
Woundless surgery isn’t really woundless, but it does require much smaller incisions. Depending on the system used there can be between two or three incisions (Michael 103-111). One is for a remote control camera. The others for controllable medical tools, usually small hand or claw like tool and small scissors. In this type of surgery the camera and tools can be controlled either by human hands or robotically. Robotic controls are preferred because the human controls can prove difficult for human hands and takes endless practice. With the robotic controls the doctor can sit at a monitor and control with a few buttons and a joystick. In both cases the doctor sees what the tools are doing from a monitor that is fed images from the camera. Woundless surgery is preferable to conventional surgery in a few ways. But if AI every really does become a reality will it help or harm humanity. Advancements in technology in surgery is leading to unmanned operations which is causing a lot of controversy between many people. Even though it saves time and labor, it’s not worth the risk yet because things such as the CT scan that has been around since the 1970’s, are still causing problems such as dangerous levels of radiation. The first surgery that was assisted by robots was in 1983 when “Arthrobot” assisted in orthopedic surgeries. It became FDA approved in August 2008 (Robotics in General Surgery 5). The new that thing that is receiving a lot of attention now is the Da Vinci Surgical System. Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
The field of medical robotics is a relatively new area. The first known documented utilization of robotics in the medical field occurred in the year 1985. A robot aided in placing a needle in the correct position for a biopsy of a patient's brain. Although there is still much to explore and discover in the area of medical robotics, the advances steadily increase at a fast pace. Historically, robots have often been first introduced to automate or ameliorate discrete processes, such as painting a car or placing test probes on electronic circuits, but their greatest economic influence has often come indirectly as essential enablers of computer-integration of entire production or accommodation processes.
Therefore, it is important for the reader to understand that compared to previous methods, robotic surgery is indeed an enhancement to society. Research has shown that with robotic surgeries, bleeding has been significantly decreased. This is due to the smaller incisions that are needed for the procedure, but it is also due to the fact that the movements that are being controlled by the surgeon have the added feature of tremor control in the device. “Robbie” by Isaac Asimov is a short story that takes place in 1998. When this story was written in 1965, the futuristic elements were extremely profound and one could see how the reader might agree with Asimov’s interpretation of the future. His world is detailed, including news events about manned Mars missions, futuristic technology, a technological code of ethics, or the ‘Three Laws of Robotics,’ and convincing personal relationships. However, Asimov got it backwards. Many elements in his world are still science fiction today and while robots do exist in 2010, Asimov’s robots are far more advanced in some areas and far more deficient in others. Although Asimov’s world contained many convincing elements, it was ultimately flawed and suggests that mankind’s predictions of the future are not always accurate.
Nowadays, technology is a dominant feature in the lives of people around the world. Most daily life activities involve the use of technology which is expanding every day through scientific innovations. However, such innovations do not always occur in every part of the world, but mostly in technologically developed countries, such as South Korea, the USA and Japan. How can scientists and researchers behind artificial intelligence accurately come up with how the human mind interacts with itself and its surroundings? Yes, they can start with the ability to learn, such as a path of an infant absorbing knowledge through its adolescence, but what if the expansion of information becomes exponential? The artificial intelligence may gain full control and depth of their mind and comprehend the world differently as humans do. This brings the artificial intelligence to a cognitive and spiritual level beyond that of the human mind. If this were to happen humans cannot be able to understand the artificial intelligence. They have programmed it to learn itself, its mind, and how to operate. What level is that beyond a human mind, a god? Robots always had a special place in mankind’s heart. There has always been an aura of mystery and discovery surrounding them. What is a robot?
