Islam is the second largest religion in the world that exists today. The Islamic religion is growing at a very rapid rate, so there is a higher possibility that Muslims will be in our everyday lives more so. Most people that do not follow the Islamic faith think that Muslims are strange, frightening, and are usually linked to all terrorist events. This state of mind that we have about the Islamic religion needs to change (Esposito 3). With Islam growing in popularity over the world, we need to make ourselves more aware about the religion by learning about their faith, beliefs, practices, customs, culture, history, core beliefs that unite all Muslims, and so on, so that we are not ignorant to the growing religion and we can educate ourselves …show more content…

Muslims are monotheists, they believe in one God. Muslims believe in prophets. They not only believe in the Prophet Muhammad, but they also believe in the prophets of the Hebrew Bible. People that follow the Islam religion also believe in angels, heaven, hell, and the Day of Judgement. Muslims believe that Muhammad received the complete revelation from God through the angel Gabriel. The revelation was given to correct the human error that was in the scriptures and belief systems of the Judaism and Christianity religions (Esposito 5). Muslims believe that the Islam religion is not a new religion with a new scripture. Muslims believe that the Islamic religion is the oldest monotheistic religion because it is the original revelation of the God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (Esposito 6). The Islam religion originated in the Middle East (Esposito 7). During the sixth century, Mecca was where the Prophet Muhammad preached the message of the Quran. This message that he preached formed the basis of this religion. The messaged was calling everyone to come back and worship the one true God (Esposito 8). Muslims believe that they are members of a worldwide Muslim community. This community is known as the ummah. Muslim women must wear veils and long garments to be modest (Esposito 106). Not all Muslim men wear turbans or caps. If a Muslim man is wearing a turban, the turbans color will indicate the status of the man (Esposito 109). Muslim men will also wear beards to honor the Prophet Muhammad (Esposito 109). The practice of Muslim arranged marriage is changing. They are slowly starting to lean away from arranged marriages (Esposito 111). Muslims view marriage as a contract. If a divorce is necessary, there have been special circumstances that have applied (Esposito 116). Alcohol and pork is forbidden in the Islamic religion.
