It seems like you can't drive more than two miles today ithout encountering road rage. Some say that road rage is a national epidemic more dangerous than drunk driving. Others find it to be a perpetual but insignificant problem. Needless to say, almost everyone agrees that road rage is an actual attitude that can be observed on most American roadways.
But what is road rage? Is it some kind of medical condition? A certain habit or behavior? Or maybe it's an actual traffic accident?
Road rage has a short but interesting history. The term "road rage" first appeared in England in 1988 and gained popularity rapidly. Mentioned only about two dozen times in 1994, there was an extensive increase when the term was mentioned 400 times the following year. In 1996 the term appeared 1,600 times and has been steadily growing since then. The public has grasped the term and considers it to be one of the foremost national driving concerns.
In a recent AAA poll 44% of motorists ranked road rage as the biggest threat on the road while drunk driving ranked second with 31%. Road rage is now an everyday household term heard on the evening news and read in newspapers daily (Bowles, Scott, and Paul Overberg).
So what is this new-sprung expression that has received so much attention in recent years? Numerous people have tried to define the term and add some clarity to it's meaning. Some have tried to determine it's psychological significance and apply it to certain people. ...
Dave Barry’s “Road Warrior” is a humorous essay that discusses different types of “rages” that exists on a daily basis in American life. Barry begins by discussing road rage then goes into parking lot rage, and shopping cart rage. He explains that these rages are unnecessary, and how they just create violence in the world today. While Barry was writing this article he was living in Miami, Florida discussing the problems of road rage in the city. If anyone has ever felt road rage, or any kind of rage this is for you.
The first point I chose for the article is the four types of rage people have. The four types of rage, is Road rage or ‘’Mad driver disease”, Sky rage, Sideline rage, Line rage. In this essay I will explain just one of them and that is Road rage. Dianne Hales wrote in the article that American Automobile Association’s Foundation for Traffic Safety says that road rage or what they call “Mad diver disease” is getting more and more examples, as in the 1990’s the percentage increase 7 percent each year in that decade. Dianne Hales did not explain road rage in detail, so I wrote out the definition of it. This rage is a hostile or crazy action by a driver of a car or truck or other automobile on the road. This is when the driver does oral malign, intentionally driving dangerously and making warnings to hurt other drivers. Road rage can lead to assaults, and collisions that can guide to trauma to other divers and even death to those drivers. I agree with Dianne Hales that this case of rage is getting more common in drivers as I see it happen more often lately. The essay Road Warrior, written by Dave Berry expresses the road rages that everyone, or most people, face on a daily basis as well as a few other rages. He justifies how unnecessary these can be sometimes, and how they just lead to bad things (e.g. violence). The title is quite fitted for what the essay is about, additionally making you want to read the essay, as the title pulls you in.

Dangers on roadways is an issue that describes the discrepancy between perception and reality of road rage. The media, for some odd reason, tends to make road rage a huge controversial issue. As seen on talk shows from Oprah Winfrey to CNN, they reveal to people that road rage could happen at any time and to always be looking over your shoulder. These talk shows and news programs also put fear into our minds by explaining that most roadragers often use guns to kill or injure their victims. Glassner contradicts the media's speculations by stating that out of approximately 250,000 people killed on roadways between 1990-1997, AAA attributed that one in one thousand was an act of road rage (pg.5).
Star Tribune mentions that according to the Department of Public Safety, "distracted driving causes on in four Minnesota car crashes and results in at least 70 deaths and 305 serious injuries a year." This statistic appeals to logos by explaining how distracted driving is a serious matter. The statistic conveys an informative tone. Star Tribune incorporates the statistic to build their ethos. The statistic makes car accidents seem more realistic to their audience. This causes the audience to get alarmed about car accidents as well. Then, Star Tribune writes that the U.S. Department of Transportation reports, "Nationally, highway deaths spiked to 35,092 in 2015, the highest one-year increase since 1966." Star Tribune includes this statistic to explain how deadly car crashes are. This establishes a fretful tone. The statistic appeals to the audience's logical reasoning about how car accidents need to stop. The statistic also builds Star Tribune's ethos by quoting the U.S Department of Transportation: A trusted source. Star Tribune also adds that the U.S. Department of Transportation blamed the 7.2 percent of deaths per miles traveled on drunken driving, speeding, distracted driving from a phone or other hand held device. The data concluded "that about 10 percent of fatal crashes in 2015 involved at least one distracted driver." The statistic means that for every 3,509 car accident death, at least one death was from
The article “Culturally Sensitive Treatment of Anger in African American Women: A Single Case Study” by Antonio Gonzalez-Prendes and Shirley A. Thomas, focused on the treatment of anger within African American women based off of culturally gained attitudes and beliefs. During the post-emancipation era, also known as the period of “redemption” for southern whites, was a time of great racial violence and hate from most white individuals, typically farm and plantation owners, towards the newly freed slaves emancipated after the civil war, which of whom were predominantly black. Right before the civil war, society was separated into two racial hierarchies: white, and black. If an individual was of any color other than white they were labeled as a slave and considered someone’s, referring to white slave owners, property. After the civil war America’s social lifestyle and overall government changed dramatically due to the emancipation of slaves in the south. When African Americans were emancipated the idea and concept that was once accepted, any individual other than white is considered to be insubordinate and a slave, was now abolished and considered inhumane. This caused a major disruption within society because former slave owners lost huge amounts of manpower that use to work and generate profit by making enslaved individuals farm their land. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as "the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property"—a traffic and not a criminal offense like road rage. Examples include speeding or driving too fast for conditions, improper lane changing, tailgating and improper passing. Approximately 6,800,000 crashes occur in the United States each year; a substantial number are estimated to be caused by aggressive driving. 1997 statistics compiled by NHTSA and the American Automobile Association show that almost 13,000 people have been injured or killed since 1990 in crashes caused by aggressive driving. According to a NHTSA survey, more than 60 percent of drivers consider unsafe driving by others, including speeding, a major personal threat to themselves and their families. About 30 percent of respondents said they felt their safety was threatened in the last month, while 67 percent felt this threat during the last year. Weaving, tailgating, distracted drivers, and unsafe lane changes were some of the unsafe behaviors identified. Aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive or drive unbelted. Aggressive driving can easily escalate into an incident of road rage. Motorists in all 50 states have killed or injured other motorists for seemingly trivial reasons. Motorists should keep their cool in traffic, be patient and courteous to other drivers, and correct unsafe driving habits that are likely to endanger, antagonize or provoke other motorists. More than half of those surveyed by NHTSA admitted to driving aggressively on occasion. Only 14 percent felt it was "extremely dangerous" to drive 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. 62 percent of those who frequently drive in an unsafe and illegal manner said police for traffic reasons had not stopped them in the past year. The majority of those in the NHTSA survey (52 percent) said it was "very important" to do something about speeding. As mentioned above, two thirds of the fifty eight thousand highway deaths last year, 2004 were related to aggressive driving. In a recent survey by roadrage.com reported that six out of ten people reported that they were followed by a driver displeased with their driving. Another survey reported that out of those six people, four reported a chase of more than ten miles and out of the four, three reported being followed to their house. A questionnaire posted by roadragers.com surveyed 600,000 thousand people and out of those 600,000 thousand 216,000 people reported that they know someone who was killed or injured by an aggressive driver.
Life on the road pertains to two kinds of people, those who can’t isolate themselves from others and those who are able to isolate themselves. However, those who travel constantly and travel because of work, are suited for this kind of lifestyle. They are able to mobilize and adapt easier than those who are not in favor of traveling or constantly hitting the road.
The main form of reckless driving that a large amount of people are aware of is drinking and driving. When an individual is under the influence while driving, it can become detrimental in regards to other lives, not just to the individual behind the wheel because it impairs the driver 's ability to make quick and smart decisions. Within the last year there was a 15 year old boy who had lost his life due to driving under the influence. Somehow the boy had managed to veer off the road and wrap his car around a pole and into a Whataburger, not only taking his own life but also risking the lives of anyone who was inside the restaurant. The fact that he was drinking impaired his ability to drive, thus resulting in not having control of his vehicle. Another major issue of reckless driving is speeding. Many times drivers will reach dangerous speeds on the road as the result of racing. Once reaching the high speeds, the individual is risking the amount of control they have over the car.
