Robotic Surgery: a Boon or Curse
Imagine a big machine with three robotic hands pointed at you on an operating table waiting for your surgery to begin. For the first time ever, it is possible for surgeons neither to look directly at nor touch the tissues or organs on which they will operate. The possibility of having robotic assistance is unbelievable, but with current advancements of technology surgery it has become a less dangerous treatment.
Surgical robotics is a relatively new technology. Robots have taken a new direction in many different areas from being used in labs, stores, constructions and many more as an extension of one’s capability. Robots previously thought as entertainment are soon transformed into useful tools in the field

The trauma to the area results in an extended stay at the hospital, expense, time, and discomfort for the patient. The use of a robotic surgery or laparoscopic surgery reduces the trauma to the area by creating a smaller incision. The benefits also include less blood loss, shorter hospital stay and less reliance on postoperative pain medication and a cosmetic benefit of no big scars. On the other hand, for surgeons and patients, the procedure can reduce the time of the …show more content…
It helps reduce the stress on the surgeon who has to operate for 3 or more hours. This is not an arm race to see which hospital has the best equitment/sytem; but, a race to ensure that all patients/suregorns are provided with the best assistants to make the process of surigiers less stressful for both. The article, “The Pros and Cons of Robotic Surgery,” Stewart Pinkerton states, “They (surgeons) don’t have to bend over an operating table- they can sit in front of a screen with magnified, full-color 3-D view of the surgical field” (2). It not only provides the surgeon proper posture, but reduces the strain on surgeons. Insurance companies pay the same for a laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery, according to the article Robotic Surgery Grows, But So Do Questions (Dance 2). The costs for both surgeons are to no cost to an insured patient, nevertheless, beneficial to have a shorter and less traumatic
I picked an article on the prosthetic limbs, which are controlled by your own thought. The unique part of this prosthetic is that It has 26 joints, is controlled by the person’s own mind and has the power to curl up to a incredible 45 pounds. Imagine being able to control a prosthetic just by thinking about the next move. The limb has been described as Modular, which gives them the power to accommodate anyone in particular that has either the hand missing to the whole entire arm. It can be also used as a surrogate arm for those who have suffered a stroke and lost movement of their own arm. This just an incredible part of science that getting develop and study by John Hopkins University.
Paying attention to detail is very important in this occupation. Your job is to reaction of the surgeon and the action around you as well. Also, a strong stomach is highly suggested because you have no idea what could be scheduled for that day, and also you are assisting by cutting someone open. Some of the thing you will see will be disturbing or even amazing. Even though working in a stressful but yet, exciting places, to have a shaky hand isn’t so great either. “You need to remain calm and focus on your duties no matter how simple or complex a procedure may be.” (Rasmussen.edu). Surgical Technicians are required to set up equipment, tools, and to prepare the room for the surgery. They work under the arms of a surgeon by passing the tools in a unique way. They can also have many names such as “OR Techs” or “OP Techs”. To become a Surgical Tech, you must have an associate degree and to complete the certification of a surgical
Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
.Robotics can completely change the medical field, surgical robots can be thought of as extra integrations in surgery which increase the quality of the operation. The goal of surgical robotics is not to supersede the sur...
According to agency of health care research and quality it is estimated that almost one third of health care spending is due to inpatient surgical procedures and it also estimates that average hospital costs has been increased from $ 9,100 in 2003 to $11,000 in 2013. [4] Some major reasons for this increase in costs includes lack of coordination, risk associated with complicated surgical procedures, poor patient engagement in decision making, quality requirements and etc. The perioperative surgical homes are very effective in solving these problems and achieve better surgical outcomes as it is a coordinated care which is led by multi specialty physicians who provides continuum of care to patients from the time of decision to 30 days after discharge of the patient i.e., it is incorporated in to include all three phases of surgery; perioperative, intra-operative and postoperative
“Individuals are encouraged, even expected to make ‘lifestyle’ choices to maximize their life chance and simultaneously held responsible for managing and minimizing the risk associated with these decisions” (Leve, 2012:124). Media discourse is part of everyone’s day to day life, ideals of bodies are shown in all these media communication’s in order to appeal to the consumer. This could be considered to have made society become obsessed by looks, meaning that individuals feel the pressures to keep up with how people are represented in the media, for example recognized celebrities in magazines. According to The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or BAAPS, there was a 16.5 percent increase of procedures in 2012. These statistics show that cosmetic surgery is becoming normalized, “This is how we live now. Anything that makes us feel better about our appearance, whether it involves needles, knives or acid, is acceptable’ (Wiseman, 2012)

Surgical technologist have a fulfilling and adventurous job, being a technical assistant to the surgeon’s, with a number of tasks ahead of them, and problems that will go on, with an outcoming salary that will make a good living in life.
Therefore, it is important for the reader to understand that compared to previous methods, robotic surgery is indeed an enhancement to society. Research has shown that with robotic surgeries, bleeding has been significantly decreased. This is due to the smaller incisions that are needed for the procedure, but it is also due to the fact that the movements that are being controlled by the surgeon have the added feature of tremor control in the device. This feature actually compensates for the natural hand tremors of the surgeon and makes for steadier movements during surgery. (Lanfranco, Castellanos, Desai, & Meyers,
I chose the Da Vinci Surgical system as my topic because I am interested into going to physical therapy or into the orthopedics field after undergrad. Surgical equipment is highly important due to the hundreds of accidents that happen and also the high percentage of diseases. As these incidents occur it is important to consider the safety of the patient when it comes to cutting into their bodies. With the invention of the Da Vinci Surgical system it helped with vision and different viewpoints of the patient’s body and also improves precision. It is important to have a machine or tool for more than one type of surgery, one to use on patients with different injuries or diseases. Overall, this surgical system helps improve and help further research how precise and how in control a surgeon can be.
...y within a medical setting has stepped away from the shadows and into a brighter future with the development of the da Vinci Surgical System in the medical world. Before the surgical robot, doctors or surgeons would have had to make several incisions to their patient’s body, which would cause the patients recovery to be elongated and possibly painful. The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons to make smaller, less visible incisions to the patient’s body and have a better precision during the procedure. Throughout several years, surgeons relied on their typical laparoscopic surgery to be able to provide patients with the procedures that required them to make large incisions through the patient’s abdomen. Nowadays, surgeons and their patients can have a sigh of relief because the surgical robot provides surgeons with the precision that they long strived for.
Biomechanical engineering is driven by needs similar to those of biomedical engineering. There is always a constant need to improve medical equipment while keeping it cost efficient. These are the two main needs for all biomedical engineers. Biomechanical engineering is specifically dedicated to applying the scientific of knowledge mechanical systems and engineering to biology and the human body. One of the many needs that drives this biomedical subfield is society’s need for more advanced equipment and machinery. Some recent advances show this need. In the last decade, biomechanical engineers have invented and innovated new robots and machines that can assist a surgeon in surgery or serve as an artificial liver. These machines satisfy the need to improve and innovate new equipment that can save lives and improve how people in the medical field perform their
Haptics can be found in wide range of devices. In the extreme with respect to precision, surgical simulators use haptics to provide realistic forces that emulate the feel of a real medical procedure. In the extreme with respect to the magnitude of t...
...d decision-making capabilities robots have to offer, they can be used for complicated surgical procedures in the very near future. Precision handling and perfection in surgical tool alignment are vital for surgeries that occur at the micro scale (like neuro surgery).
There is a small amount, but they are easy to bypass to make time for other personal matters. Irregular and overtime hours can interfere with a general surgeon’s family time, but the whole point in being a surgeon is to help others, that are in worse conditions than the surgeons themselves, back into their normal lives and into a state of well-being. Some weekends will be spent at the hospital for surgeons, that is because a patient 's weekend can easily become their last weekend without going under life saving procedures, so surgeons must use their time wisely in this career (OK College). The guilt of knowing that a patient’s life ended because their surgery was postponed due to wanting to spend time doing recreational activities would be unbearable. Death can be preventable if a surgeon is proficient in what they do. According to The Telegraph, “Female surgeons collectively come across as determined, focused, extremely well organised and - in some cases - formidable.” Women surgeons are more looked for over men due to these traits that are mostly carried by women (The Telegraph). I find this very inspiring because it shows the power that women have in the modern world today. This may empower girls into finding a better option for a life long career instead of having to be a stay at home mom or doing something that makes minimum
