Advancements in technology in surgery is leading to unmanned operations which is causing a lot of controversy between many people. Even though it saves time and labor, it’s not worth the risk yet because things such as the CT scan that has been around since the 1970’s, are still causing problems such as dangerous levels of radiation. The first surgery that was assisted by robots was in 1983 when “Arthrobot” assisted in orthopedic surgeries. It became FDA approved in August 2008 (Robotics in General Surgery 5). The new that thing that is receiving a lot of attention now is the Da Vinci Surgical System. There is even a lawsuit stating that the Da Vinci System had design flaws. 56.8% of surgeons who have used the da Vinci system claimed that they had experienced malfunctions with the system (“da Vinci Robotic Surgery”). The robot has surgical arms that are uninsulated which let electrical currents move from the arm of the robot to a woman’s artery while in the middle of a procedure. This caused burns to her artery and intestines and resulted in her dying two weeks after the incident. The CT scan has been around for over 40 years and we are still having trouble with it, for example, the amounts of radiation it gives off is a lot and very dangerous and results in injuries often. If there are still 15,000 deaths occurring each year from a piece of technology that has been around for almost 45 years, then we should not be throwing patients into procedures done by robots. In 2013, a whole 13 years after the Da Vinci system was created, a study was conducted on incidents that had happened while using the Da Vinci System. There were 245 reported incidents to the FDA that year. Out of those 245, 174 were nonfatal injuries and there were 71 deaths (“Mishaps and deaths caused by surgical robots going underreported to FDA”). The robotic arms can make more precise movements because unlike human hands, it does not tremor or get tired which is good while performing a relatively long surgery. One may simply die of excessive bleeding even after the surgery is done, meaning that you are not only in danger when under the knife, but even when you are finished from the procedure (whether it be a success or not). Moreover, statistics prove that most people that even though a high number of people get surgery done, a higher percentage get a second one of those same surgical operations done later on due to not being satisfied with the results the first time around.
